Holding on to Optimism

Coming back from being down 0-3 has never been done in the NBA, we all know that, but it's going to happen eventually, and when you think about it, the Suns would be the kind of team to do it. Usually when teams go down 0-3 it's because they are completely overmatched and the other team is unquestionably far superior. But we know the Suns can beat the Spurs, we've seen them do it four times this season. I'm not saying they are going to come back and win the series, but I am saying if any team could do it, it would be a team like this. So don't lose faith just yet.

Lets talk hope

on Wednesday morning.

But for now, doubting the Spurs to close out game 5 at home? Not this time. Been down this road too many times to believe in miracles.

I hear you and fully understand…believe me, but, the way I see it, if our team is going to win, or have a good shot at winning on Tuesday, they need to think it, and believe in it. With that idea in mind, I’m following along with optimism that we can win on Tuesday. Coming back and winning the next 3 is another thing, but I’ll settle for the next game and just deal with that. If there was a team with the talent to be able to do it, it’s us. That’s the beauty of this year, it’s not last year or any other and to be thinking about our failures in the past (unless it motivates us to do better and believe in ourselves) is only self defeating.

Right now though, I’m not even thinking of Tuesday yet, I’m still feeling good about the win today!

I'm cautious but..

If there’s any team that can do it.. it’s us. We came back from 3-1 vs the Lakers two years ago. We are down 3-1 right now. Granted the Spurs are obviously a MUCH better team, but we can win in San Antonio. If we win Tuesday.. we’ll come back to play a game that we should win in Phx and hopefully take it to game 7. Who knows?

One game at a time indeed

It sure is one at a time. I loved the way they beat the Spurs in Gm 4 , taking the score right out, playing hard on the defensive end, getting stops and dominating with the ball. Defense really is the key, that and scoring the way we did last night.

We can do it yes, But…...

One game at a time…....

Reasons to think the Suns can do it

I must qualify my comments. I was as disgusted as the rest of you with the stinker the Suns laid down Friday. I admit it right now, and open myself up to fair weather fandom accusations, I did not watch yesterday’s game. I was ready for baseball season, and the NFL draft. I wasn’t going to come back to BSoS until the NBA draft. I remember a series , I believe it was 1984, where the Lakers led the Suns, 3-0. I went to game 4, and was treated to fools gold, as the Suns walloped the mighty Lakers in game 4 at Vets Memorial. It was a bittersweet moment for me, as I not only was treated to an inconsequential speed bump on the Laker road to the finals that year, but I attended the game with a Laker fan friend from work, and I couldn’t be too celebratory, since he was there to point out that LA had a 3-1 lead, and were cruising.

However, this series is a little different. In 1984, the Suns were clearly inferior to the Showtime Lakers. This year, the Suns have more talent, and have beaten the Spurs 4 times. The problem in this series has to do with heart and the willingness of the Spurs players and coaches to pull out all the stops. There is no doubt in my mind that if the Suns pulled out all the stops, they would get past San Antonio. The problem is, this team rarely has pulled out all the stops. And therein lies my cause for optimism.

Phoenix beat the Spurs by 19. Even in San Antonio’s blowout, the margin was only 16. The Suns did it with an ineffective Amare Stoudemire, and a largely ineffective Steve Nash (4 assists). Of course Boris was fantastic. I did catch snippetts of the game on ESPN radio here in Dallas, and I heard Jim Durham mention that Boris’ playoff career high was 34 pointss. I had almost forgotten how he almost singlehandedly carried the injury-depleted Suns to victory against the Mavs in 2006. Remember how unstoppable he was against the smaller defender Josh Howard? Now if we can just get Amarre untracked. I think a frontline of Shaq-Amare-Boris can destroy the Spurs.

Is it too late? I don’t know. This is a game of adjustments, and you can bet Popovich will pul out all the stops in game 5. I can tell you this. Regardless of what Duncan says in the newspaper, the Spurs are pissed. And embarrassed. They are also concerned, becausse they know that the Suns can trounce them if they are clicking on all cylinders. Remember, the last three quarters were even on Friday. I look at it this way. Instead of thinking, ‘we are down 3-1, no team has come back from 3-0, blah, blah’, I prefer to think of it as a third time’s the charm kind of thing. We get another chance to win in SA.

This time, let’s do it right, and bring the series back to Phoenix. Let’s at least give the fans another game to go to. Right now, I’d be ecstaticwith a 7th game.

Right On!

You blog way too much to be considered fairweather! How people grieve is different, and sometimes the ones that feel it the most are the ones who have to step away from it for a little while.

Great post Hawk.

Let's do it

Thanks, ZF. I’ll watch game 5 and expect the boys to be ready. The 1st q has been the decider (a Bush-ism?) for the last two games. we must come out strong.

Stan just told me – but your wisdom got picked up by Yahoo’s Ball Don’t Lie:
