Game Day Open Thread: Phoenix Suns vs. Detroit Pistons

Phoenix Suns
vs.

Detroit Pistons
38-17 40-15
12:30 PM Mountain / 2:30 PM Eastern
TV: ABC
Probable starters:
Steve Nash PG Chauncey Billups
Raja Bell SG Richard Hamilton
Grant Hill SF Tayshaun Prince
Amare Stoudemire PF Antonio McDyess
Shaquille O'Neal C Rasheed Wallace

Putting up the game thread a little early since we have an afternoon tip-off time. Keeping the preview brief since the hour is late (or early, depending on how you look at it): More of this, please.

OK, a few more points would be nice too.

[Update 11:47 AM MT]: Here is Hawk42's preview from the comments:

The Pistons present unique problems. They are:

Chauncey Billups - he will have his way with Nash. CB is just the kind of burly point guard that gives Steve problems. I would like to see DJ on him for stretches.

Tayshawn Prince - He is one of the few around that is quick enough and long enough to give Grant Hill problems.

Rasheed Wallace - That darned guy always seems to hit a few crucial threes. He is a load down low when he wants to be, and can easily get STAT in foul trouble. The write-up says Shaq is on him, but I won't be surprised if D'A puts the quicker Amare on Rasheed, and Shaq on The Traitor. Ed. The Probable Starters aren't necessarily a matchup of who will guard who. Just taking what's in the official Game Notes.

From a Piston perspective, they have nobody to guard Shaq, and we should take advantage of that. Also, Diaw is a matchup nightmare, and I hope Boris comes out with fire in his belly. Those two players are my keys to the game.

For a view from the Piston's side, visit Pistons Nation.

From the paper of record:

Suns guard Leandro Barbosa is cleared to play today after taking three stitches for a blow above his eye that took him out of Friday's game.

Live blogging is a go. Check the comments of this post after tipoff.

what a great week for suns fans
this has been, and for someone like me, out of town, to have all 3 games be on cable or national tv, cool!

Game prospects
For me also, although the Friday game messed with my wife's fashion shows on TLC.

Shaq
at some point Shaq is going to find his range in the post and against a smaller Piston front line it might be today. I think the bench's are key too. If LB can come back and play well and pick up the tempo that will be big. The Piston's are much deeper this year and will be up for this game. I look for game 3 of our mini playoff pre-view week to be just as intense and fun as the last two. I hope so anyway since I am taking my 8 y/o and he loves a great game!

Please Win
I've had to watch this shit team ever since I started watching basketball.  Boring as hell with a final score in the 70s.  And believe me Rasheed doesn't always hit a couple of crucial threes.  Very often he just clangs one after another off the front of the rim.

On the radio reported that Marks stained calf on Fri which is why he didn't play more but expects to play today per coach D.

There are a LOT of Detroit fans here. Hope they don't suck like Lakers fans.

Game on
Shaq gets the tip, but Suns get a turnover on Amare's pass attempt to Shaq. Pistons return the favor on the other end with the foul on the rebound. Looking like another defensive slugfest in the early going

Q1 9:33 - Interesting note...
ABC announcers seem to think the Suns will struggle to score enough points in the playoffs due to not having enough shooters on the floor. Kind of strange to hear the Suns criticized for lack of offense.

...Meanwhile, Detroit take the lid off the basket with two consecutive buckets, and Steve Nash does the honors for the Suns. 4-2, Pistons.

Q1 9:07 - Bell for three!
Um... ABC, you were saying something about shooters?

Good sign for Bell to hit one early.

Q1 5:47 - Nice defense
Got back just in time to see the Suns force a 24-second violation. Amare's shot-blocking played a prominent role. Looks like Diaw took the floor for Shaq while I was out of the room.

Q1 5:13 - Billups three-ball
Don't want to get that started. Especially since Nash's three hasn't made an appearance so far.

Q1 3:49 - LB gets bailed out
That looked like it was going to be a pass to nowhere, but he gets the foul. Pistons over the limit, so free throws.

...One of two for LB.

Q1 2:30 - ABC's Oscar Nominations
From Van Gundy: CP3 for Best Actor
TPrince for Best Supporting
Ginobili for Best Foreign

...omitted Best Picture. That would be the Suns. Or maybe that's "Best Blockbuster"?

