A ZonaFlash Off-Center Suns-Spurs Preview.

Immovable Object meets Irresistible Force Immovable Object

In Kung Fu movies and comic books, it's traditional to pit like-skilled and like-powered adversaries against each other. It's just more suspenseful that way.  For example, the final battle of X-Men 2 (X2) involves Wolverine facing Deathstrike, because, hey, of all the superpowers in the comic book universe, they happen to have the exact same powers.

Star-divide

The Suns-Spurs Playoffs will be just like that.   Sure one's more brutish and the other one's prettier, but of all possible matchups, these two teams are now among the most similar in the playoffs.   Unlike years past, this SUNS team is no longer undersized.  And despite the early offense the Suns run, the Suns have not appeared particularly speedy, especially defensively, compared to the younger teams of the NBA.  Of all possible matchups against the teams with home court (Lakers, Hornets, Spurs and Jazz), the Spurs are the team the Suns could most plausibly beat. And they'll do it not by raining threes (see below), but by pounding the rock.

Both teams feature MVP caliber charity stripe bricklayers anchored to the low post.  The difference is that it's now Spurs fans who talk about high PNRs and doubling down low.  Both teams feature defensive all-teamers that spread defenses with the 3-ball.   Both teams boast of a sixth-man of the year, the difference is that Spurs fans are really proud their best player is getting 6th man recognition.   Both teams are old as hell.  The Suns starting line-up aged 19 years since last year.  The Spurs bench might be the oldest in the league.

And speaking of the two oldest teams in the NBA, check out how I subtly lied to you. You're now thinking this series is going to be like X2 fresh and exciting. Unh-unh. This series between the NBA's two crankiest and whiniest old teams is going to be more like Grumpy Old Men. Expect to see more shenanigans, bitching and moaning than ever.

A Few Key Matchups

Because of cross-matching we look at specific matchups of interest.  Brought to you by Match.com.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Duncan vs. Shaq - We got this one.  Duncan will be defended by either Shaq or Amare depending on foul situation.

Kurt on Amare - Kurt Thomas is a very smart pro.  He has been able to lure Amare into stupid fouls at both ends of the floor. Kurt is also a much better rebounder than Amare, so ol' crazy eyes may hurt the Suns in unexpected ways this series.

Bowen on Nash -   Solved.  The Spurs have unwisely overused Bowen on Nash in an attempt to wear Nash down.  In the last game, Nash was completely unfazed by Bowen's defense.

Nash on Bowen -   We hope that Nash doesn't leave the Spurs best 3 point shooter late in games.  With Shaq, Nash has even less reason than ever to leave Bowen.

Nash/Hill on Tony Parker -   Tony Parker has struggled a bit this year, so it's unclear how much credit to give to Nash and Hill.  However, Nash did show plausible capability to stay relatively in front of Parker and to steer Parker into the Big Shaqtus.   The caveat is that our bigs took big fouls in both Spurs games, so failures on Nash's D lead to foul trouble for Shaq and Amare.  Hill in the 4th quarter continues to provide a nice change up and for a game or two Hill appeared to lock down Parker.

Raja Bell on Manu -   This will continue to be a treat.  Manu the Masochist and Raja Bell both live for physical games.  Raja's D, according to Hollinger, is better than ever.  I hope we don't have to see LB on Manu.  Manu is just too big.  Possibly Hill on Manu a little bit? I can only hope Manu continues to recover slowly from injury.

Bench -   Our younger bench should have the advantage, but the Spurs bench is battle-tested if worn out. I like our chances to gain ground with Nash resting.

Bowen the X-Factor -   This is a matchup of wills.  Bowen still has the ability to hurt someone or take one of our stars out of the game.  He could hurt Nash. He will likely hurt Nash.  Even more likely, he will piss off Amare enough to get Amare ejected or suspended.

One Final Matchup:

Suns Fans vs. Spurs Fans.

