Time to Vote Sports Fans
I've resisted the urge (mostly) to use this soap box to weigh in on politics.
Lord knows there's plenty of cowards and blowhards in sports to talk about.
But really I just can't resist throwing this poll out there. I am dying to know what you think.
So sports fans, who's it going to be.

Ed note: I did try and find a less flattering picture of Obama but I guess the media loves him too much while McCain clearly is less photogenic. Don't let that sway your vote.
[Note by Phoenix Stan, 10/18/08 6:38 PM PDT ]
I have to say that I had a long internal debate before posting this poll. There seems to be a strong unwritten rule about the separation of sport and politics and I half expected some serious backlash.
What's odd is that the separation only goes one way.
From presidents throwing out the first pitch, to vice-presidential candidates dropping the puck to lots of political pundits talking freely about their sporting opinions, crossing the fence in this direction is common.
What you don't see, even from the unruly and fully unregulated sports blogosphere, is sporting media talking about politics. I am not really sure why that is but I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Other then from Charles Barkley, why don't we see more political-sportical cross talk?

I am trying to be diplomatic here... but...
…as a potential ambassador for Blazer’s Edge, it needs to be stated that your choice of photos is a little bit one-sided. It’s not so much that the Obama pics are so grand… it’s just that it looks to me from the photo on the left that Obama is thinking: “Mc..Cain… tell me how my (Bleep) tastes”.
Don’t you just love it when politics and sports collide? Good stuff Phoenix Stan… good stuff.
" Are you ready for the season?'
Really. REALLY? He's going to ask that? Doesn't he know who Jerryd is? Doesn't he realize Jerryd was born ready?"

note:
Before anybody says anything… let it be known that I had absolutely no intention to make a political statement when I put this image together last night… I just figured that since this is a Suns’ fan site and because the photo lends itself perfectly to a Shaq-rap reference… it was kind of a no-brainer.
I am a native Arizonan and have a lot of respect for John McCain.

Great caption!

I am Canadian and can't vote in your election.
Yes I am Canadian and can’t vote in your election. It’s ok. We had our federal election recently with the lowest voter turnout in some time. Everybody I have talked to likes Obama, but I respect McCain too. I’m a bit electioned out. Our civic elections are next month, and provincials are next year.

What's a provincial?
Is that a wine of some kind?

I know what a Civic is
I drive a Honda.
"You're really making me feel good about myself, little man," says Oden as he starts dancing after scoring a goal. "You better come harder than that."
Good civic quote.
Good car quote about Honda civic. And civic in my previous posts are city elections, such as voting for Mayor.

Provincial answer.
The answer to your question on what’s a provincial. I live in British Columbia a Canadian province. Provincial is pertaining to the province. Be equivalent to the state elections within a US state, and the provincial election is for Premier ( Canadian equivalent to a state Governor ).

David Zirnin
This guy, David Zirnin who writes for slam magazine had some great commentary about sports and politics when that josh howard footage was buzzing around the internet a few months back…
Zirin is a good writer.
Dave Zirin does have some great commentary. I but SLAM all the time, and his articles are definite eye openers. I wrote to SLAM about one he did on the Sonics move to OKC.

