Gameday Open Thread: Phoenix Suns vs. Miami Heat

Phoenix Suns
vs.

Miami Heat
16-5 5-15
7:00 PM Mountain / 9:00 PM Eastern
TV: My45 HD, NBATV High Def

In the first of only four home games in December, the Suns will take on the Miami Heat tonight at the US Airways Center. When the Suns played the Heat in early November, Dwyane Wade wasn't in the lineup. He'll be there this time, fresh off a 35 point, 10 assist performance against the Clippers. That may be the only thing fresh about the Heat, though. This will the last of a six-game road trip, in which they will have played all six games in the span of nine days. In other words, they face an even nastier scheduling situation than the Suns had on Saturday. The Suns are 6-1 against the Heat in the Steve Nash era, sweeping them each of the past two seasons and winning in Miami last month.

I have to work late tonight and will have to watch the game after the fact on DVR. SueB has graciously offered to fill in for the live blogging, so check back here during the game for her commentary. In the meantime, here's a YouTube in need of some updating. Steve Nash vs. Dwyane Wade, probably put together by a Heat fan. Some nice plays from both players, but it only shows Nash from his Dallas days because "he would win automatically" otherwise. (A bit of mild profanity in the music, by the way, so mute the volume if you want to avoid that).

Live blogging
If you don't have anybody on tap to live blog, I should be able do it tonight, TexSun. Just got to get the kids in bed, all nice and tucked, by 9.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 11:12 AM MST reply actions

Go for it!
Live blogging isn't a requirement here, it's just something I like to do because (a) it's fun (when the internet is behaving at least), and (b) we have a lot of people on this site who live outside of Phoenix and not all of them have League Pass. Unfortunately, I can't make it today, so if you want to give it a try, go for it!

by TexSUN on Dec 10, 2007 2:37 PM MST up reply actions

Yes, it's fun
And last time I did it, the Suns ran the Kings off the court, so I'm hoping for a similar performance tonight (I know, I know ... events on the court have nothing to do with the blogger!).

I updated the post...
...to note that you'll be filling the live blogging duties tonight. Thanks a bunch!!

Dwyane Wade
You know... I don't think he's been in the Heat line up while playing the Suns in a long time.

by whatisboxhappening on Dec 10, 2007 11:48 AM MST reply actions

You're right
I was thinking he played in one of the two games last season, but didn't have time to look it up. Turns out, he missed them both. So this will be the first time we've seen DWade since January 26, 2006. This was during the Amareless season, and pre-Tim Thomas. We still beat them, and on the road at that: ESPN details here.

Nash vs Wade
It was difficult for me to watch this clip as i like to reject the thought that Nash ever played for Dallas.

by brian13 on Dec 10, 2007 12:13 PM MST reply actions

Good test
D-Wade, assuming he is in fact healthy and back to himself, will be a good test for how the Suns D handles a strong slashing guard of the Manu variety.

We saw what Monta Ellis did to the Suns and it wasn't pretty but I think the Suns did a good job stopping the penetration and made him take the pull up J. Of course, he was hot and made those shots in the 4th Qtr and if a guy like him - Parker, AI, TJ Ford - is making their mid-range shots and not getting to the rim and the line then that's really all you can ask for.

I think Bell is a good match up for us and just like Marion "X'd" out T-Mac and R Lewis, Bell now that he's back on form should be able to have the same result.

I think that the Heat's only chance is if Shaq and go Delorean and turn into Shaq v2002 and drop 30 and 10. Not likely.

Coming off the non-game humiliation in Minny and w/ the match-ups (and no White Chocolate in the line up) this game has blow out potential all over it.

