Game Day Open Thread: Phoenix Suns at Memphis Grizzlies

Phoenix Suns
at

Memphis Grizzlies
38-18 14-42
6:00 PM Mountain / 8:00 PM Eastern
TV: My45 HD, NBA League Pass
Probable starters:
Steve Nash PG Mike Conley
Raja Bell SG Juan Carlos Navarro
Grant Hill SF Rudy Gay
Amare Stoudemire PF Hakim Warrick
Shaquille O'Neal C Kwame Brown

What better way for the Suns to put that "ugh"-fest that was Sunday's Detroit beat-down behind them than a game against...

...wait for it....

Kwame Brown! He of the dunk-missing, ball-dropping, pass-botching, cake-throwing baby hands.

The new-look Suns face the new-look Grizzlies tonight for the first time this season. The Suns are no doubt thrilled to be facing Kwame instead of Pau Gasol, who picked them apart in last week's game against the Lakers. The Grizzlies were already on the wrong end of the standings even before their give-away of the Suns' new nemesis to the Lakers, so it's hard to imagine this won't be a repeat of Sunday with the Suns administrating the beating this time. Besides, it's the Grizzlies' fault (or more to the point, their front office's fault) that the Suns are looking up at the Lakers in the standings. Time to exact some revenge!

Still, lest Karma come looking for me after the above paragraph, here's a bit from the other side: The Grizzlies have beaten San Antonio once this season. Minnesota too. Of course, that was before they sent Pau off to his dream job. Seriously, no excuses for the Suns not to win this one. Zero, zilch, nada. The guys at 3 Shades of Blue would seem to agree.

Live blogging is on. Check the comments of this post after tipoff.

[Update 16:25 MT]: The latest on Brent Barry: Still undecided (or just making it look that way?).

Bad news for the Rockets:

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/articles/0226yao.html

Too bad. They're the only Texas team I (sorta) like these days.

Other news...
What's the deal on Barry? Is he coming along for the ride? If the Suns sign him...we're gonna be the oldest team in the league... right?

Posted this in another thread
Obviously, this isn't meant to be taken as gospel at this point:

Found via Phxsuns.net:

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articles/0226barrytuesday.html

Looks like a draft of an article that isn't finished yet, but sure sounds like the Suns missed out on Barry. (Not surprised, really, if that turns out to be the case, but did expect he'd wait out SA, not sign somewhere else. Who's even left from that list?).

by TexSUN on Feb 26, 2008 12:16 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

BTW..
...That could just as easily be one of TWO articles. I.e., maybe there's another draft around that is written from a "Suns got him" perspective. So definitely don't take that as the final word on it.

Kerr in SA chasing Barry
Per Gambo on KTAR - Kerr went to SA to meet w/ Barry to try and get him. Still no word.

Do you guys want this guy to come?
I mean really, do you think he will make the team better? He is a great three point shooter, comes from a defense oriented team. BUT he is 36 and injured.

I have mixed feeling about this deal... What do you guys think?

by PanamaSun on Feb 26, 2008 2:35 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

No lose
I don't have a problem w/ him coming b/c he won't cost anything much. Its not like we are trading DJ for him.

I don't think like a bunch of people that we need another shooter. I am listening to the local radio talking about how Raja and LB aren't shooting as well as they used to but the reason is they aren't getting wide open looks anymore.

I guess the idea is that you put him on the floor w/ Shaq and IF Shaq is doubled you can have Barry open for a 3. That of course is based on Shaq being able to score in the post (hasn't yet) and demanding the double.

Anyway, I think Barry is fine but I don't think he's a difference maker.

Sam Cassell on the other hand I think is a big addition to play 10-15 minutes when Nash is out and if LB is not on you can even play him with Nash at times. I don't think they will get Cassell though b/c he costs too much.

Barry and Cassell
I don't know if the Suns "need" either guy, but both would be additions of some value.  The Suns still have a roster spot to fill, and both are guys with veteran championship experience, and both can shoot.  They'd be good parts of an improved (or rather, finally existent) second unit, but they wouldn't be in at the end of the game or anything.

No Barry decision and Suns not interested in Cassell.

Thanks for the update
Was going to post that and also one from the SA paper that said he's basically not going to be in a rush to make a decision (in other words "I'm going to wait a while so it won't raise suspicion when I re-sign with the Spurs"). I'll dig up the link when I get the chance. (Been a crazy afternoon)

Phoenix - where clank

by Phoenix Stan on Feb 26, 2008 3:57 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, with the situation he's in...
...being injured and still needing a couple of weeks healing time, having played (and won rings) with SA for years, and having his family well settled there, I really don't see why (all other things *cough*money*cough* being equal), he wouldn't just go ahead and wait out the Spurs. They obviously want him back. There was an article in that same SA newspaper yesterday that they haven't even taken the nameplate off his locker yet. It just really doesn't make sense on any level that he'd sign with another team unless he's (a) really, really ticked that the Spurs traded him, (b) been promised a LOT more playing time than he would get there, or (c) been offered a lot more money. My guess is that the Spurs and Barry are just putting up a good front of making it a tough decision to avoid another Stackhouse situation. But you never know...

good analysis
I see it the same...over in S.A, apparently they're not idiots, unlike the mavs head office and the silly mistakes they've been making. But it'd be nice to get barry, especially with the spurs getting k.thomas

by jasonsuns1 on Feb 26, 2008 5:25 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Hm...
Couldn't you say our head office has made more? The long contract for Banks, not re-signing House, not picking up Rondo, losing K. Thomas and James Jones, the Shaq trade, the Diaw contract...

by zooropa on Feb 26, 2008 5:50 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

suns made a lot of mistakes..but
most other teams the same, but I am glad the suns have kept L.B, Amare (even though I pushed for Garnett trade), and Nash. It's not all bad, just mostly (aliens)...the aliens come out at night ..mostly :-)

by jasonsuns1 on Feb 26, 2008 6:10 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

And House
let's not forget what a crappy defender he was, that he really couldn't handle the ball/run the offense and that his best asset, his shot, disappeared in the playoffs.

I deffinately think Banks was an upgrade in talent level but for a lot of reasons (character?) he didn't work out here.

But pound for pound Banks is a far better player then House and if Eddie were here we would be all over him for his one dimensional game.

You may not like the moves, but...
  1.  The Shaq trade hasn't played out yet.
  2.  Who would've kept Jones shooting 33%?
  3.  $16 million is a lot of money to pay for a one-dimensional 35 year old big man.
  4.  After the way Diaw played in 06, anyone would have given him that contract.
  5.  Eddie House disappeared toward the end of the season, and appeared spent.
That leaves Banks and Rondo, which were indeed whiffs.

good points
Shaq...all I needed to see was him diving for loose balls, in close games, I think he'll do fine, if only he could hit his free throws, even at 65-70%, what a difference it'd be

I don't miss Jones,

Marion and the heat have still yet to win!

I agree on Diaw, and he has shown some great moments here and there recently, and having marion gone opens up his time, hopefully like when amare was gone

House...yep

game on...

by jasonsuns1 on Feb 26, 2008 6:13 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Hm...
Didn't we just pay $20 million for a one-dimensional, 35 year old big man?

Also, James Jones is tied for the league lead in 3 point accuracy. I think his shooting troubles started that year with the new ball, and have obviously returned to form...

by zooropa on Feb 26, 2008 6:15 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Shaq
Shaq is hardly one dimensional.  People never devised defenses for Kurt Thomas.  Even now Shaq is a huge consideration for opposing coachess preparing for a game.  You have a right to be down after Detroit, but I think you are losing some perspective.

I admit Kurt has better free throw form.

Game on
Bad news: No Kwame in the starting lineup for the Grizzlies. I think I'm going to cry. Waaaaa...

OK, moment over.

Memphis is first to the board, but only once. Suns offense picking up where it left off on Sunday so far, which is not good news. Fortunately, the Grizzlies aren't doing much better and only lead by 2.

Q1 9:46 - Lid off the basket
Amare and Nash score to tie it up at 4.

Q1 8:21 - Nash with the charge
Guess that part of his game is still working.

Meanwhile, Memphis announcers ponder the MVP advantage on that call.

Q1 7:23 - SMASH by Grant Hill!
I think that's the best one we've seen from him to date by far.

Q1 And we have our first D'oh! moment
Nash with the bad pass leads to wide-open fastbreak for the Grizzlies. Nash gets it back with the jumper. 13-10, Grizzlies.

Here's my first prediction for the Shaq era: CP3 will pass Nash for the assist lead this season. JKidd might too. And will might be a good thing--it means other Suns (e.g., Shaq) are setting up the offense instead of it all relying on one guy.

Q1 5:10 - We're back...
...after a short technical difficulty. Internet connection went out.

Got back just in time to see a nice dunk by Amare. Diaw at the line, hits one shaqs the other. 16-14, Suns.

by TexSUN on Feb 26, 2008 6:26 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q1 3:05 - Ack!
Grizzlies with a chance to take the lead after the Nash turnover. Air-ball saves the day, but Nash now has two turnovers and just one assist, to back up my earlier point. (The 3-3 shooting, including a three-ball is nice, though).

All tied up at 21.

by TexSUN on Feb 26, 2008 6:30 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Q1 00:38 - Speaking of airballs
Here's another prediction: DJ will lead the team in airballs. Seriously, love the kid, but he's got to get past the yips on offense.

by TexSUN on Feb 26, 2008 6:34 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

After one
Good news: The Suns are up by five and they're shooting 63%. Bad news: Somehow, that's only good for 28 points. Are the days of 30-point quarters behind us?

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies are shooting 40% (good) but have 6 more attempts (bad). Four turnovers plus allowing three offensive rebounds would be the reason for that.

Here's another interesting stat: Mike Conley has six assists. That's more than the entire Suns team. We have five. So my earlier statement that it's good for Nash to lag in assists only holds if other players on the team ARE actually making the plays.

Q2 11:21 - No luck for DJ
Takes it to the rim only to get blocked by Rudy Gay. Then gets called for a foul to boot. Rough night for the rookie so far.

Q2 11:08 - We have a Linton Johnson sighting
Looks like we're giving him an early look.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies tie it up with the three.

...and the Grizzlies announcers show they have no clue about Suns history.

Nash to Amare for the wide-open dunk. More, please.

Q2 4:18 - X 2
Nash and Amare do it again.

OK, Shaq may make the Suns "better" (still up for debate), but one thing I think we can say right now is he does NOT make them more fun to watch.

Meanwhile, Nash+Amare for the third time makes it 50-42.

LB with the steal and the easy layup.

At the half
Three-ball make by the Grizzlies cuts the lead down to eight headed into the half. Still, with the huge caveat that it IS the Grizzlies, some numbers that are good:
  1. Suns broke 60 points for a half while holding their opponent to less than that.
  2. Suns shot 55% and held Grizzlies to 43%.
  3. Suns "only" got out-rebounded by three.
  4. Six turnovers, about the average for the season.
  5. 15 fouls by the Grizzlies and Shaq has gone an amazing 4-6 from the line.
  6. Steve Nash is halfway to his assist average (for the first time in the Shaq era).
Bad:
  1. 2-of-10 from three. Raja and LB are the main culprits (0-3 for Raja, 1-4 for LB).
  2. Grizzlies are 5-17 from three (42%).
  3. Most of the turnovers have come off steals, and hence increasing the odds of a score by the Grizzlies. 11 more shot attempts for the Grizzlies than the Suns.
So, some positive signs. But it IS the Grizzlies.

Q4 2:32 - Nice steal by LB!
For the wide-open layup and a double-digit lead.

Q4 1:42 - Three-point play by Conley
...on the Nash blocking foul.

...but Raja continues to play fourth-quarter assassin with yet another three. 119-110.

Q4 1:06 - Nash at the line
...much better than Shaq at the line. Shaq sitting on the bench looking not too happy, but this lineup has been working so coach is sticking with it.

Q4 00:39 - Suns are doing a good job...
...of getting Nash the ball for the desperation free throws.

Q4 00:22 - Grizz giving up
Don't even bother to foul Nash this time, so Nash pads his assist total with the pass to LB for the easy layup.

127-113
Wow, that's the hard way to get a 14 point win.

lookin at g-cast
just got home to see game and looks like Suns  abslolutley dominated the boards. (45-34 by my count) that and very balanced scoring with evrybody but Shaq, Bell, and DJ having 15+ pts. Boris needed about 3-4 mins to get that triple double.

And that's the game...
Final score 127-113.

Amare with the post-game interview. Nothing particularly interesting there, just the standard "we picked up the defense in the fourth quarter", etc, and yet another mention of how nice it is to play at his natural position.

I'm going to delay posting the recap a bit. I want to go back and rewatch some of this first, because it's kind of hard to keep up with the visuals when you're typing comments at the same time. I'll put it up later tonight.

In the meantime, thanks everyone who followed along and chimed in. We'll do it again tomorrow.