For the Sweet Young Fans of the SUNS, the SUNS should win this series and send the aged Spurs to an overdue grave.   We're younger, smarter, sweeter, funnier and better-looking. And yes, you wish we served fries with that!

Remember how I said the two teams were the most similar?  They are, but the Spurs will have no answer for Amare!

3 Reasons This Series Will Go 7

This series will not be a walk in the park, for three reasons.

  • First, the series will go 7 because the Suns have never shown much of a killer instinct.  How many times have the Suns toyed around and gone seven games with a lesser team? That they do not have homecourt is actually funny because most times when they do, they squander it by losing the very first game of the series.  The Suns are often caught on their heels by their opponents increased intensity, be it an in-game comeback or the first game of the playoffs.
  • Second, the Suns will not be able to count on the three ball.
  • Third, despite the ongoing locker room lovefest, evidence suggests that the Suns have not yet fully solved their on-court chemistry issues.

Let's look at these last two points in turn.

What's the Forecast from Downtown?  Gridlock!

Don't expect to see a lot of great 3 point shooting in the Suns-Spurs series.

In four games this year, the league's best sharpshooters, the Suns, have shot a paltry 28% from 3 compared to 39% as a team for the season.   In the two games since Shaq arrived, the Suns also have 8 fewer attempts per game against the Spurs than they average for the season (13.5 versus 21.5).  The Spurs in those four games, led by Bruce Bowen, Ime Udoka and Manu Ginobili, have actually made more threes with a better percentage (20 of 62 or 32%) than the Suns.

Only Nash, Bell and Barbosa can be trusted to hit the outside shot and recenlty only Bell has been sharp.  Watching Barbosa badly miss wide open ones has been a jarring and a shockingly regular occurrence.  On the bright side, bad misses result in longer rebounds.  Nash has seemed hampered by aches and pains, his 11 for 34 shotting in April putting a late damper on his virtual tie with Jason Kapono for best three point shooting percentage in the NBA.  Nash has shot 3 times as many threes as Jason Kapono (4.8 compared to 1.5 attempts, respectively) and also has increased difficulty due to having to create his shots rather than catch and shoot.  Gordan Giricek's 37.5% shooting from 3 is respectable, but he attempts less than 2.3 tries per game and makes less than 1 per game.

Overall, because of the Suns recent 3 point shooting limitations and the Spurs success at defending the arc, expect the three point shooting to be a wash.  Where Bruce Bowen killed the Suns last year late in games from 3, expect him to be covered better now that Duncan no longer requires a double-team down low.

What's the Frequency, Kenneth?

Unlike most teams, the Suns have not had the luxury to work out all of the kinks yet.  It's these kinks that result in offensive stinkers like the 4th quarter against Dallas.  The offense lurches forward and stalls.  On average it's great, but quarter-to-quarter, game-to-game, the consistency is bad.  The main offenders are cold shooting and turnovers.  Not much can be done about poor shooting, especially when your best shooter has shoulder problems.  But turnovers are the direct result of confusion and players attempting to do too much, or things they are not accustomed to doing.

Defensively, those turnovers also rear its evil head as they are cashed in for high percentage shots and fouls.  The Suns still struggle with energy and a confusing array of defensive schemes.  They have looked slow and sluggish when trying to switch from standing around in the zone to man-to-man and from man-to-man to the double/switch run-around defense of the pre-Shaq era. It's hard to switch speeds and intensity in a game.

Overall, those turnovers are killer on both ends of the court.  Further they have persisted and continue to persist.  One point of hope, however, is that the Suns assist-to-turnover ratio was higher in the past 10 games than it had been all season.

Some Trends and Stuff

Oh and here's some indicators I cooked up just to look at the current state of the team.  I use 7-game moving averages b/c the playoffs are 7-game series.  Both shooting AND attempts are both down at the arc AND at the line.  That ain't so good.  Assist-to-Turnovers are the highest they've been all year.  That's good.

Awesome preview....
Great work! I am still saying Spurs are done. Suns in 6. But you can't argue with the numbers...