Glad I sold my tix :)

Oops my bad

One hour to go
I see TexSun didn't post any projected lineups, so I'll go for it. For Phoenix, hmm, I'll go out on a limb here and predict Nash, Bell, Hill, Marion and Stoudemire. For the Heat, their starting five last night was Quinn, Wade, Haslem, Wright, and O'Neal. I notice that the Heat only went 8 deep last night, and two of the subs (Mourning and Cook) totalled 24 minutes combined. So let's hope to see some tired Heat legs tonight.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 6:02 PM MST reply actions

Missing lineups
LOL. I was hoping no one would notice. Saturday, it was because I checked three different prior Minnesota games and found three different lineups, and couldn't find the game notes on their web site either, so I gave up. Today I just got lazy because I was in a hurry. Thanks for picking up the slack, SueB!

by TexSUN on Dec 10, 2007 6:21 PM MST up reply actions

Not a problem
I'm just antzy for the game to start. For all my complaining about how hard it was to watch the early games live, now I'm spoiled by it.

NBA TV is on the air
I'm expecting the FSN AZ announcer crew since it's actually not on My45 tonight.

I wish to thank my very understanding husband for taking over with the slow-moving kids, so I could get here right on time. ;)

Lineups as posted
I knew somebody was missing. Jason Williams is out hurt.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:14 PM MST reply actions

Good shooting start for both teams.
Matrix with 2 3-pointers off the bat, and a long 2 for Raja. But the Heat keeping up. 8-8

There's grant hill slashing to the bucket. 10-8.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:16 PM MST reply actions

Two more good plays for Hill
An assist for an Amare slam, and another slashing bucket. 14-12.

Another Heat bucket missed during a replay. 14-14. Amare fouled on the way in. 1-for-2.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:18 PM MST reply actions

Classic length-of-the-court play!
Nash to Marion. But still can't open up any space. 17-16. Heat ball.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:19 PM MST reply actions

Steve turns it over
But complains about a foul and a charging call against him just before. Suns have to call a timeout with the score 22-17 Heat.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:21 PM MST reply actions

Diaw and LB in
Steve misses a 3, but Diaw fouled on the rebound. No luck on the possession, and DWade hits another. 24-17.

LB misses a 3 badly.

Lineup is Nash, LB, Boris, Matrix, and Bell.

Mourning hooks by Boris with ease. 26-17.

LB comes back with a 3. 26-20. Breaking a 12-0 streak by the Heat.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:26 PM MST reply actions

Wade on fire
Everything going in, even a long bank shot. "Lucky shot", says Thunder Dan. Mourning misses a chippy, and fouls Boris on the rebound.

TV timeout.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:28 PM MST reply actions

Wade hasn't missed a shot yet
so says Dan Majerle. 6-for-6 and 12 points.

Drawn-up play after the timeout gets Amare a jumper from the circle. Swish. 28-22.

Foul called on Amare reaching in against a driving Wade. First for Amare. Wade hits them both. 30-22.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:31 PM MST reply actions

Beautiful pass from LB to Hill
But again, the Suns can't stop the Heat and it's 34-24.

Raja Bell with a 3.

<1 minute left in the quarter. Amare cannot handle Shaq without help. Backing him in and slamming it.

Great passing play by the Heat leads to a dunk.

Suns will get the last shot of the quarter.

Well, no because LB turns it over, and the Heat get a fast break slam by Wade to make the score 40-29 after one.

Horror show from Saturday continuing ...

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:34 PM MST reply actions

Hill again
Going to the bucket to make it 40-31.

Suns lineup is LB, Hill, Marion, Diaw, and Amare.

Marion (?) I think hits a 3, and Amare a jumper around a Heat bucket, and the lead is down to 42-36. Amare fouls Mourning.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:39 PM MST reply actions

Davis heating up for the Heat
Two straight long shots, and it's 46-36. Heat shooting 76%. And another one. 48-36, and LB clanks one.

Yuck.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:40 PM MST reply actions

50-36, and another Suns timeout
Heat beating the Suns at their own game. But surely they'll cool off. Right?

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:41 PM MST reply actions

This isn't as fun
As the first game I blogged for. Maybe it'll turn around.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:42 PM MST reply actions

Amare gets an inside bucket
But Shaq comes back and muscles/walks his way in for an easy lineup.

But Amare hits the fall away, and one.

52-41.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:44 PM MST reply actions

Suns scrapping
Getting some offensive rebounds. But still taking too much effort to get it in the bucket.