on next president
If these are the best 2 people we could get, then the U.S. is in trouble…oh wait…we are in trouble…recession, etc.
It really bothers me after watching a debate, then reading some fact checker and seeing both sides were wrong about many of their comments!! Then Obama and McCain repeat their mistakes in the next debate.
Some things that bother me to no end, that this country uses oil when we could’ve pushed for alternative fuels decades ago. It’s very clear that Bush and McCain are sleeping with the big oil companies so to speak, I don’t hear Obama doing anything different though. Both candidates say we need to research and develop alternative fuels, then that’s all they say.
That Obama has 280 million behind him to run ads, etc and McCain has 85 million. That McCain lists his donors online and Obama doesn’t. We’ll likely never know, but I wonder how much of that 280 million is coming from outside of the U.S.??
That we’re in a war that likely has as much, or more to do with Oil than terrorism.
That abortion is coming up again as a subject in this election….I strongly don’t believe in abortion, but I don’t think it should be against the law…I’m not the type to go around and push my beliefs on anyone, I just search for and follow my own.
That the media is so clearly pushing for Obama.
That Obama has so little experience
That so many are upset about Palin being the republican v.p. choice, I like her.
That Biden is such a hypocrite, he was McCain’s biggest supporter and wanted desperately to be the v.p. running mate with him. now he trashes McCain……what a joke
I don’t care what side your on, but to flip flop like that, that’s messed up.
That both Obama and McCain blame the greed on wallstreet and the mortgage companies for the real estate problems, when in all honesty, it’s also as much the fault of stupid people buying homes they have close to no chance of being able to afford within a year unless the home value goes wildly up. Guess the public doesn’t want to hear that,
That both are clearly reading rehearsed material, and with the exception of Palin, you feel like you don’t know the candidate as well as the person or group of people writing the speeches…
There are answers for many problems, it’s just the U.S. isn’t a leader anymore in using them,
On the flip side…there’s still a million wonderful things about living in the U.S. like the term for a president is only 4 years…ok sorry :-)
I'd like hear MCain's views on the PHX Suns before I vote.
I think that will tell me if he’s legit or not. I can tell any man by their analysis of the Suns.

politics and sports
The reason you don’t see more “political-sportical cross talk” is that sports fans are overwhelmingly unintelligent when it comes to the real world. I see it whenever sports boards try to venture out of the teenage boy world of sports fanaticism. What would you expect from a buch of folks whose greatest passion is’my team’s better than yours’ and ’how’d your fantasy team do?’ o ’I’ve collected the whole topps set, I’m better than you’.
All you have to do is look at how the poll results are running, You have two rather unimpressive candidates. One looks great on TV. What are the dumb sports jocks going to go for? You might as well poll a Hollywood set. Let’s face it. This outlet of ours is pure fantasy.
I could post my views on the importance of this election being the most important of my 49 years on this earth. I could argue debate effectively with anyone about the real reasons for the economic troubles. I could point out the stark and real differences between the candidates, and the foolishness of the media presentation to the American people. but why should I? I have an audience that spends huge amounts of time on something that doesn’t really matter, an audience that knows more about movies and seasons and post defense and point guard play tha about human nature, real life, and geopolitical undercurrents.
No big deal. I’m not griping. If the Suns finally win that elusive championship the same year that the US slips into European style socialism with its economic stagnation and moral neutrality, what’s the big deal? At least I get to wear my Suns championship T shirt whilst reminiscing on the demise of the American dream with all of its distinctiveness. Oh. Excuse me. I’ll have to wrap up my rant. I just heard the Islamic call to prayer. I just can’t get used to that five times a day.
You asked.

sorry it took me so long to respond, I’m excited about this year for the suns, but not crazy excited, just hopeful excited. Still, let’s hope this coach is smarter than the last and knows when to pull out players instead of letting players run the team…as d’antoni often did…plus, it’ll be nice to see our coach have some class on the sidelines instead of blowing up and looking like an ass….that d’antoni often did. I think d’antoni’s blowup attitude only hurt amare’s responses to the refs, where as porter can really help amare mature and approach things better….I’m hoping.
We really miss the athleticism of marion, shaq was some fun but he simply killed us during the spurs series by missing 32 of 64 free throws…if that was me, I’d acknowledge I was a big part of the reason the suns lost, and I’d retire already. Think of who else we could’ve gotten instead….what a lost chance….
I do like dragic, and lopez, and tucker has improved.
There is little question though, I miss the fast paced basketball,

Why do you assume
that we wouldn’t understand political arguments? Maybe it’s because you don’t really know how to explain what your candidate’s issues. You should think before you insult everyone who reads this blog. Get over yourself. Oh, and Obama isn’t Muslim. Do your research.
For my part
I, for one, cannot wait to welcome our new socialist overlord. Although, if only there were some way that we could give “the Decider” another four years…
