Worst Case Scenario

The worst case scenario for the Suns would be if they kept falling in the standings, and missed the playoffs, making them lottery bound, and their pick going to Seattle. While in the East, the Hawks make the playoffs and stay out of the lottery. Making the pick they've waited 3 years for, worse than what we would have gotten with our own. I don't think this will actually happen, but I would say it would be just another example of the Suns terrible luck in the draft.

Actually...
As much as the Suns missing the playoff would suck, that 2008 pick is lottery-protected, so if the Suns and Hawks both miss the playoffs, the Suns would actually end up with TWO lottery picks.

So there's a kind of bright side to that situation.

It is?
I haven't read anywhere that the 2008 pick was lottery protected (the 2010 pick either for that matter). In fact, that's part of why I was so infuriated about that trade. It's like tempting Murphy's Law to make darn certain you land in the lottery one of those two years. Even with the old team, we were one long-term Nash injury away from the lottery at any given moment. Trading those two picks unprotected was the main reason I hated the deal.

agreed
i completely agree. Why couldn't we protect them, especially the 2010 pick. A lot can happen in 2 years, hell, a lot can happen in two weeks. The Suns took a lottery protected pick when we gave up a great player in Joe Johnson, yet we couldn't protect our pick when all we are getting back is cash? Doesn't make any sense

I may be a big, fat liar
I had read a couple of different articles that had indicated that the 2008 pick is lottery-protected.  However, the only source I can find right now to back that up is nbadraft.net.

So, Stymo's probably right.  We could get boned big time.
