My late thoughts on this F**king Deal
(Wrote this while I was away from the blog so its really fresh and therefore really messy)
I need to vent. The idea of this trade happening is an ill-conceived solution for a common problem. This shows the inferiority complex the Suns have in regard to the front court and how it's a detriment to this team. There needs to be a solution to our line-up problem, defensive make-up, and iffy rebounding. THIS is not the way though!
Lets face it Shaq is past his prime. We're not talking about Great Aristotle 2000 Shaq. O'Neal is old, out of shape, and not motivated. Now being part of the Suns, he'll have incentive to win in the playoffs, but the other problems linger. His age and shape will not fit the Phoenix game plan of a full court attack, precision-quick ball distribution, and mobility. He's a circle peg trying to be installed in a square.
Health is a big issue too. Since when has Shaq been healthy in the past few years? The success of Shaq here all depends on his ability to stay healthy and history has proven he can't do it. Why give up players for a man who may not even be able to be there.
Why are we basing everything on one opponent? Yes we have a problem against San Antonio, but we have to get to them first before we worry about them. Other teams will be able to eat an old shell Shaq alive. What guarantee is there that he can even match-up against Duncan? Duncan will maneuver Shaq's ass off and make his strength a non-factor.
We need a tall, medium strength center who can take rebounds, play apt post defense, run with this team, maneuver around the half court to keep our mobile game, and allow Amare to play the 4. An old, injury-prone, outta shape Shaq is not the solution!

It's not that easy, PP
Frye - Handing them Marion would come back to haunt us (Oden, Marion, Aldredge, Roy)
Wallace - washed up, and a locker room cancer. would rather have Rasheed
Curry - You've go to be kidding. He will never rebound, never pass the ball, and has failed in two cities
Camby - I believe the FO wanted him, but there was no interest on Denver's part.
Jermaine O'Neal - this was a possibility for me, since Indy has Jeff Foster. Although it was clear that he does not fit into the Pacers' new up tempo offense, and Indy plays better without him. If we wanted to deal with the Pacers, I'd want Granger and Foster for the UNLV pair.
My choice? Brendan Haywood and Antawn Jamison for Marion and Banks. But why would Washington do that?
It all comes down to which GM can sell refrigerators to eskimos. That is clearly Mitch Kupchak and not Steve Kerr.

Plus, Amare doesn't have to play center all game, which will help him on the fouls thing tremendously!! As long as the suns can help Shaq and keep him playing 25-30 minutes a game, I think we're going to be happier than most are currently thinking.

Good to read some anti-trade stuff here
I hated this deal from the time I heard about it, and I still do. If the Suns actually win the championship this season, I will hand it to Kerr & Sarver, but the way it appears right now, it was a knee jerk reaction to the Lakers getting Pau Gasol. My question is what were the Suns doing before Lakers snared Gasol at bargain basement price? He was the kind of center the Suns needed, not a Diesel who cannot move and is not likely to stay healthy for extended periods. The worst part of the deal was to give up our versatile defender, and not even get a draft pick in return. Shaq is washed up, no matter how much he denies it, and the fans are completely blind right now. I don't doubt his desire to play well, but the body may not be willing. The Suns medical staff is very good, but they cannot perform miracles.
One area where Shaq does bring something positive to the Suns is - CHANGE. That alone is going to energize the team, and help them forget about what happened in the playoffs last year. Whether that will be enough to win a championship, I don't know. You still need players who can play in order to win.
The Suns have played up till now as if they had a hangover from the loss to SA. Although I hate the hoopla over the arrival of Shaq, it will help the team forget their negative experiences and help them look forward. I still maintain that they did not have to give up Marion to get Shaq. Not many teams would have given up a lot to get him at this point. This is where rookie GM Kerr and inexperienced owner Sarver erred. Actually Sarver's interest was in the marketability of this player (sell more souveniors/jerseys/t-shirts, etc.) and not so much in winning. BTW Sarver lied to the fans and the players when he declared that the Suns were not going to trade any of their core, and one week later they were celebrating Shaq's arrival.
I don't buy for one moment that Marion wanted to leave. He did ask to be traded at the start of the season, but he never asked for it again and he seemed committed to the Suns. He was clearly upset/disappointed about the trade, but he was gracious about it. I wish him well in Miami. I hope he can win a championship with another team.

Marion
- You don't know he never asked for it again
- What are the Suns supposed to think, "Oh, he'll forget about it"
I think you're giving him too much of the benefit of the doubt. This is a player who did not develop his game in the last six years or so with the team, and one who basically shut down a la Kobe in game 5 last year because he didn't want to carry the load.
