Bulls owner speaks out...

He said this about Coach D

"I'm disappointed in him, I don't know what else we could've done. He chose to go to New York knowing there was a good chance we would make him an offer. If he had really wanted to be in Chicago, he would've waited. Instead, he misled us. It's not the end of the world, but it is somewhat rude."

"He said nothing had to be done over the weekend. I also said if this proceeds to where we want to make an offer, we don't deal with coach's agents. He said that's not a problem and that money wasn't the most important thing anyway. He said he wanted a job where he was going to be happiest. He said he didn't want to coach the Knicks."

I guess the Bulls really wanted him, I thought he chose the Knicks because The Bulls were not in the mix anymore. This is a business, Mike was not going to sit around and wait for their offer. The Knicks stepped up to the plate first and that's it.

If you think about it, roster-wise, Chicago seemed more appealing, but you never know what happens behind closed doors.

I still think he is going to have a hard time in NY.

The lure of the Big Apple

I read about how he is going to fix Curry and Randolph. I just don’t see it. I think they are going in knowing next year c9ould be bad, and develop the draft pick. That is one reason why you keep Marbury, for the space. I think it is safe to say the NY fans should brace themselves for some more bad basketball.

For a few million bucks less, D’A could have been coaching Deng, Gordon, Hinrich, and Noah Go out and trade for Kapono, and he could have had a ready made 7SOL.

bulls management

seemed like they did not have as much confidence in D’antoni as the Knicks did.
that said, it will probably take some time in NY for him to have a shot at making any noise in the playoffs. As weak as the east has been, they could sneak in there like Philly did this year.

Safety net

I think D’A made a good move going to NY because they have been absolutely horrid the last few years. They will not get any worse under his watch and any improvement will justify his inflated contract.

Bulls

Reinsdorf isn’t exactly the most reliable source for all this so anything he says should be taken w/ some salt.

I also will speculate that an issue was Paxton wanted the sames things Kerr wanted – defense, rotation, player dev, etc. where as Donnie Walsh is known to not mess w/ his coaches and we say how loyal the owner was to Zeke.

You have to think that those factors make the Knicks the better choice if the Coach doesn’t want to be messed w/ by the GM and owner.

I do think even w/ the current roster the Knicks will improve just by having new blood a coach that actually….you know….coaches.

Sour grapes

Sounds like he’s just bummed that someone bought the last shiny toy off the shelf before he did.

And, I agree, the Knicks, though apparently a bigger mess with an unfriendlier roster, provides a better landing spot in terms of expectations. I think he and Donnie Walsh have big plans for when a certain $20M roster spot opens up…

NYC offered more freedom

D’Antoni will have more say in how to run the show with New York. Paxson would bother him with such pesky things as defensive coaches.

Offense/Defense

Man, stop the other team from scoring. what a concept. Naismith will be rolling over in his grave.

Rick Carlisle, the new Mavs coach, had an interesting line about defense in his press conference. He said it is hard to coach a flowing offense where you get into a groove and let it come (D’Antoni style) and go right tho defense where you coach possessions and treat each possession differently. I wonder if it’s possible to approach defense as a game-long flow.
