Coach D is Not a Bad Coach, But He's Not a Good Head Coach

It hit me like a ton of bricks today.  Not all great players are great teachers (file under "Jordan, Michael" or, sadly as of right now, "Gretzky, Wayne").  There is a difference between coaching and leadership.

Just because you know the minutia, doesn't mean you have the best judgment.

Case in point, Dan Majerle .  I can't get enough of those photos.

Well, anyway, there are two types of smarts: theory and application.  Kind of like physics and engineering.  Coach D is probably more physicist than engineer.

Here are my thoughts and expanded two cents' worth.

I was trying to link to photos and figure out that "fanshots" thing, but I'm having issues.  Server issues, maybe.  I don't know.  I'll fiddle around with it long enough and figure it out eventually.

Yeah he has flaws.

Problem is the only two clearly better coaches, Phil Jackson and Greg Popovich, are under contract somewhere else.

We’re stuck with his and the rest of the team’s foibles.

Harsh Coaching Criticism coming in from Bordow:

I definitely have some opinions here as well, but I save them for the end of the season.

Larry Brown wants to coach again.

I wonder what Robert Sarver’s right hand man, Steve Kerr, thinks about this…

Interesting Article

Scott Bordow does make some interesting points, especially regarding traps or double teams – I realise as a unit the double team is what killed the Suns vs Spurs last season when they went to Duncan, but I thought we might have seen it more in game 3 on Parker, just to shake him up – I guess that’s a credit to the other 4 Spurs on the court, but talk of D’Antoni getting the axe, is that really true?

If not Mike D, then whom?

Larry Brown? Hubie Brown? Rick Carlisle?

This is a unique group of players, and I’m not sure that any person can just come in, and coach this team to a title. Moreover, it’s clear, with so many fragile veterans, that a Pat Riley style practice regime just isn’t going to work with this group of players.

However, whomever takes over the reins of this team needs to instill a little of Steve Nash’s will to win in the rest of the team, especially Amare. In fact, I’m thinking that Amare needs to get Karl Malone’s phone number from Shaq, work his ass off this summer, put on 15 lbs of muscle and learn how to be a lot more hard-assed on court. That also goes for Boris and Brian.
