Open Letter to Suns Fans

AusTechSpur of Pounding the Rock has penned a very complimentary and respectful hat tip to Suns fans and Bright Side of the Sun on their site.  It is pretty much the definition of "winning gracefully" and a class act.  It's sort of like the old days (which, really, truly must have kicked ass) when guys go to a bar and get into a fight and no one really got hurt and then one guy would buy the other a beer.  Except it's cooler.  You would be remiss not to check it out.

So,  check it out already.

Good thing you

guys are around to show some class….I am a full fledge ass hole when it comes to dealing w/ these guys…who occasionally have insightful things to say and often are just insulting idiots

Personally, I am still in no mode to shake hands and play nice. As Texans (and Serbs) well know, getting your ass kicked repeatedly only make you tougher and meaner.

by Phoenix Stan on May 1, 2008 8:58 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

somewhat in our defense

Yeah, we can often be insulting idiots. I couldn’t even play the devil’s advocate on that one.

But you guys also have to understand that your team attracted the worst kind of bandwagon fans. All the “Suns fans” we run into here in Texas are bandwagon fans (I know TexSun, not all). A great many people became Suns fans because they are fun to watch, because Steve Nash is a brilliant passer in the open court, because Steve Nash is white, and some women find him attractive. I think all of those factors combined to make the Suns a “super bandwagon team”. (Yes, I’m quoting nobody)

I couldn’t go to a party without running into somebody who has thought that the Suns were a FAR better team than the Spurs and that the Spurs were dirty, boring, cheaters. Every - single - one—has been a whiner and excuse maker. Not one of those fans saw any value in all the real things you have to do to win a basketball game. Like box out, set picks, play defense, maintain your composure, not turn the ball over, have good shot selection, etc.

When that is your consistent feedback, it becomes very easy to stereotype in negative way.

Fair enough

and being an obnoxious homer is also just part of the fun…

Although I have to question that women find Steve Nash attractive.

I wonder what that says about the men in Texas???

by Phoenix Stan on May 1, 2008 11:20 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, that was a tough sell

My wife thinks he’s really ugly. But, I’ve also known women that like him.

Guilty

You’re giving me far too much credit, AusTechSpur. I’m a self-confessed bandwagoner, and everything you said about Nash and why people you know became Suns fans applies to me except for your last two points (I’d like to think that physical attractiveness and race do not factor into whether or not I like watching a guy play basketball-and even if it did, I can think of at least a dozen players off the top of my head that I find more attractive in the purely physical sense than Nash, including other Suns). In fact, I accept that I can never be considered a "true Suns fan" because I didn’t grow up watching this team (or any other). And I don’t get to lose the "bandwagon" label until I’ve made it through at least a couple of different "eras" including a losing one. It’s part of why I decided to step down as administrator of this site-I felt I was doing a disservice to the real Suns fans by trying to run this thing from 1000 miles away and not being able to relate to those who have bled purple and orange since birth.

So were you a Dallas fan when Steve was there ?

I’m in the same boat, I guess.

I’ve been a big Steve Nash fan since Santa Clara days, because of his unique game, and because to me he’s the closest to a truly good Brit player (John Amaechi et al, notwithstanding). So I’ve followed him around, to Dallas and back.

But I really fell in love with this team during the Amare-less year, because that group showed so much mental toughness, spirit and team play, played joyful basketball, and everybody on that team stepped up. Big time.

When I first came to this country, I was working in Waltham, Mass, just down the road from Brandeis, where the Celtics train. I’m a big fan of the 60’s Celtics teams, as well as the 80’s teams, but once I met Antoine Walker and Chris Ford (in a sandwich joint near work), and also figured out that most Bostonians are just plain jerks, in all honesty I couldn’t summon the enthusiasm to really cheer for them, even though they should have been my team.

The only exception to that was when they played the Lakers. For some reason I hate the Lakers, and I wanted the C’s to marmalise them so badly, I could taste it. It was almost like being back in England as a kid and rooting for Chelsea against Arsenal.

You’re a fan of the wrong team in football as well! :-)

Not in the 70's I wasn't..

The early 70’s Chelsea team with Ossie, The Cat, Charlie, Hutch, Hollins and Chopper was a great team.

and Alan Hudson also played for that Chelsea team.

