Game Day Open Thread: Phoenix Suns at Golden State Warriors

Phoenix Suns
at

Golden State Warriors
36-15 31-20
7:00 PM Mountain / 9:00 PM Eastern
TV: FSN AZ HD, ESPN
Probable starters:
Steve Nash PG Baron Davis
Raja Bell SG Monta Ellis
Grant Hill SF Stephen Jackson
Boris Diaw PF Matt Barnes
Amare Stoudemire C Chris Webber

When is the #1 team in the West an underdog to the #8 team in the West? When the #1 team is short-handed, and the #8 team is a matchup problem even on a good day. The last time the Suns beat the Warriors, Mike Dunleavy was still in Oakland and Stephen Jackson was still in Indiana. Since the trade that sent Jackson and Al Harrington out West last season, the Warriors have beaten the Suns fairly convincingly in two meetings. And that was with Shawn Marion's defense on the team.

It doesn't sound like Shaq will play tonight, which might be for the best anyway under the circumstances. Keys for the game? Solid play by Boris and Amare. Especially Amare. Versus Chris Webber, that's one matchup we should own.

Live blogging is back by popular demand. As usual, it will be in the comments of this post starting at tipoff. In the meantime, check out Golden State of Mind for a view from the Warriors fan side. Also, check out the Q&A that srp and I did with those guys. (Yes, I've been in something of a pessimistic mood lately. I'll come around. Eventually.)

[Update 02/13/08 18:26 MT]: It's official. Shaq sits this one out and tomorrow also, according to the Arizona Republic. We'll have to wait until after the All-Star break to see what the big guy can do. Bummer.

Feed the beast!

I just can't see how having Webber helps them.  It is good for us, because Biedrins is a tough rebounder.

Warriors
Jackson bailed them out against Washington on Monday with 41.  Webber didn't help a lick.

Diaw is the key agin tonight.  If he produces, we win.  He must play good defense on Jackson.

Note from after the game
Diaw played OK, but nothing special.  and we lose by 2.

I think DJ is the key to a win tonight.  If DJ can play solid defense on both Jackson, Baron, and Ellis(ok so that could be hard for a rookie who probably won't be getting more than several minutes)and keep his offense flowing, we could make an honest stand.  Nash should only play 20-25 minutes. I don't want to see him worn down and embarassed by getting posted up on every single play.  Or the subsequent double team to help Nash, where the ball is swung to a shooter.  In sum, the key lineup tonight should be Barbosa and DJ, playing defense on GS' tough guards.  Also, Diaw will then clearly need to step it up to carry the slack with Nash out.

Looking back
Your key to the game went 1-8 shooting.  I guess that's why we lost.

Thats nuts.
DJ is the key? Nash at 25 minutes in a big game? No way in hell any of that happens.

by MichiganSunsFan on Feb 13, 2008 1:38 PM MST reply actions

Maybe not as crazy as it sounds
I wouldn't go as far as to say DJ is the key, but I haven't forgotten that game last season where Marcus Banks, of all people, played a huge role in a second unit that darn near saved the day. DJ could provide a similar boost tonight, and if he's getting it done and Nash isn't, I say let the kid go for it. (Nash has looked to me like he could use a break anyway lately). I still say the key is Amare, though. Feed him as often as possible and let the beast do his thing. And he needs to stay out of foul trouble too, obviously.

No Shaq tonight, probably not tomorrow either
...so says Paul Coro

http://www.azcentral.com/members/Blog/PaulCoro/17115

Tomorrow's game should be...interesting. We either see a depleted Mavs team, or one trying to work in three different new players on a single day's practice if that. And if Shaq plays after all, then we have both teams trying to work in brand new major cogs. I love it.