Suns progress
Despite Phoenix having fallen to the Spurs in past playoff series, this is the year they send San Antonio out. The one person Duncan has trouble guarding is Shaq, and when you throw in a dominant Amare, it's going to be tough in the post. I think Phoenix is the stronger team this year, and they'll push forward in six.

by DocSportsGuru on Apr 18, 2008 9:42 AM MDT   0 recs

You guys are funny
The Shaq Era? He has been with the Suns for several months, I dont think that qualifies as "Era". You guys say that Duncan has trouble guarding Shaq. Man you guys just repeat what the media says. Dont you remember that Duncan and Shaq met every year when Shaq was with the Lakers. Timmy did a hell of a job, Shaq can barely guard Timmy. Come on Suns fans, you guys know deep down that this is the worst outcome for the playoffs. Nash will never win a championship!! Never, like nowitzki. Duncan, parker, Manu will flip that playoff switch and turn on their defense. The spurs and the fans were bored with the regular season. Now the real season starts, and in Championship city, San Antonio, we are getting ready for Fiesta and a River Parade in June. See yall there. hahaa

Learn. To. Read.

It was a Spurs blogger begging that Shaq be double-teamed every possession.  Click to see.  You clicked on everything else.

Pray
Yea you guys better Pray like that little girl in your pic.  Pray we dont beat up your guys. Pray Amare does do something stupid (not very smart guy). Pray Bowen and Horry dont take out your guys. Pray you actually win. Thats all you guys have are prayers.

by bigdog2000 on Apr 18, 2008 9:53 AM MDT   0 recs

Is that all you got?
Seriously man....your response to a detailed breakdown of the series is that?

I get you have to support your old, broken down team (Horry won't even play btw) but please. You need to bring something better then that if you are going to come in here and talk smack....

No need for prayer..
"Stood in firelight, sweltering. Bloodstain on chest like map of violent new continent. Felt cleansed. Felt dark planet turn under my feet and knew what cats know that makes them scream like babies in night.

Looked at sky through smoke heavy with human fat and God was not there. The cold, suffocating dark goes on forever and we are alone. Live our lives, lacking anything better to do. Devise reason later. Born from oblivion; bear children, hell-bound as ourselves, go into oblivion. There is nothing else.

Existence is random. Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose. This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces. It is not God who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It's us. Only us. Streets stank of fire. The void breathed hard on my heart, turning its illusions to ice, shattering them. Was reborn then, free to scrawl own design on this morally blank world.

Was Rorschach.

Broken down but who are the Champs?
Yea we are old, but who was the old man that took out Nash and got Amare to do something dumb? Yea, thats what I thought. Timmy has four rings not Nash. You guys needed to get Shaq just to hang with us. We will see. The Shaq Timmy matchup is even. Bowen and Nash, slight edge to Nash. Nash v Parker, slight edge to parker. Manu, we got that, Finley vs whoever, slight edge to you guys. But the stuff you cant measure like heart, experience, coolness under pressure, we got that. Spurs in 7....

by bigdog2000 on Apr 18, 2008 11:18 AM MDT   0 recs

The pendulum has swung back the other way at last
bigdog, you're a credit to your chosen team to support them in their twilight, but like the stock market, past performance may not be an indicator of future gains.  This will be playoff meeting 3 in the Nash era, and each year the overall series has moved slowly (far too slowly for the Suns) away from Spur dominance.  Last year's game 4 win by the Suns in San Antonio marked the turning point, even if the suspensions ultimately cost the Suns game 5 and, in all likelihood, the series.

The odds of a repeat of those circumstances are slim.  The primary advantage the Spurs have had each year (size) has been neutralized.  The Suns own experience has grown.  The mental shackles that have kept the Suns from realizing their own greatness have been cast off.  Robert Horry probably won't even play, let alone bury daggers (or hipchecks).  Bowen's reputation has finally caught up to him and cost him a game, you don't think the refs won't be scrutinizing his moves very carefully after last year?  The Daddy now patrols the lane, and all who look upon him know fear.

