Site News Has Moved
I found out one of the ads in the left sidebar wasn't where it was supposed to be. It was supposed to be directly under the logo where the Site News block was. Since moving it was going to make the Site News block more difficult to spot, I decided to finally get off my lazy duff and figure out how to implement what I originally wanted to do anyway. Introducing the new section menu at the top just under the "Commentary and Discussions..." title. This menu will replace the Site News box, which had really grown beyond just site-specific news anyway. If anyone doesn't like the location/color/size/whatever, feel free to let me know in the comments. There's also a highlighted topbar I could enable for it, similar to what Golden State of Mind has. I love it on their site, but I wasn't wild about it when I tried it on ours. But I can always put it back and leave it for a day if anyone wants a look. (Perhaps I'm just too used to seeing our site without it; someone else might have a different opinion).

You're right GSOM is great, but...
As for having more people post on the front page, I agree, that is a great idea, and one that we can implement immediately with help from the readers. It all starts with the Diaries. I probably haven't been as good about promoting Diaries to the front page lately as I should have been. Mostly it was about timing, but there were definitely a few I should have found a way to squeeze in anyway. I'll try to be better about that in the future. In the meantime, just remember that writing a well-thought-out diary that's reasonably friendly to readers of all ages is the best way to land your words on the front page.
As for the photos and webpins, I'm not sure about these yet. GSOM is so large that they probably have the clout to acquire those things legally, but I unfortunately, do not. I have looked into adding some photos, but so far, haven't found out the right way to do it that's not a violation of somebody's copyright. Yeah, I know, you're probably thinking "lighten up and get over it!". Unfortunately, I have copyrighted photos of my own on the web, and I don't appreciate it when people steal them without asking, so I don't want to do that to somebody else. If I ever find out the "right" way to get photos legally and in a way that's affordable, I will do it.

not sure on this
putting up images w/o approval. You could ask Dan, I bet he could get an answer for you on this (if you haven't asked him already).