Q1 1:36 - Ugliest free throw yet
...from Shaq in a Suns uniform. Um, big guy, generally it helps to get it above the rim.

...Misses the second too, and wouldn't have mattered anyway thanks to the lane violation

THE PAIN
you'd think he could figure out how not to fall over the line and is it that hard to put arc on the shot, give it a better chance!!! I feel the ex shaq free throw pain....it's deep....I'm off to go get some aspirin, detroit is making this look easy (beating us)

I have the same thought
About the "Mavs Men" when I go to games here in Dallas. Nothing about pot-bellied, middle-aged men in tight outfits and half-shirts is remotely appealing in the visual sense. They're a friendly bunch of guys though (met them once).

Besides, I don't think "sexy" is the reaction they're going for to begin with.

by TexSUN on Feb 24, 2008 3:07 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

After one
Break can't come soon enough for the Suns who have fallen behind by 11, and trail 27-16. They're on pace to score 64 for the game, and prove ABC's point that they no longer have enough shooting on the floor. Somehow, I expect those numbers to change. They'd better. Shooting 29% AND getting out-rebounded won't get it done.

43-30, Pistons.

suns waking up
let's hope they can keep it going, i've noticed detroit has a player hanging back on the suns inbound pass to slow down the suns pushing it up the court, smart, but what's really been killing us is not being able to stop them from scoring.. within 8! Come on ...keep it going..

by jasonsuns1 on Feb 24, 2008 1:24 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 3:57 - Psyche!
Nash with the unexpected pass to Amare, after looking like he was going for a futile attempt to take Chauncey Billups off the dribble. Even Amare looked surprised, but not surprised enough to miss the jumper. 47-39, Pistons after the two free throws on the other side.

by TexSUN on Feb 24, 2008 1:27 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q2 2:09 - We have a run alright
...only it's the Pistons making one, not the Suns. Lead up to 10, and Shaq just committed a flagrant meaning two free throws and the ball for the Pistons. Maybe the big guy just couldn't stop his momentum?

well, if the suns start scoring like they normally do, everything would be fine, we're missing a lot of shots,

by jasonsuns1 on Feb 24, 2008 1:43 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

At the half
So much for that 5-point prediction. Suns are down by 18 heading into halftime.

Well, you don't win many games shooting 39% while letting your opponent shoot 51% and losing the battle on the boards by near double-digits (26-17). Amare, Nash, and Bell are the bright spots from the field. Hill, Diaw, and Shaq, not so much.

Good news: Nash's assist numbers are better. 5, which I think is the same as he had for the whole game on Friday. This with the Suns shooting a combined 39%. Turnovers are way down too from Friday's awful showing (on pace to cut that in half). Suns have a combined 5 fouls to the Pistons' 10, and no Sun has more than one.

Guess that wasn't a three?
Or maybe he missed it. Only shows one in the boxscore. Out of four, for extra measure. OK, ABC, you got me. (Check back with me next time he has one of those 6-of-7 nights from three, though).

Q3 6:43 - The game encapsulated right there
...Nash misses a three, Shaq misses the putback at point-blank range at the rim. Pistons score on the TPrince jumper.

Lead up to 25 now after the Pistons score again. I don't think the real Suns have gotten out of bed yet. Some kind of impostors are at the USAC today.

Diaw gets the easy one on the fast break.

Meanwhile, ABC crew thinks LB should start to get more shooting on the floor. Fine, but wouldn't we just be exchanging one three-point shooter for another? And we'd lose Bell's defense against the opponent's starting PG to boot.

...of course, last I heard, the number back up the ABC guys with LB as a starter having us something like 6-2 if I recall. But not sure what the quality of competition was at the 2-guard spot in those games.

"I'm crying inside right now, because I feel like we're playing so hard and we still couldn't come up with a win." - Miami forward Shawn Marion, after scoring four points in a loss that put the Heat's record at 0-5 since acquiring him from the Suns

On one hand, I feel bad for him. On the other, he did ask to be traded.

simply sad but..
he didn't know how good he had it, even with today's loss, I'm sure everyone of us suns fans still expects the suns to win a good percentage of their games, Miami ....wow...its like a car crash...I almost want to watch just for the streak to continue