The Spurs are champions, and they will go down fighting.  But they will go down.

Great Preview
Most impressive.

Should be quite the battle.  I'm inclined to agree that this series will go to seven as well.  The only way I can see different would be if the Suns finally showed that killer instinct and came out and won one of the first two games.

Put down the crack pipe!
"Duncan vs. Shaq - We got this one.  Duncan will be defended by either Shaq or Amare depending on foul situation."

You can't be serious here?! Duncan went head to head with Shaq when he WAS the most dominant big man in the game and did a damn good job. Your wishful thinking is amusing.

"Bowen on Nash -   Solved.  The Spurs have unwisely overused Bowen on Nash in an attempt to wear Nash down.  In the last game, Nash was completely unfazed by Bowen's defense."

If you haven't noticed we now have another "lock down" defender in Ime Udoka. Don't worry, you'll find out who he is soon enough. He and Bowen are going to tag-team Nash like a shower scene in OZ.

"Remember how I said the two teams were the most similar?  They are, but the Spurs will have no answer for Amare!"

When have the Spurs ever had an answer for Amare? He's always gone off for 30pts and then gets dominated on defense. The key is not stopping Amare... it's stopping Nash. And our D, drinks Nash's milkshake. We drink it up.

I do agree with you that this series will go 7. But that will be the last Suns game this year.

by CMoney on Apr 18, 2008 2:56 PM MDT   0 recs

There was a time...
when unlike Lakers fans, Spurs aficionados would keep quiet, preferring to let the team's game do the talking.

But since last year, Spurs fans have been noticeably more belligerent and vocal.

Why?  The only possible explanation is fear, puffing yourselves up like some wild animal about to be eaten by an unmerciful and ravenous predator.

When you know, deep down in your bones, that Stern and Jackson gifted you a title last year, and this year seen your team get beaten like a redheaded stepchild by that very same team swindled by your crime, it's easy to be afraid.

Well, you should be, because we intend to extract full retribution and rub it your faces, like the dogs you are.

by Pliny the Elder on Apr 18, 2008 3:59 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

That was your response?
Haha wow. You're seriously out of touch with reality. But nice try. Oh and my team's game "has done the talking". 4 times.

by CMoney on Apr 18, 2008 4:24 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Pliny, let's not get nasty
You won't be rubbing anything in anyone's face and there are no dogs around here.

Don't put too much stock in regular season games, especially ones in which the Spurs were missing key players. You sound like Cavs fans who claimed that they would drub the Spurs in the Finals b/c they were 2-0 against them during the regular season. We know how that story ended...

You're not seriously still whining about the so-called "gifted title", are you? If the Suns were the better team last year, then why did they make the trade for Shaq? Steve Kerr certainly knows better...

by Key on Apr 18, 2008 4:34 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

This is the NBA fan equivalent of a Yo Mama fight
Trash talk is supposed to be creative, and deliciously insulting.  Nothing wrong with that.   It's not like I'm actually going to schlep my way to San Antonio, breath in the sights and sounds of that city, and pick someone of the street and beat him with a rolled-up newspaper whose headline reads "Suns Win.  Spurs Don't".

This is not Glasgow Rangers vs Glasgow Celtics. No-one is going to get hurt.

Just don't expect me to hold back because I might hurt Spurs fans feelings. I welcome their comebacks, and expect them to hold their ground, if they can do so without being lame or unimaginative.

by Pliny the Elder on Apr 18, 2008 4:55 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh and the reason we traded for Shaq..
is because it was just too hard to compete against both the Spurs and the NBA front-office.

This way, there's no possibility we get screwed, in this series.  And no argument when we win.

I rest my case...
Well Tim did his talking today and proved what I was saying yesterday.

No one can "solve" Tim Duncan. 40 pts - 15 rebounds.
And I'm pretty sure there was a Manu sighting yesterday. Looks like his groin is feeling just fine. Nice game.

by CMoney on Apr 19, 2008 5:06 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Lucky bastards... well played..
Timmy hitting a three to push the game to a 2nd OT.. an unlikely shot to say the least, but a great game from him (16/24, 6 offensive boards ??).  And Manu turned up when it mattered  (Senor Clutch ??).

