Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Optimism...

I admire the optimism from Suns fans, I really do. I’m not trying to be Buzz Killington but it needs to be mentioned that the Suns have no idea what Pop has in store for them. I can't fathom how the Suns would go about winning the next 3 games. This series, just like every series, is a chess match. Pop has methodically played this game in his head over and over again. Move by move, he has scripted out how this battle needs to be fought and won. He knows exactly what D’Antoni is going to do before Coach D even dreams it up. He studies his opponents in victory and defeat, finding ways to exploit their weaknesses and limit their strengths. He leads a group that has forged 4 championships by pounding the rock.

For those of you who have visited PTR but never quite understood the significance of the title, allow me to enlighten you. Hung in the entryway to the Spurs locker room is a quote. A quote that is written in English but also translated in Spanish, French and Slovenian. It serves as a reminder to every player who walks into the Spurs locker room and dons the silver and black uniform. It reminds them of our entire philosophy that is ingrained into every facet of the Spurs organization. It's what "makes us tick"; it’s our mantra.

"When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before." — Jacob Riis

This is the drumbeat that the San Antonio Spurs march to. A beat that bears no resemblance to the cadence of a drum corps, leading troops to battle. Instead, it’s the harsh and rudimentary sound that is made when iron meets stone. If you’re not familiar with this sound, the best comparison I can offer you is the sound that can be heard after Shaq shoots a free throw.

I will be the first person to profess that the Suns possess the talent to win a championship. But, as the Dallas Mavericks can attest to, talent alone does not win championships. The cancer within the Mavericks organization is their lack of heart and fragile psyche. However, this is not the case with your beloved Suns. The Suns posses the heart and determination, I will not deny that. The impeding force on this team is not a lack of talent, or an unwillingness to change. It’s simply, Mike D’Antoni. He is far and away being out coached in this series. Kerr knows it. We know it. He knows it.

Now who knows, Coach D could do the impossible and win this series in 7. He just might be pulling off the biggest rope-a-dope in sports history. Spurs nation could be in for the biggest let down just south of Dallas. But I will leave you with this little stat line. In the past 5 years, the Spurs are 14-2 in playoff series and have amassed a record of 64-30. The argument can easily be made that without Derrick Fisher's .04 shot in 04 and without Manu’s infamous foul in game 7 in 06, this team could very well have won 5 championships in a row. Shhhhhh!….. listen!….. out in the distance.... do you hear that? Clang. Clang. Clang…

Nice work

Yeah I gotta agree the Spurs mentality and robot-like precision have won them quite a few series. And as much as I want to truly believe that the Suns can pull out a game 5 win, i’m afraid that the Spurs are gonna play their game and win. It kills me to say that and I do still have an undying hatred toward the Spurs, but the cards are really and truly stacked against the Suns. I had so hoped for revenge this year, but it looks like we’ll just have to wait.

Well if the Suns want to prove me wrong they have got to want it enough and have got to play with their heads. They’ve been in dire straits before against the Lakers, but this test shall be far more daunting. GO SUNS!!!

Thanks a pantload.

I think most of Planet Orange is looking forward to Game 5 with the same anticipation they have towards purchasing a lottery ticket. Big payoff, long odds.

But thanks for explaining the blog title. I was just wondering about that today as a matter of fact.

Thanks CMoney -

I think the PTR story is a good one. Winners consistently come out to play, losers wait until the last possible minute to perform.

Still boring

still as boring as hammering a rock 100 times….I don’t watch 82 games a year to win. I watch to be entertained. I guess the hope is that a team can do both. Its certainly been done before – just not in SA. Although I have to admit Parker and Ginobili can be entertaining at times. Still, their style of basketball bores me to tears. No passing and ball movement and an offense that relies on 3 players carrying 80% of the load.

I do have more and more appreciation for the Spurs defense though. That’s where the team aspect really comes into play for them and when you really study it it is somewhat amazing how well they cover and help and their committment to team play on that end.

Guess I'm being Censored Now...

I had originally posted a reply that is no longer here. Guess it was deleted. So let me paraphrase.

Nice Try…

“Still, their style of basketball bores me to tears. No passing and ball movement and an offense that relies on 3 players carrying 80% of the load.”

Obviously, you’ve never actually watched a Spurs game because if you had, you would see how ignorant and foolish this sounds. We are not the Denver Nuggets. Spurs basketball is all about team basketball. Pop’s entire system revolves around spreading the ball around and making the right pass at the right time. We are one of the most unselfish teams in basketball. Our system requires players to swallow their egos and play for the betterment of the team. Thus why Tim Duncan left 10 million dollars on the table during contract negotiations, so the Spurs could use that money to sign good role players. Hell even Manu, arguably one of our best players, comes off the bench. Your quote reveals more about your lack of Spurs basketball knowledge than an accurate account of Spurs basketball. You want to see entertainment, go watch And1 basketball. You want to see championship basketball… watch the Spurs. But I will add that there is nothing more entertaining that seeing my team lift the Larry O’Brien trophy

You are absolutely correct

I have never watched the Spurs play. I didn’t see games 1 and 2 (the one’s that reportedly weren’t blow outs) when the Spurs big three combined for 77% of the Spurs scoring. Or so I read. I don’t really know. I have never seen them play. Are they any good?

No you're right...

I never argued the fact that our Big 3 account for 75% of our scoring. It does get boring… having the same “boring” 3 guys, night in and night out, give you 20 points a game…. each. I mean seriously, wasn’t it a drag when Jordan would average 35 points and Pippen would average 20 points a game in the “glory days”?! Who in their right mind would be entertained by watching MVPs and All Stars dominate the game?! Boooooring! That’s why we all love watching the T Pups and the Bucks play.

What I did call you out on is the fact that you say we don’t pass when in reality, we pass all the time.

You clearly haven't watched

a team that really moves the ball well…The Spurs pass the ball well out of the post when Duncan is double teamed.

The Spurs don’t cut and move like the Lakers or Jazz or the Suns (when they are playing well).

and tell me you didn’t just compared Parker and Manu to MJ

by Phoenix Stan on Apr 29, 2008 3:36 PM MDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Way to take what I'm saying out of context there.

First of all, I never compared Manu and Parker to MJ. I was making a comparison relative to their teams and how they score a majority of the points for their respective teams.

“The Spurs don’t cut and move like the Lakers or Jazz or the Suns (when they are playing well).”

Wow…. I can’t see how you can say that and not feel embarrassed. You’re talking about a 4 time championship basketball team and you are making them sound like the Denver Nuggets. If we don’t pass well, we don’t win championships. Simple as that.

2007-08 Stats….

Spurs average 95 pts per game and average 21 assists per game

Suns average 110 pts per game and average 26 assists per game

Jazz average 106 pts per game and average 26 assists per game

Lakers average 109 pts per game and average 24 assists per game

Seeing how the Spurs average 10+ points less than these teams, its understandable that we have an average of 5 fewer assists per game. But to say that we don’t pass well is ludicrous.