Your thoughts
on the Shaq vs. Bill Walton "controversy?"

http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3241540&n8pe6c=1&categoryId=2459 788

removing my suns fan bias, i still have to side with shaq...walton sounds mad arrogant when saying "shaq's arrogant is an insult..."

sure, he took a portland team to a championship, but he also jumped on the celtics train to another as a sixth man while shaq actually was a very valuable piece of the miami team and also took 3 of his own teams to championships...no comparison between shaq and walton in my opinion

oh, and luke walton might wanna sit out the pheonix lakers game if shaq plays...im not sure how shaq will respond to seeing walton on the back of a jersey...he might fall on luke and end his career or something

by RealTangiblesGuy on Feb 13, 2008 6:58 PM MST reply actions

also like how
espn only shows "highlights" of shaq falling or missing shots...i think they may be showing a little bias towards their employee...

Game on
Well, I really didn't mean to be late with this but last minute e-mail exchange held me up.

Anyway, the Warriors lead by three a couple of minutes into the game. This one's going to be hard to keep up with. I'll do my best.

Q1 8:21 - Speaking of non-existent
As the announcers were talking about Golden State's sometimes "non-existent" defense, the Suns open a wide path to the basket for the Warriors who now lead by two.

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 7:18 PM MST reply actions

Kidd to Mavs?
Apparently Devean George is exercising his right to block the trade. This could get interesting...

by SmittyLite on Feb 13, 2008 7:19 PM MST reply actions

In other news...
The Mavs are motivated. Up by 13 on the Blazers. Maybe this was the plan all along--threaten a trade they know likely won't go through, just to get guys fired up?

Bizarro ball
In their first four possessions the Suns pound it down low with Diaw on Baron and then go to Amare in the post.

While the Dub's and running on everything with two down field passes and some very quick shots.

The biggest matchup problem for us is Amare guarding Al Harrington (what's up w/ that dude lined skull?). Amare struggles to cover him out at the arc and of course Nash can't stay with Ellis at all.

Q1 6:33 - Suns back on top
After Amare lays it in. And before I even get that typed, Hill gets the fast-break layup off the steal. Suns up 24-20.

Q1 4:52 - Bad time for Raja's shot
...to be MIA. Warriors pull within one on the three-point play on the other end.

Attack!
The Suns have missed their last three shots because they took shots - Pound it down low, they can't guard Amare or Diaw...

Q1 3:45 - Ack!
Baron Davis (I think) with the three, and the Suns get a turnover on the full-court pass that Skinner couldn't get a handle on. Tied up at 26.

Messy end to the quarter
Raja gets called for a foul on the "blockout" (per ESPN announcer), and D'Antoni gets called for the tech. ESPN announcers are arguing over whether it was a good call or a good blockout. LOL.

38-32 Quarter
Now this is how the NBA is supposed to be played...

by SmittyLite on Feb 13, 2008 7:39 PM MST reply actions

After one
Warriors up six after one. The broadcast showed Raja leaving the game. Is he pulling a Marion? (Thinking it's half-time)?

Anyway, not a lot of defense by either team so far, but better offense by the Warriors who are shooting 59% and have four extra attempts to boot. Suns are at 56%. Baron Davis is looking like he may be headed for one of those nights where anything he throws up goes in. Hey, Miami: Can we borrow the Matrix back for a night?

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 7:42 PM MST reply actions

Q2 11:42 - Nice try, rook
DJ tried to take the charge, ref not buying it. Ends up leaving the Warriors open for an easy one.

Boris gets it back on the other end.

Q2 10:49 - Nice try II
Goes for the steal, but no luck. Keep trying, rookie. You'll get it.

Barnes held onto Amare for dear life, Amare is not happy. Hill makes peace.

Two made free throws put the Suns within two. Most importantly, Amare's mad. 40-42, Warriors.

Q2 6:45 - Well, at least we got some rebounds
Suns padding their offensive rebounding stats with about half a dozen tip-in attempts, none of which work. Meanwhile, Amare gets called for his third foul. Time for Boris to step up. 48-50, Warriors after the free throws.

Q2 2:58 - Spoke too soon
Suns with the stop and Hill with the jumper puts the Suns up 54-52.

...Shooting foul by Raja Bell on the other end, though, means it may be short-lived. And for extra fun, it's Raja's third.