You guys won this one, fair and square. So we'll take your barbs and such.

I will be shocked if this series doesn't go 7

God I love playoffs

by CMoney on Apr 20, 2008 12:12 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Your team may have done the talking..
but you keep on yapping..  I wonder why ?

I'll concede your ownership of the NBA championship, but that what then and this is now.  Just what have you guys done lately?  We just beat you by 17, a week ago, on your floor, and beat y'all convincingly 5 weeks ago on our floor. You expect me to believe that your team has improved so much in the interim, and is good enough to overcome those losses?  Especially since your injury situation just got worse?

And I'm out of touch with reality ??  My goodness, you must get the stuff you're smoking from Austin.

Let me explain something to you, bubba.  Reality is a big guy called Vinny NoNose, who's gonna come a'knockin', carrying a big stick and beat you all like you owe him money and fucked his sister.  If I were you I'd pay up early, and spare myself.

by Pliny the Elder on Apr 18, 2008 4:47 PM MDT   0 recs

LOL
Settle down son. You're basing this on 2 games....2! I'll remind you that Cleveland swept us last year in the regular season. I'll also remind you that Manu was hurt this past game vs PHX. Yeah, let's see what we've done lately... Won a championship last year, this year we finished 3rd in the toughest western conference in history, and recently unloaded on the Jazz to finish off the season to lock up home court. As far as injuries getting worse... Did you not see that Manu and Barry are back from injury? The only guy hurt is Robert Horry and we're not counting on him. Again.... Nice try. But hey, it's gonna be a great series. May the best team win.

by CMoney on Apr 18, 2008 5:06 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

Brent Barry ?? are you kidding me ?
You really think Brent Barry is the difference between a Spurs series win and a Spurs series loss ?

Manu might have been hurt, but he played 28 mins that game.  He may be off the injured lsit, but I think he's still hurt and not 100%.  Groin injuries are notoriously slow healing.

But there are no excuses here.  Either we win or we don't.  I think we will, and without too much trouble.  If we lost to the Spurs, I'd be unhappy, but not as much as if we lost to the Lakers.

by Pliny the Elder on Apr 18, 2008 5:17 PM MDT   0 recs

Wow...
When did I ever say that Brent Barry is the difference in this series? Please show me where I said that... The difference is Manu Ginobili. Enjoy the show.

Trash talk all in good fun
Ok guys...lets get real for a minute. The Suns v Spurs in the first round with home court to the Champs is the worst outcome for Steve Kerr and the Suns. Duncan has never, let me repeat never exited the playoffs in the first round since he came into the league. Now all mainstream media BS to the side, Duncan is one the top 7-9 players to EVER play the game. Let me list the rewards, All star every year he has been in the league, recored tying 11 straight first team all NBA (hopefully 12th this year), one of only a handful of players to win a ring his third year in the league (magic, Bird, Duncan), THREE TIME FINALS MVP, back-to-back regular season MVP (he is in the running every year), should i go on. Bottom line Duncan is a winner, clutch player and classy.

Now I really like the Suns and Nash, etc..., its just that they cannot beat the Spurs this year. You guys were better last year. Shaw is too slow for Timmy and everyone know we can run with the best of them. Phoenix has not proven that they can win under pressure, because of Amare. If your coach was smart, I would pull him off the floor the final minutes, cause you know bowen or Horry is going to bait him into doing something dumb, history has proven. Is it right or wrong, who knows, but I know you guys would love to have Bowen The Enforcer on your team. Defense wins championships, period. So Suns fans get ready to be disapointed again.

by bigdog2000 on Apr 18, 2008 5:33 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

A moment about General Policy on this Board.

We do not encourage corrections to grammer, spelling, diction or syntax.  We don't even care that grammar and syntax are probably synonyms.

