Driving a stake into the heart of the Spurs

Seems like the Spurs have been a special thorn in the Suns side. From Horry's flagrant foul to their sweep during Nash's MVP season, the Spurs are like a vampire that just won't die.

As a Laker fan, I'm glad my team is much obliged to put a stake in the heart of these cats. They've been our nemesis to. They've swept us. They closed down the Forum. They've been our adversaries in hard fought playoff battles. We hate them too.

Star-divide

But I couldn't help but think if even the most ardent Suns fans, as much as you hate the Lakers (believe me the feeling is mutual) won't smile a little bit knowing the team that was a few inappropriate suspensions and lucky Tim Duncan three-pointers away from winning didn't relish in the Spurs inevitable defeat. I know I would. If there's anything that depresses me more it is to much the Spurs grab, hold, scratch and claw through the Finals. I'd rather watch someone make sausage.

I could be wrong. Too much hate for Kobe. The Lakers. Phil Jackson. I understand. I'd be conflicted too.

But as enemies on different sides of the war I'd posit we have one thing in common: we hate the Spurs. Isn't there some middle ground in that? Can't we rejoice in their defeat?

Have a good offseason, get a defensive-minded coach, retool and hopefully these two teams can renew our rivalry in the desert next playoff season. Not crappy San Antonio.

One thing that struck me most was how the Spurs handled the no-call. None of them, from the coaches to the players blamed the refs and gave all credit to the Lakers. They took it like men. If it was the Suns you’d just KNOW D’Antoni and Shaq wouldn’t shut up about it.

by Jeffrey on May 28, 2008 7:47 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

interesting theory...

Except for the fact that the Spurs were handed so many whistles and no-calls to keep them in the game that even Phil Jackson mentioned it to Craig Sager in the first quarter interview. I don’t think they have any room to complain.

...Unless they think that TIm Duncan is supposed to walk to the hoop from the top of the key to slam.

Every analyst says that no ref is gonna make that call in the last seconds of the game. I’m sure Pop and all those guys, who are seasoned professionals with years of experience know this, and they also know that whatever no-call in the last seconds, if they were going to win, they would have done it in the previous 47 minutes.

by presbot on May 28, 2008 8:55 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Its common sense

Spurs played like crap all night, they got most of the calls and they know it. If it wasn’t for the shot clock blown call, the game would have been over before the Barry shot. Kobe didn’t go to the line all night… I mean Bowen is a good defender but not THAT good.
They didn’t deserve to win and they know it.

Thanks Lakers, from a life long Suns fan...

Yes, I do enjoy watching the Spurs being handled like baby kittens quite a bit.

I like the killer instinct that the Lakers are displaying right now, I think there’s a good chance they’re taking it all. It’s the same instinct that allows Lebron to will his team farther into the playoffs than is possible, and it’s something I want injected into our team.

Until we meet again, Lakers.

"Killer Instinct"

How does a fan analyze which team has killer instinct?? I always find the label of killer instinct pretty arbitrary. It seems like whichever team’s player’s have the most angry looks on their faces is labeled as having “killer instinct” and thus being better in that sense. I don’t get it or buy it.

by RealTangiblesGuy on May 28, 2008 11:03 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think..

Winning in SA shows you that the Lakers want it more, going after the loose balls and offensive rebounds, second chance points, fast breaks, Kobe screaming “Come on” in Luke Walton’s face. Just the little things…to me that’s what kiler instinct means. Wanting it more.

what goes around, comes around..

Pat Riley once wrote there were only two states of life in the NBA: winning and misery.

While it irritates me that the Lakers are having even a modicum of success, the fact that the Spurs are not getting the important calls they’re used to getting, and that the Lakers are sticking it to them.. well, lets just say I don’t hate the Lakers quite as much today.

You can bet your ass, though, that Spurs fans are going to start claiming conspiracy, with Joe Crawford, etc… And they’d be as right as we are.

The spurs blog (and fans in general) are being quite modest. I’ve gained a whole lot of respect for them after how they reacted to the loss (the players, the coach, and the blog).

Spurs did not do post-game complaints

Rather, I’d seen them complaining almost EVERY CALL during the game. That went from Duncan to Parker.

cookies tossed against computer screen

It makes me toss my cookies to see so many Spurs and Lakers fans post on our blog. Who in the world cares? It is most unfortunate that one of these teams has to win this series.

It is nice to see the spurs in misery, though. Although the joy is short lived when I contemplate the likelihood of the Lakers making the Finals. My one hope is that that there will be no Laker fans posting for a few millenia. Perhaps that is too much to ask. Maybe Joakim Noah and Josh Howard had the right idea…

I was surprised a laker fan started a post in a suns blog about two teams that isn’t the suns. It is an interesting topic for a day though.

Witty comments or deep insight?

I like to think that the Suns’ fans are highly educated and other teams’ fans like to get our perspective.