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 8:05 PM MST reply actions

Q2 2:23 - Fouls go both ways
Monta Ellis goes to the bench with his third. LB at the line for two, Suns up two after the split.

Scoring
Has really gone down this quarter. I think that's good for the Suns...

by SmittyLite on Feb 13, 2008 8:13 PM MST reply actions

At the half
Nice run by the Warriors to open up a four-point lead in the final minute. They're shooting is "down" to 51%, but the Suns' is down to 45%. Of course, that stat is a bit tainted by that tip-in debacle earlier. Monta Ellis is unstoppable so far, 10-14 for 20. So far, he's winning the battle with LB who is 3-5 for 9. Amare leads the way for the Suns with 13, even having to sit out most of the second quarter with foul trouble. Suns need to figure out a way to blow open a lead here. I don't think this is a team you want to be in a nailbiter with at the end (as the final minutes of the half showed).

by SmittyLite on Feb 13, 2008 8:36 PM MST reply actions

Q3 10:27 - Closing that gap
Warrior's lead chopped in half with the technical FT by Nash and the split pair by Diaw, and most importantly, the stop on the other end.

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 8:37 PM MST reply actions

Q3 9:24 - Blogger's jinx
OK, I knew it as soon as I hit 'post'. Baron Davis with the three.

Three-point play by Grant Hill, and three-point make by Nash gives the Suns the one-point lead. 67-66.

Q3 7:09 - Go Grant Hill! II
Another three-point play. Saves me from writing a hateful comment about the Suns leaving Monta Ellis open on the other end.

Q3 3:17 - If at first you don't succeed...
LB misses the three, but Nash tracks down the loose ball, and LB cans the second attempt. Warriors get it back on the other end, though, and the game stays tied at 79.

Amare's tip-in gets waved off, but nice steal by Hill that set it up.

...and now, the replay shows Al Harrington put it in. Looks we're going to get it after all. LOL.

83-79, Suns.

...until Jackson hits a three. Geez, just can't get any separation from these guys.

by TexSUN on Feb 13, 2008 8:57 PM MST reply actions

Q3 -00:55 - OK, how does that happen?
Suns give up TWO offensive rebounds on that play. Because they were out-sized? No. Out-hustled? Maybe. Warriors were lucky? Definitely.

win or lose, that was a great game, and it concerns me that this might be the last true Warriors-Suns run run run game ever. Let's hope Webber and Shaq don't change the teams too much.

Oh, by the way TexSUN, that "dagger three" you thought Baron Davis hit to put the Warriors up 117-113 was actually hit by Kelenna Azubuike, the future stud.

dam man!!
ELLIS, wow, he was fantastic, announcers sure called this correctly, what a fun game to watch, as far as shaq goes, can I reply back in a few weeks? Because I hear you loud and clear on your statement, but, I haven't seen Amare play like that since the playoffs, and Hill, I was much more concerned about losing our best defender in marion, but I'm feeling really good about our team now.

And as for you guys, many of the games you play (g.s.), it's pretty clear that your team can beat anyone in the league, very impressive game by g.s.

fun team to watch!

not me
This was a great game for us, it matters little that we lost, this is one loss, to lose like this, I feel fine. We fought our  way back in and almost won it even after a couple of really questionable calls. On the ref getting in the way, hard to find a rule on the web on this, everything comes up about the gambling scandal.

I take away 3 very important things from this game

  1. Amare is awesome, even with the missed freethrow, he was awesome, he was doing many things I never see him do, did you see some of the screens he was setting, awesome
  2. G.Hill is awesome....
  3. Even though we lost, this is the type of play I expect and love from our suns....this gets me very excited, simply awesome.....one thing about g.s. that our players really need to be thinking about more if we meet them in the playoffs, they're faster than f..., seriously, they are masters at stealing the ball, etc.

I thought it was questionable
but one of the posters on the Warriors blog says the ref is part of the floor. Tough break, but that's the rule.

Damned ref
If he's part of the floor, we should have stepped on the fool.