Anyone that can't figure out Shaw=Shaq and  whatever you said=AWARDS is a giant douche.

The one that wants to jump all up and down at your stupid mistakes rather than address the meat of your arguments is a turd sandwich.

We do encourage clever zingers and clean, cruel insults, however.

If I were to bother properly editing my comments, I would never post in between working.

by bigdog2000 on Apr 18, 2008 5:34 PM MDT   0 recs

I hold Tim Duncan in the highest esteem.. really.
One of my top 10 favorite players of all time.

I'd point out that the difference in record, this season, between the Suns and the Spurs is but one game, and furthermore, let be also suggest that had the Suns not traded for Shaq, while they led the west, we'd very likely have won the conference, seeing that the difference between ourselves and the Lakers is a slim two games.

However, if you're suggesting that just because he has never exited the playoffs in the first round, he won't this year, then that's just nonsense.  He has never faced a team this good, this early.

We beat you guys, badly, just over a week ago, in a game that both teams took seriously.  I'd say that carries a lot of weight, even accounting for the fact that y'all are the current NBA champs.

Let me get Biblical on you. Proverbs 16:18: "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

by Pliny the Elder on Apr 18, 2008 5:47 PM MDT   0 recs

Good thing i am an Aethist
Ok i am not, the West is loaded, but...I still give the edge to the guys who have proven themselves time and time again. The spurs winning the Champions ship is a given, like Pres Bush saying something stupid, its just a given, haha...Its gonna be a great series!!!

LOL

You know, it's hard to get a read about a team that hangs out on the ropes like SA is doing.

They could be done.  They could be rope-a-dope.

I don't think anyone knows, even with a crack pipe and running around naked in the dark.

Actually we have...
in the 1999-2000 season first round.
We beat the Spurs.

Don't leave out the important detail
That was the Spurs without TD. Otherwise the Suns lose big time. :-)

I'm a "nowist"

Only this year matters.  The rest is bullshit.

99-2000
Yea but the Suns did not win it all.... The peak came back in 90 something when you guys had Barkley. I remember watchin as he shot it over The Admiral, San Antonio endured year of pain under the Jazz, but the Jazz never won it all either. Hmm, we will see Suns fans but stop making excuses, Amares dumb ass rushed the floor a rule is a rule, no excuses if you lost you lost, if you win you win. Wouldves couldves shouldves, blah, blah blah....

I was just correcting a statement of fact you made
Actually, what bothers me is not Amare's & Boris' suspensions, (as you say rules are rules) but the fact that Timmy & Bruce didn't get the same treatment; the fact that Bowen didn't get suspended for kneeing Steve in the nuts, or for trying to cut Amare's legs from underneath him.

Every single judgement call that was made by Stern and Jackson went in the Spurs favor.  That's what pisses me off.

But you're right, there are no excuses, and that's why we have Shaq.  It's my opinion, and recent events would seem to support my claim, that the Suns are now demonstrably better than the Spurs, head to head.

Starting tomorrow, we'll know for sure.

Mistake, Duncan has 10 straight first team all NBA
I have to correct myself, Duncan has 10 straight all NBA first team selections. This year will be his 11th straight tied with Bird, I think. I get confused sometimes with so many first team selections. Bird and the Celtics never won back-to-back, but they are considered one of the best teams. Yea better competition is your argument, what are the Suns not that good?

by bigdog2000 on Apr 18, 2008 8:14 PM MDT   0 recs

okay we know timmy is good
its just the old people they surround him with. I know for a fact I bet you wished horry retired (and maybe other old veterans) and got some cap room to pair timmy up with someone dependable (horry, finley, man they just can't do it anymore. spurs fans know it, they would be better favorites if these guys left and let you guys get the room for some youngins) Cause of this fact I actually think his all nba powers won't be enough this time. Suns actually have your number, but that three some of your is to good to count out. I'm just saying if I was a spurs fan I'd be more worried then I've been in the last half a decade
(laker fan out)
