All-Star Weekend Open Thread

Since we have some Suns players involved in the All-Star festivities this weekend, I thought it might be a good idea to create an open discussion thread. Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire will take part in both the All-Star Saturday Night events as well as the game itself on Sunday. Nash will go up against his good friend Dirk Nowitzki (last-minute replacement for Kobe Bryant), Daniel Gibson, Richard Hamilton, Peja Stojakovic, and last year's winner Jason Kapono in the three-point shooting contest. Amare will join Cappie Pondexter and Eddie Johnson in the Shooting Stars event. Both Nash and Amare are reserves in the All-Star game on Sunday.

Here are our two All-Stars teaming up in the 2005 Dunk contest:

cool stuff
this was really cool, I remember seeing it when it happened, awesome! I was impressed that Amare would share the spotlight with Nash like that, the entire shaq thing is great, but if you look at it from the amare angle, it's got a couple of things. 1. All important, Amare is playing with more energy and drive than I've seen him play with since before the injuries. 2. The presence of shaq on the bench and marion being gone are a big part of this, but the $1,000,000 question, will the effort and intensity be sustainable for Amare (if so, I'm starting to like our chances much more than before the deal). 3. Amare is actually being overshadowed by shaq and shaq hasn't even played a game yet. To bad marion isn't on the team, he would've been more invisible than ever (lol). But will this start to bother Amare after a while (the shaq circus the media has created)? I think if I was shaq, I might not have said this is the Amare stoudamire project, has hints of "he needs help, he needs rescuing, etc", even though we all know this to be true, I think it's mostly all in 2 areas. Effort (which he has clearly shown recently and has simply played like the mvp of the league the last 2 weeks) and defensive. Which will greatly be improved just by getting him out of the center spot. He's got to be happy about that! I just hope Amare isn't the type (like many players) that start to get really bothered by having everything revolve around nash and shaq. I'm a huge nash fan, but it's pretty obvious to me that nash and shaq are on the tail end of their playing days and amare is just coming into his best days.

My theory
It's hard to know for sure until we see them play,  obviously, but with some of the hints being dropped in the AZ Republic articles, I don't think Amare's standing in the "pecking order" is going to change much. In fact, I think he's going to get more touches than ever before, and probably will be sort of a #1A to Shaq's #1. It's Nash that I think will have to give up the spotlight a little, and frankly, I'm not sure he wouldn't welcome that anyway. To me, even though he probably feels honored by all the recognition, MVP awards, etc., he's never really seemed particularly comfortable being thought of as "the guy" on the team. I also think with Shaq in the lineup, the Suns' dependence on Nash is dramatically reduced. I'd imagine even DJ and LB can handle "throw it into Shaq" when running the offense (and DJ can even play a little "D"). In other words, the Suns probably won't look like a lottery team anymore if Nash has to miss a game. Of course, that all depends on Shaq himself staying healthy, and out of foul trouble. But assuming those two very big "if"s, then I think the Suns are a lot more balanced now, and much less dependent Nash to create for them.

Then again....
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/articles/0215nbaallstar.html:
Reporters wanted to know how O'Neal would make Stoudemire the top power forward in the NBA.

"I thought I was already up there," Stoudemire said.

Also interesting in that article is that it mentions something about the Suns going to a triangle offense. I'm not sure if that means literally that's what they're planning, or if it was just some reporter kidding around in reference to Shaq's Laker days. Probably the latter, but read for yourself:
As much as the O'Neal tutoring seems like a backhanded compliment, the idea that he received more suggestions Friday about the Suns going to a triangle offense (one) than his knees' health is a testament to Stoudemire's return to his 2005 All-Star form.

I love it
From Paul Coro's blog talking about Nash and Dirk being good buddies:
But while Nash was allowed to walk away from Dalls, it seems that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban now wants to have a veteran point guard again by trying to make the Jason Kidd trade.

"No comment," Nowitzki said.

