On Jared Dudley
Hey Suns fans, I spend most of my time over on CelticsBlog, and I just wanted to give you the scoop on Jared Dudley. I live near Boston, and I'm a huge Boston College fan. Although I haven't seen much of Dudley in a Bobcats uniform, I've probably seen about 60-70 of his games at BC. Here's all you need to know.
His coach at Boston College was Al Skinner. Skinner played his college ball at UMass alongside Julius Erving, and is highly respected for what he did in his playing days, as well as the work he's doing now for BC. The one knock on Skinner, possibly the reason why he hasn't jumped to a higher profile program after years of success at Boston College, is that the offense he runs defines a college-style offense. In other words, the offense that Dudley played in for 4 years at BC is unlike anything he will play in or play against at the pro level. In fact, the tight flex offense that Skinner employs is the exact opposite of the run and gun Phoenix Suns attitude (although I understand that that has changed a bit this year). Skinner's version of the flex fit Dudley's playing style perfectly, as the entire offense is meant to be run inside of the 3-point line. It is not pretty to watch, but it's extremely effective if executed properly. Now, onto Dudley's scouting report, which should help explain why he's a good fit for such an offense.
- Excellent court vision. Capable of making seemingly impossible passes that most other players aren't capable of making.
- Great at creating space down on the block. Made a living in college scoring easy buckets simply because he was able to seal off his defender.
- Has a high-arcing shot. Solid free throw shooter. In college, showed the ability to get hot from deep. I'm not sure about how his shot has progressed since he's entered the NBA, or whether he can shoot an NBA three, but I'm sure like most tweeners he's worked on his shot extensively and it's getting more consistent every game.
- Yep, he's a tweener. See Ryan Gomes or Craig Smith (also a former BC Eagle) for recent tweener success stories. Dudley doesn't have great speed, and isn't a great athlete. If he were a bit taller, he'd play the 4 position. It's questionable whether he has the quickness to guard opposing 3s. His ball-handling is passable for a wing player's.
- Good rebounder in college. Not sure if he can be a consistent force on the boards in the NBA against superior athletes.
- Very smart, reliable player. You can count on him not to blow the game for you.
- It never came easy for Dudley. He signed with BC only at the last minute - no other premier D1 college teams offered Dudley a scholarship. I'm pretty sure his next best option was San Diego State.
- Dudley is fiery. He was BC's emotional leader along with Sean Marshall. Without the passion for the game that he has, he definitely wouldn't be in the NBA today.
I have nothing but great things to say about Jared Dudley the person. Sure, he's not the model NBA player physically, but up to this point he has succeeded despite doubts about his athleticism. There is no question that he has a good head on his shoulders, that he will work hard, and that he'll be ready to play when called upon. Hopefully, he'll find a home for himself in Phoenix.

Hey there
C’s fan here as well, and I followed Dudley’s career in BC, and also his short time with the Bobcats. While I really don’t have much to add beyond from what has being said, I love that guy. He’s the best bad basketball player I’ve ever seen, and that’s pretty much all I can say.
I’m surprised seeing a bit of the reactions around here, I thought it was a very good trade for the Phoenix Suns, and my God are the Bobcats ever dumb. You really, really have to look for a bad angle to see this as a bad trade for Phoenix. I wanted the Suns to face the C’s in the NBA Finals last year*, mainly because I have a big man crush on Steve Nash, guy’s amazing. This year, it might be closer.
*Yeah, not every Celtics fan wanted the Lakers. I hate those assholes, and I wish Kobe THE RAPIST Bryant would leave the fucking NBA to play in some small european country. Not because he’s good, and he is, but because he’s an ass and I agree with everything Curt said about this Lakers.
Mother---- him and John Wayne!
Thanks for the info.
I’m interested to get a closer look at Dudley myself. I’ve only seen him in a couple games with the Bobcats, and he certainly wasn’t my focus at the time. I do like some of the potential things he can bring to the table though.
Is he better then Barnes?
He seems to be exactly the same size with a lot of similar traits except Barnes has far more experience.
What’s the comparison between the two?

Barnes is a rental. Hill is too.
We need to develop somebody at that spot for the longer term.
Window Closed? Shit, just break it then.
I guess our "core" after 2010(assuming Amare bolts) is
Dragic
Barbosa/Tucker
Dudley
Amundson
Lopez
Fun times?
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Exactly.
They won’t fit our offensive defensive offensive defensive offensive defensive offensive defensive offensive approach by then.
With
our 2010 1st round pick ( unprotected ) goes to the OKC Thunder, thanks Sarver and Kerr.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
would anyone be surprised
if sarver sold the top pick of the 2010 draft for 20 million dollars? i know i wouldnt.
I'm by no means an expert on Matt Barnes
But I think they are similar players, both tweener types, with Barnes possesing more athletic ability.
Dudley may play a bit more like a conventional power forward. Dudley’s got the brains, too.
There’s definitely a difference in playing style, but Dudley is 6’7’’, 225, and Barnes is 6’7’’ 226. Wow!
I appreciate
your unconditional love for Jared Dudley. He was drafted in the second round I believe, and came off the bench for the Bobcats.
So he is the second coming of who? He is what he is, role player.
I am sure he will work hard, so that will be great.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
He was a late first round pick
He’s a role player, but your team is likely to have more role players than otherwise, so I don’t see it as a bad thing.

I never said he was anything more than a role player
However, you’re right about the unconditional love. :-)
Longing for Coach D
Wasn’t it easier to consider trade ramifications when we all just knew the new guy wouldn’t get any PT?
Mmmmm ... Guinness
WTF?
Depth? Remember that. Oh that’s right. You liked D’Antoni’s notations

I'm okay with it being a different 8 each game, depending on matchups. =)
I feel Admundsun is a decent replacement for Diaw and that we still are overloaded on the wings.
Everything must go.
does kerr remember
that he was a role player? it seems we have high volume scorers and no role players
Well
that wasn’t true until this most recent trade. Bell and Diaw are role players. Were.