Nash gets his first point on a 3-second illegal defense. Boris hits a shot from the foul line. Lead down to 8.

Exchange of buckets with Shaq tapping in a rebound and Hill laying it in off a break.

54-46, halfway through the quarter.

But the Heat answers again, and Nash throws it away. 56-46 Heat at the TV timeout. 5:30 left.

Oh, ha
NOW some other people show up. I guess I can't quit after all. ;)

Here's Skinner, at last.

Lineup is Bell, Nash, Hill, Amare, and Skinner.

This guy Davis can't miss either.

Nice drive across the line from Amare. Lead still 10.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:51 PM MST reply actions

Heat finally miss a jumper
And Raja answers with a 3 to cut the lead to 7.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:51 PM MST reply actions

A defensive stop and a Bell three.
Let's see some more of that. Heat can't keep hitting 70% all game.

Looks like.....
the Suns are starting to get that mojo going.  Hopefully they'll keep it going.

Big slam for Shawn
On the fast break.

But Suns still down 7. 60-53.

Suns shooting 56%. That's not soo bad. But nothing like the Heat.

Timeout Heat, I guess.

Guess my lineup was wrong above. Must've been Shawn that was in there and not Hill.

by SueB on Dec 10, 2007 7:54 PM MST reply actions

I haven't been watching for long
But the pace of this game could work in the Suns' favor. This is nuts that their defense looks truly porous, but odds are they'll keep hitting and the Heat will cool off. I don't see them scoring 120 points and losing. This is Suns tempo.

by Vt13 on Dec 10, 2007 7:55 PM MST reply actions

Skinner and Shawn double-team Shaq
And get a block. But Nash misses a layup. And Shaq is called for a travel!! Alert the media!
Thunder Dan says it's a bad call.

Skinner with a good offensive board, and after a couple near turnovers, gets rewarded with a jumper.

Lead down to 5. 60-55. Wade blocked by Skinner. Bell fouled!!

Skinner!!!!!!!!!

Great energy!
Skinner block! Oh yeah!

by Vt13 on Dec 10, 2007 7:58 PM MST reply actions

But Miami gets a 3.

Skinner again with a shot and one!

Skinner pick and roll. And one!? Nope.

by Vt13 on Dec 10, 2007 7:59 PM MST reply actions

Raja on the drive
This is MUCH more like it.

65-63.

But Quinn answers again. 67-63. Last shot for the Suns.

Skinner got his hands on a miss by Bell but couldn't quite tip it.

34-27 quarter for the suns.

Wow!
Crazy end of half. Closer now. Lots of goods things happening now. Too bad there's a momentum-stopping break. But the Suns have turned something around here, I think.

Good way to close out the half.
All the Suns need to do now is jump out and crush the Heat like bugs when the 3rd beggins.

Amare from the top of the key
He's 7-of-9 for 16 points. But Wade creates and Quinn finishes with a 3.

Nash misses badly. Still no FGs for Steve. And another miss.

LB, Hill, Bell, Boris, and Skinner

Immediate bucket by Miami
And it's an 11 point lead.

LB gets the bounce, and a steal, and an assist to Matrix. And it's back down to 7. Go, Suns!

Bell, Hill, Amare, Matrix, and LB on the court.

Good defense
Steal by Amare.

Steve misses a floater he usually makes. Rattles down in and comes out. But another stop. And LB misses badly again.

Cold shooting for both those guys is killing us.

Steve goes the other route and draws a foul. But it's a non-shooting foul.

At least they made it interesting
Tough to lose two in a row to teams with losing records, and it doesn't bode well for the tough matches coming up, but at least they didn't fold after that terrible first quarter. Nash and LB need to get their shooting touch back and someone needs to pull in a few rebounds.

Fuck i hate those damned heartbreak endings!!!
It's the Suns own damn fault for losing this game though.  The Heat should have been blown out tonight but instead our O sputters out and dies even with the D getting stops.  Dammit this team has got to start playing like the championship squad they want to be.
