Porter lays into team and self

To recap: In one busy day, Porter called his team off the court, proving who's in charge. Then he admitted the potential error of his offensive design and showed a willingness to change. It was nice to see a coach hold everyone accountable.

Interesting turn of events. Apparently, I have more patience and faith in what Porter was trying to do than Porter did.

Good sign..

I like that Porter has tried to establish himself as authority and I also like that he’s willing to change the offense and put more of it in Nash’s hands. Now lets hope that the talk about the offense is more than just talk.

Wow, they are flailing.

I knew there was serious trouble when the solution no longer involved better defensive training, x’s and o’s and devolved into a discussion of soft forces like “energy”.

True, energy may be the missing ingredient, but then why change the coach?

My fear is that the x’s and o’s are actually not that good and not working. This is Wade and Harris are just killing us. The lack of energy is the result of trying to make a bad system work, a system that isn’t necessarily bad in theory but one not custom-designed for our unique personnel.

All-in-all I respect this admission:

Then the coach said the strangest thing. After returning from the locker room alone, Porter told the media that Nash might soon take a greater hand in this offense by controlling the ball more frequently. Nash could then create plays, shots and spacing. Effectively, it means the offense no longer starts in the post.

“It’s a lot easier to control turnovers from one guy than from 12 guys,” Porter said.

This is awesome, not only because it further reaffirms what genius Mike D’Antoni was, and I believe to be, but it also shows our coach is man enough to admit when he’s wrong and move on to what works. Porter’s results-focused intensity and lack of stubbornness may be his greatest assets.

Window Closed? Shit, just break it then.

Good times are here again

Amare gonna like this, since he aint a post player and needs the Nash feed.

Nash is gonna like this because he knows what to do. He may even feed shaq a bit more out of appreciation.

Bell gonna like this because he pretty much Nashie’s bitch.

When Nash off the court, that’s the good time to feed the post!

Great news, no doubt it cometh after great crisis.

Sigh

It would be great news but then I read that Nash has flu-like symptoms and probably won’t play tonight.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

It's a start.

Hopefully everyone holds themselves to the same level of accountability that Porter has.

i like porter, even though i miss the 7 seconds or less style

I’m anxious to watch him for a year or two and see, I think he’s as straight forward and honest a coach as we could get, we’ll see

by be-the-ball on Dec 3, 2008 3:26 PM MST   0 recs

on style though

i don’t think it’s a style problem as much as the way this current team is built, 1/2 for small ball, 1/2 for sit and watch shaq

Which half as which

I am still confused by this “we are not built for the half court” thing. Seriously. I don’t understand from a personnel standpoint.

LB? Sure – he’s fast but he can also shoot and break down guys in ISO in the half court (if the floor is spaced).

Who else isn’t built for this style?

by Phoenix Stan on Dec 3, 2008 3:30 PM MST to parent up   0 recs

ok

in thinking about it, your right, we are built for half court ball. I was just saying that our team is mixed up…it’s very, very clear Nash does better with fast break offense, and bell misses it also.

by be-the-ball on Dec 3, 2008 3:45 PM MST to parent up   0 recs

Out of the top 8 players I think...

Better Run n Gun Players – Nash, Bell, Barbosa, Barnes
Better Half Court Players – Shaq
Either/Or – Amare, Hill, Diaw

So out of the top 8, I think only Shaq is better suited for the half court. That’s not to say that the other 7 can’t play well in a half court set, I just think that our team as a whole (excluding Shaq) our team is built to play uptempo.

by brian13 on Dec 3, 2008 4:19 PM MST to parent up   0 recs

I don't know

Let’s see what makes a Run n Gun player.

Speed of course. Ball handling. Fast break passing and decision making. Shooting.

Half court:

Rebounding, jump shooting. Post play. Perimeter passing. Post entry passing. Mid-range shooting. ISO penetration.

Shaq is obvious but Bell? He can’t finish or pass on the break. Barnes – did you see him turn the ball over on a 3 on 1 break? Sure he can finish but he can also shoot in the half court. Barbosa is better playing fast but he’s not a great finisher or passer and he is a good shooter and can penetrate in the half court.

Diaw isn’t a great run n gun. Hill goes both ways. Nash and Amare should be fine either way.

I think the guys are missing it b/c it was fun and they are certainly not used to playing in the slow down game. But I think its all more about experience and coaching the basics then about skills.

Conditioning

That’s an important one

I don’t agree that you need all those skills to be a Run n Gun player.

Sure, you need speed. But not every player needs to be a great ball handler. Thats why you have a PG to lead the break and Nash is undoubtedly the best at it.

And not every player needs to be the best finisher at the rim. Barnes can shoot and finish. Bell doesn’t need to finish at the rim. His job is to run the floor and spot up at the 3pt line to finish from there.

It all depends on which position you play.

by brian13 on Dec 3, 2008 5:32 PM MST to parent up   0 recs

I think it isn’t as much physical as it is mental. Thus, “built” meaning “mentally equipped” for change.

Then again, I really do not understand what is going on. Did Sarver really engineer “crafts” day to point out that his players were being babies? That’s weird. I also read from either Bickley or Coro that the Suns “were beginning to shop Stoudemire.” WTF?

I’m sure it’s been stated, but I’ve never seen the PHX media get so whipped up into a frenzy. Makes me not want to even read an article from these guys.

You know...

I shudder to think what this would all be like if we were 7-11 right now instead.

by Azreous on Dec 3, 2008 3:48 PM MST   1 recs

11-7

You are right AZ but think about it, most of our wins have been “kind of ugly” and they look uncomfortable even when they win! I guess upper management thinks it’s not a good sign. I agree that the bonding and craft thing was kind of lame…but I’ll take it if it helps them wake the f*ck up.

It’ll be interesting to see the “new” system having Nash creating…they will have no excuses this time…

1st Q against

the Nets. Nash had the ball the entire time. He was back to driving baseline and dishing and looking for his shot more.

It certainly looked better but I don’t think its sustainable. I don’t think this move. I would like to see them try a bit longer to run the offense less dependent on Steve so we can save him for the 4th qtrs.