I didn't mean

‘wrong’ in the sense that Chelsea isn’t good, but only in the sense that I am an Arsenal fan [or better said, my son is Arsenal mad and therefore I’ve become a fan as well]. But I sure hope that Chelsea defeats ManU in the upcoming BIG GAME!

by 4Him on May 1, 2008 3:40 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know what you mean't and didn't take offense..

but I just had to say something.

I might hate Arsenal more than I hate the Lakers or Luton (who are being relegated this year.. booyah!)

Not exactly

I watched my first NBA game in nearly 15 years (at the time) during the 2003 playoffs when I saw the Mavericks without Dirk (and their starting center Shawn “Poster Me” Bradley) down the Spurs in SA to extend their season one more day. The hustle of guys like Nash, Nick Van Exel, Eduardo Najera, etc. during that game inspired me to watch them some the next season. I would say I was more a fan of Nash and a couple of other players on the team (not named Dirk) more so than of the team itself, plus they were local so they were a convenient place to start. But I’m not from Dallas originally, so I have no loyalty to that franchise whatsoever. Once most of the players I liked on that team got sent away that summer, there was no more reason for me to care about the Mavs. I wasn’t even planning on watching the NBA at all anymore until I went for “one last game” at the AAC to see Nash’s return to Dallas in November 2004. I got hooked instantly, signed up for League Pass about a month later, and have rarely missed a game since.

I know that makes me sounds like the worst kind of bandwagon fan, but you’ve gotta understand until the 2004-05 Suns came along, the closest I’d ever been to being a serious NBA fan was watching the 1986 Celtics win the championship way back when I was an aspiring young (and very bad) power forward/center in high school. This four-year stint of watching the Suns is by far the longest amount of time I’ve ever followed a sports team. It’s just not something I grew up with, and following a team through what looks to be a regime change is definitely going to be new territory for me.

Now, for the one or two people who are still willing to read what I have to say after that little “confession”, I wholeheartedly agree about the 2005-06 season. That was my favorite sports team period, and yes I include the champion Celtics in that.

by TexSUN on May 1, 2008 3:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

The Nash/Van Exel backcourt..

might have been the best offensive 1 & 2 combo I’d ever seen. two world class passers & shooters, and near telepathic interplay.

I was gutted when that team was broken up for Walker and Jameson, in panic to the Laker’s Malone/Payton acquisition.

Understandable

I’ve told this story before, because I understand the hatred of bandwagon fans. The Red Sox. My college roommate’s wife saw that damned Drew Barrymore movie and became a Red Sox fans. She bought all the crap and everything. He - a long-time Phoenician and Suns’ fan - had to skip a Suns game to which I had 8th row seats to sit in a bar and watch a Patriots playoff game in a Tom Brady jersey. All because of the that stupid movie!

I came to the realization of why the Suns bandwagon fans are hated after reading the boards after the Shaq trade and wrote about it here.

Unfortunately, all Suns’ fans with legitimate complaints began lumped into the group of ESPN-watching, video-game playing bandwagoners who could not understand how, on God’s green earth, the Suns could possibly lose a game outside of a conspiracy or legally blind officials.

Here is what I put in another post on this site (un-edited):

Most of the "whining" from last year was arguably justified. You cannot honestly say that the complaints about the suspensions, the knee to the groin and the kick to the achilles fit into the category of "whining losers." While you may argue about the sanctions (or lack thereof), that does not fit into the category of "ticky-tack" whining. That fits into the category of justifiable (even if misplaced) anger.

Notably, going into last year’s series, most fans were upset that the Suns players respected the San Antonio players too much. There was a perception of too much reverence, not enough disprect for the opponent. Before that, the rivalry was at a relatively low temperature. Suns had beaten the Spurs a few times in the decade before and the Spurs were getting the best of the last few years. That was all.

There was a combination of "new" Suns fans that couldn’t ever understand how the Suns could possibly lose and those who felt wronged by the turn of events of last year (see above). The former category is despicable. The latter category deserved to be heard. Unfortunately, all complaints have been unjustifiably categorized under the former.

Maybe it doesn’t always show up in my posts here, but while blogging at my other site, I have more than once explained how must I respect the Spurs (and hate that they’re so damnded good). Again, though, outrage over the suspensions is (be honest) more than debatable, and that should not get mixed up with teenagers who watch too much ESPN.

Yeah, and when all Phx Stan (and others) see are ad hominem attacks and the lack of a vocabulary (i.e., a four-letter word is the only adjective ever used), then the negative feedback loop can lead one to believe that all most Sp*rs fans (I will continue to use the asterisk, thank you) are thick-headed, blow-hards who sit in their mothers’ basements filled with anger and rage, so blinded that they are unable to carry on an intelligent discussion.

