The Wit & Wisdom of Charles Barkley

Anyone hear about Sir Chuck's hilarious quote regarding the Shaq for Matrix & Marcus trade?

Star-divide

For those who didn't, I give you this...

"He has to play well for Phoenix to get past San Antonio, Utah and the Lakers. He can't just be there. As you get older, it doesn't work. That's why they came up with Viagra."

- Charles Barkley, TNT analyst and Suns Ring of Honor member, on Phoenix's acquisition of Shaquille O'Neal

Effin hilarious!!!  And one more reason Sir Charles will always be "da Man" in my book!!!

Too bad he couldn't bring our Suns an NBA Championship...

Barkley the court jester
I don't get it.  What does Viagra have to do with playing basketball?

I never liked Chuck, anyway.  He says we will never win because we don't play any defense.  I never saw him play any.  And can you believe he has the nerve to call Shaq fat?

He's the Deion Sanders of basketball.

Put a cork in it, Charles.

Barkley guarded bigger forwards well in his prime
He knew how to use positioning and leverage very well during the apex of his career.  The smarts to continually get inside position had a lot to do with his ability to amass double-digit rebounds in most every game.

For his height, Sir Charles played very smart while maintaining the bruising, physical style of play that he brought with him each time he got on the court.

Charles Barkley more than backed up his words, and most of the time, he's right.  He's honest and doesn't give a rat's ass what the common view amongst the mainstream media is.  That's one of the things I like about the guy.

You do make an outstanding point about him having the nerve to call Shaq fat when he earned nicknames like "The Round Mound of Rebound" and "Boy Gorge."

I've always disliked barkley,
he's rude, its a tossup between him and walton for "turn the channel or mute it" reaction.

obviously then..
you have no sense of humor, or atleast appreciation for their sense of humor. Walton and Barkley are two old dumb guys who were great players, and even better on TV, because of their off the wall personalities. Walton, I can understand being a lil cuckoo, but you love the Chuckster. He is by far the most entertaining sports analyst. And him, Kenny, and Ernie are the best show on TV, period!

oops...
meant to say "but you gotta love the Chuckster"

I love Charles
I love his insight and willingness to say what he thinks instead of just spouting the party line like a Tom Chambers.

I also think that Charles tends to be right more often then not. He was the one 3 years ago that said that Amare needed to get better on D and rebounding and he was right.

He said that the Suns couldn't win the ring without getting bigger and according just about everyone here except me and the Suns organization he was right about that too.

He also said on the radio today that its one thing for your mind to want to play hard but there's a point where your aging body just can't do it. Coming from Charles that means a lot more then coming from say...me.

Phoenix - where bitter happens

not trying to start an argument..
but I'm pretty sure all of us knew amare's defense needed to improve greatly. Also, charles wasn't around with this new and improved training staff (the track record of miracles) is only recent, barkley is ancient. Plus, anyone who spits at a person in the audience and ends up hitting someone innocent, that guy is a piece of trash. Your welcome to like him, and I won't continue with my points, but its pretty clear that Barkley is a jerk, was a a great player, yes, should have we won a championship with him on the suns, very very close, mj is the way.. For all the negatives I've said above on Barkley, the way he rebounded, etc, that's the type of player we so desperately need, plus you rarely if ever heard barkley complain, (If I recall correctly), which is all I ever hear Marion do. I couldn't stop laughing, at the miami press conference with marion and the heat, and there he was complaining again about not being recognized. 4 all star appearances, 17 million a year, seriously, marion made barkley look good. It's a tricky thing, because, yes, Marion did some things non of our players can or could, but, it's pretty clear just from listening to marion talk, that he cares more about what people think of him than being a good teammate. The big thing we should be looking at instead of any blogs or articles, the suns players, they all look happier with this move...jury is out on whether it will work, but I'm glad they took the chance.. sorry srp, I simply disagree with you on barkley, i do like that barkley says what he wants, I just think there's a way to do it with more class, much more....think of magic johnson..

I hear ya
Charles certainly had his moments and I get that.

I am just saying that these days I look forward to watching him on TNT or listening to him on the radio like today when he was on Jim Rome. For whatever reason, his crap doesn't bother me.

Phoenix - where bitter happens

what the mediots failed to tell everyone...
... regarding the spitting incident, was that a heckler started talking about his wife at the time and that's what made him spit at the guy.  Unfortunately, it landed on a little girl.  He went on to find out the address of the family and he apologized to the girl, said it wasn't right, and apologized to the family.  He also gave the little girl roses.

But reporting that wouldn't have elicited as much readership as making the national public mad at Chuck.

rebound34
I knew some of this, especially the heckler part, and he did something back, but, in my view, for a player making as much money as he was and is, he should've given $40,000 for a college scholarship or something, something big, roses, thats small, not impressed, sorry...that's just words..on the flip side, barkley could probably be the leading act for the blue man group or gallagher

And on barkley as a player, nothing to argue about, he was awesome, if you think of potential and will, I think barkley has a tremendous drive, plus, he fulfilled 110% of his potential, not something you can say for most nba players, at least not to the barkley extreme, if we had someone like barkley now instead of marion or diaw, OMG

I forget, on the top 50 nba players of all time, Barley was on that list if I recall, ...yep...

as classy as...
Magic may be, he is just horrible on TV. He provides no insight, and just is full of his old Laker success stories, and stating the obvious, like "Kobe really took over in the 2nd half, especially the 3rd and 4th quarters."

Charles is Worth the Price of Admission
And I'm getting TNTHD to watch the games anyway, so I consider him free.

Like Cotton used to say, "Sometimes you just have to let Charles be Charles."

Last year, he ate crow for all of the Golden State fans and we all appreciated watching that.  He's entertaining and does add basketball insight.  He also will often say, "It's just my opinion" which, translated, means, "I know a thing or two about basketball.  I may not always be right, but I'm right more often than I'm wrong.  If I'm wrong, prove me wrong, but if you're just going to whine get out of my face."

There's just not enough airtime and too many PC types to allow him to say that.

I saw his quote.  It was hilarious.  He's right.  We're all wondering whether Shaq needs som Basketball Viagra.