Too funny.

the dunk competition
Well,

I like the shooting stars, I missed the suns turn though, have to rewatch it online

Nash for being such a great game 3 pt shooter really shot poorly in the competition, makes me wonder if after all the mvp attention if he threw it a little bit. Think about it, (it's unlikely..but for fun, go with this idea) Nash wants one thing more than anything...to win a title. I think Nash (last yr in particular, and to some extent still) has become a target.

Here's the thought, if Nash wins this contest, and the suns get into the playoffs, I think it's an easy jump to make that he'd be guarded tighter than if he bows out like he did...

Alright, Nash just blew it, scratch above,
Kapono was a total stud!

The skills challenge, they need to add some fun stuff to make it better,

My idea...

Forget the side to side avoiding the cardboard players thing, instead, let's focus on fun.

a.I say we have them run twice around the court while dribbling 2 basketballs, at full speed

b.Then instead of 2 passing things, maybe 5 all in a row but with a player in a dunk tank that will get dunked if all 5 passes are made on the first attempt..

c. (back to work...)

forgot
Howard was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus Green's birthday cake dunk was cool.

That was possibly the best dunk contest I've ever seen.

Hmm...
Just got back and skimmed threw all this stuff on DVR. Man, what a lot of jibber-jabber and commercials for so little actual content. Anyway...

Nash looked pretty embarrassed after his three-point debacle. I doubt he threw it. I think it's just that he didn't take it particularly all that seriously, plus (according to AZ Republic) he didn't really practice for it either.

The dunk contest was great! Very happy Dwight Howard got it. He totally got robbed on that sticker dunk last year. Great to see him come back strong and take some revenge. That Superman dunk was amazing!

yep
awesome, my wife and I also thought he got robbed last yr on the sticker dunk.

More on Dwight Howard's big night
Check this out:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/allstar2008/news/story?id=3249672

About midway down the page, there's a photo of Howard hugging the trophy he won for the dunk contest. Look at how happy he is. It may as well have been the Larry O'Brien trophy.

Also, Henry Abbott has a piece on TrueHoop about Howard and his preparation for the contest:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-30-68/Flying-is-Hard-Work.html

Pretty clear that he took this thing very seriously, and really really wanted to win (and was really disappointed he didn't get a better chance last year). That's pretty cool with so many others treating the events as "obligations" that the league forces them to do (e.g., Nash, although I can certainly see his side of the argument too).

ok...
all star game is on, I'm working on my laptop with it in the background, and they're playing the canada anthem and the U.S. anthem. why both?? just because of Nash?? Why not play the german anthem for dirk, etc etc.... what am I missing? Of course, never happen, but it would've been funny if they had some bad flute player for the canada anthem and really do up the u.s. anthem with like 100 pro musicians, i did like wallace and lebron dancing to the music, I don't dance, I hate dancing, but, there are times when you have to, 1. at your wedding, or anyone else's your attending as a guest (with dancing..important...don't need any solo will ferrell streaking going on) 2. at the nba all star game in n.o. with music and a show like that, texsun, great points on howard, he's been a favorite of mine for awhile now, I'd swap any player on any team for him, between his break dancing with shaq and other stuff, he seems genuine, where, as you accurately point out, nash looks like he's in pain being there, I haven't seen such an awkward smile since I took my 3rd grade pictures.

Anthems
I doubt it's just because of Nash. More likely, it's because there's an NBA franchise in Canada.

this nba cares stuff....
seriously, you don't see mlb or nfl doing this, it's got good intentions, but it's painful. Even golfers don't have to do this stuff, they talk with their wallets, all the money golf donates, its staggering, I bet the nba is very small in comparison by percentage...just a guess Golfers and N.O. curious how nba compares...

Most notable thing about the ASG
The two tone uniforms sucked big rocks. I can't be the only one that was confused by the Silver-backed East and White-fronted West.

Is it that difficult to make a jersey with only one color and for the colors of the two teams to be different enough that they can easily be distinguished at a glace?

saw this also
It was comical how hard it was to tell who was who! Add a feather in the cap of the nba and it's decisions...sadly