Either that, or they can’t get over us. Maybe guilt on the Sp*rs side, knowing, deep down, they lost last year. May fear on the Lakers side, knowing that next year … nahhh

your a neutral team that both sides know keeps an eye on our games cause of your guys hatred for both team. So if a spurs fan or a Lakers fan says something about themselves or each other we know all of you will know what were talking about.

No, as long as the spurs are around there a threat. There easily the hardest team to get by for a championship.

There are no winners here

Couldn’t put it any better myself. As the series has progessed I’ve found my hatred for the Lakers is winning out as stringer, but I’m sure not “rooting” for the Spurs. I’m clinging to the idea that the eventual defeat of the Lakers in the finals will put a cherry on this $h!t sundae…bwhahahahahaha

Its this kind of fan that help get the lakers high ratings, watching them while hoping they will fail. Nothing wrong with that, I do that with the celtics.

Those aren't really "Laker ratings"

I’m pumping up the ratings for the Pistons and the Celitcs as well-I pretty much watch every playoff game, and have for years, regardless of who is in it. I have league pass, never miss the Suns, and try to sample as much as I can around the league. One thing I never watch anymore are Lakers local broadcasts, as I find their broadcasts to be shite since Chick Hearn passed, although Big Game James isn’t bad on the pre and post-game for KCAL.

I'd rather see the Spurs win

Cuz if the Lakers win, that makes THEM the team to beat in the west, and I don’t see the Suns winning a playoff series against them any time soon. I’ve got much more confidence in our ability to beat the Spurs in the playoffs…despite the overwhelming evidence of recent history.

Interesting point betcal

I actually feel the same way…I felt we had the Spurs this year…and last year =(

doesn't matter to me.

The Lakers are overachieving this year or, more accurately, teams like the Suns, Mavs and Spurs have underachieved. My gut feeling is that with a pre-season together, the Suns will be far more formidable than they were entering the post-season, and should be able to handle any team out there.

Anyway, the Lakers, right now, are in the middle of a run like the Rockets had during the regular season, where everything is going right for them.

I’m waiting for the wheels to fall off the wagon. Don’t expect to see that soon.

every championship team needs a bit of luck and somehow get there best stuff at the end of the year, luckly its happening for the lakers at the right time of the year.

About time

The league office announced today that the play at the end of the game should have been a two shot foul. I think it about time the Spurs realize what it feels like to get beaten by the officials. However, the shot clock didn’t run out so it was appropriate the foul wasn’t called. But, I think the Lakers would have won anyway because the Spurs were gasping for air.

The great Celtics teams in the past were not hated and they won a lot more championships than the Spurs ever did or ever will. The Tim Duncan era is over and it will be years before they are a force again. Why are the Spurs hated so much? Probably because they win any way they can, even if it means dirty play by Bowen and Horry. And, the sooner they are eliminated, the less we will have to see Eva with a worried look on her face while Tony lies on the floor trying to get a call.

LA will run Boston off the floor in the finals.

by TheTruthSquad on May 28, 2008 8:51 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

so suns fans...

will you rather see LAL vs DET or LAL vs BOS in the finals?

by #1lakerfan on May 28, 2008 10:26 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Celtics

Boston has been my second-favorite team since the 1980s when the Lakers were regularly-trouncing the Suns. That, and Boston is the western-most county of Ireland. Mainly, though, because the enemy (Celtcis) of my enemy (Lakers) is my friend.

I would also like to see Garnett devour Gasol. Not a metaphor. He’s crazy enough to do it.

Lakers over Celtics in six

Seems like the classic is returning. I believe the Lakers will finish off the Celts in L.A. Game 6. Sure Garnett will trash Gasol but then Lakers are not running on Gasoline alone. Here in the southland ‘hybrid technology’ is the catch phrase given that it’s $4.05/gal to refill your tank.

Tim Duncan returns a pair of pants

Suns fans, don’t know if you saw this last week. Pretty funny scenario with Duncan, Horry, and Parker.

No, I can’t rejoice in the Lakers winning. Regardless of what Lakers fans say, they are mirror images of the Spurs. They bear NO resemblance to the Suns. Zilch. The Suns have had 13 legitimate chances to win since 1976 (1976, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1984, 1989, 1990, 1993, 1994, 1995, 2005, 2006 and 2007). They have won ZERO times. The Lakers since 1972 have NINE titles, about to be 10. The Spurs, though they have only been in the NBA since the fall of 1976, have 4 titles. I don’t think a fan of a team that has won 4 times or 9 times can relate to one who has come that close that many times without 1. It exceeds the realistic chances of the Red Sox from 1919-2003 and the Cubs of 1909 to the present, heck even the NHL’s Rangers from 1941 to 2003.
I really wouldn’t wish the type of bitterness and disappointment we’ve felt at being let down SO many times on any other sports fan. But I really can’t rejoice in your moment. Having the Spurs lose won’t wipe away my own disappointment at another closed window. Every dog has its day? I’ve yet to see that proven true.