Except CMoney, he’s not so dumb. ;)

We shall serve no hate before it's time

A good hate takes a while to build, like a pot of stew coming up to a slow boil. The ‘03 knockout barely registers, that was a garden variety case of an inferior team making a couple of miracle shots combined with the not-yet champion Spurs taking the first round a little lightly.

Looking back ‘05 there’s a sense of “what-if” regarding Joe Johnson, but realistically his availability really would’ve just upgraded the Suns chances from “none” to “unlikely”.

The Spurs didn’t end the ‘06 season (maybe the best of the current era), but that was a magical run, and the Mavs sure aren’t the Spurs—the Suns had a real shot there and the Bell injury effectively killed it.

Pile all the regular season losses on top of that and last year was really the most bitter pill Suns fans have had to swallow. I’m not going to drag all that back out, but Amare said it himself during the offseason: this year was the revenge tour.

We wanted a shot at the Spurs, and we got it, and now we’re blogging about next year while the hated ones prep for the Hornets, and make no mistake, Spurs fan, your team has done a mighty thing. In just a few short years they have earned a level of hate from this fan base that has been reserved only for the Lakers. Enjoy that hate Spurs fan, it is a sign of respect. Nobody hates the Bobcats.

by SoCalSun on May 1, 2008 2:53 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually, that's a good point

I certainly don’t hate the Bobcats. It’s all Lakers, and in the 90’s there was definitely a smoldering bit of hatred for the Thug Knicks teams, too.

Question

Do you think that with the style of play now as opposed to the last few seasons with Shawn Marion, that the Suns are less likely to attract those “bandwagoners”/new fans because of their current style of play?

by dang on May 1, 2008 3:22 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

If D'Antoni stays, the Suns aren't going to slow down that much

All those “bandwagon” fans showed up primarily during the 04-05 season, and they were drawn in by the explosive scoring binges, huge margins of victory, and several lengthy winning streaks. That team had already gone away as Q was traded for KT, then JJ left, and finally as James Jones was replaced with Grant Hill.

Marion for Shaq really killed the 3-ball based offense, so the Suns for sure need to add another long-range bomber this summer. On the other hand, the overall scoring did go up after Shaq arrived (probably due to more possessions as a result of giving up fewer offensive rebounds, I would guess), and if D’Antoni stays, rest assured he will figure out a way to goose the offense and fit it in around Shaq and what looks like Boris’ new role as the starting SF.

by SoCalSun on May 1, 2008 4:02 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

I think the Run and Gun is done. As long as Shaq is playing 25-30 min its over. The Suns might run sometimes but all teams do. Diaw is not fast enough to run the break and Bell is well…not good in the open court. That leaves LB and Hill. And we what Grant is over the….and I think LB might be gone. Not to mention Nash’s decline.

Nope – the run and fun left the they pulled the trigger on the Trade.

The debate now is how you tweak the roster to compliment Shaq and Amare. The answer my friends is sitting crazy in Sactown hiding from snake eggs. LB for Artest….that’s the deal we need to happen.

Artest

That actually might work. Shaq would keep him in line. I don’t like the guy, but he’s the only one on the Queens I would want. remember that game where they all quit, and Artest almost brought them back by imself?

April 29, 2008 Total Eclipse of the Sun. Is the sky falling?

by Hawk42 on May 2, 2008 7:58 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Artest

You keep hearing from guys that played with him like Jalen Rose and Reggie Miller that he’s actually a great team mate. Its his off the court stuff and you know – I don’t really give a shit about that.

The deal would have to be right of course and NOT long term.

by Phoenix Stan on May 2, 2008 8:57 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

James Posey

He would be the other I’d take from Sactown. He’d be great in the way that D’Antonni runs his players for high minutes. He’s been a productive player when he gets minutes and non-productive when he doesn’t.

by KJ7 on May 2, 2008 11:51 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

LB for Artest! Are you crazy? Crazy like a fox?

Wow, that is a bold and inspired move in the mold of (dare I say it) Shaq for Marion.

I’m intrigued, I assume you’d want to see Hill coming off the bench, along with Diaw.

As for the run-n-gun, yeah, I was trying to say that really hasn’t been seen in full flower since last season at least—even before Shaq got here they weren’t running very much. However, I think they are still going to score more and more efficiently than most of the league as long as Coach D is there.
