KG the Punk?
It’s all over the internets, news and blogs. A video of Kevin Garnett taunting José Calderón and trash talking his mouth off while Calderon brings the ball down the court. Here is the video.
Now, Trash talking is the oldest trick in basketball, you see it in pick up games, semi-professional basketball and obviously the NBA. It takes your opponent out of rhythm, you get into his head, you make him mad and make him focus on his anger rather than the game. But it could also back fire. There are players that respond well to it, they channel their anger and play tougher basketball, they get in your face and make you pay for mocking them.
It’s no secret that Kevin’s intensity helps his team, they feed from it. He plays every game like its his last one and I respect that but the dude is nuts.
Garnett's “defense” on that play was bush-league and embarrassing to watch. The amazing thing is that he didn’t get a Technical. It seems like everybody (refs) is buying his nice guy image. Bottom line is that Kevin is a guy who will do anything to win, even if it involves trash talking to a guy half his size.
Sure, we don’t know what Calderon did to piss Garnett off. As far as I’m concerned Garnett is not Chinese, but I guess we’ll never know.
Last year Kevin got a taste of his own medicine when Amaré didn’t back off and got in his face, making him look helpless on the defensive end. He ended up sitting in the bench with foul trouble most of the game. The Suns won that evening.
Super-star treatment is one thing, but this just got out of hand.

Ridiculous
I was shocked by this from KG. Way over the line. The fact that the ref didn’t call almost seems to be more about his disbelief.
I wonder if the league can review this play and issue a tech post facto. I am guessing not.
Shameful display by a great player.

Reminds of when Raja would defend with his hands behind his back
He wasn’t taunting the other player, he was taunting the ref!

Surprising
I’ve always loved Garnett’s intensity but that was a bit over the line. I love that Calderon gave it right back to him.
It's Ba-Nash. It's a no brainer.
