Shame on the Utah fans

think it's safe to say that the Utah Jazz have the worst fans. Yes, they may be loud, but to boo Derek Fisher, that's just classless.  They booed him in the regular season, and they booed him again tonight.

Now, I hate the Lakers with a passion as much as any Suns fan, but to boo Derek Fisher is just senseless.  He did what any sane parent would do for their child. I guess in the land of polygamy, with big families, losing a kid or two won't hurt, since you have so many offsprings anyways. I hope this is not the thinking of the people there. I'm sure it's just the Laker jersey, but in this case you gotta be respectful.

Regardless, I hope the Jazz get swept, the people there deserve it. Now, if only we could have them lose in similar fashion as the Suns did the past two years.

P.S. I would also love to see the Spurs and Lakers find lose like that too.

Horrible.

Booing Derek Fisher is totally dumb. He left for reasons outside of his control, more or less. The same thing happens with those dumbass Dallas fans, booing Michael Finley whenever he comes into town – Earth to the people of Dallas Texas, Michael Finley didn’t have a say in being traded…..

D-Fish

I was originally upset about the booing incident myself. But a recent article I’ve read have changed my mind somewhat on the matter. These won’t show up on ESPN since they have apparently decided that their company’s stance on the matter is going to be: “Shame on Jazz Fans!”

First, though, please don’t take this as being “his daughter doesn’t matter.” I hope she gets better and wish kids didn’t have to go through stuff like that. My problem, you’ll notice, has nothing to do with what he did to take care of his daughter.

I read an article off of Truehoop earlier in the week by an LA newspaper saying that D-Fish told the Lakers all of Utah’s plays and player tendencies/weaknesses. The article joked that Lakers fans should expect Derek Fisher to have 6 steals a game because of his familiarities with the team. I don’t know how helpful this would be to the Lakers and I understand that in a 7 game series, this would probably not be the main factor determining the winner. But, in a series expected by most experts to be a close win, this could give the edge to the Lakers on a few plays, which could end up deciding the series. This would be particularly harmful to Utah because it looks like New Orleans is on its way to the WCF and Utah has owned NO all season long. So, Fisher might have made the difference between a second round exit and the first finals appearance in a decade for the Jazz. When a team lets you walk out of your contractual obligation to play for them due to your family’s needs, you do not backstab them by giving a rival team their playbook. That is disgraceful, classless, disgusting. So, if that’s why Utah fans are booing, boo away.

Also, shame on ESPN for their coverage here. Adande wrote another article today about the classless Jazz fans. In situations like this, you have to understand that the crowd coming into the arena each night is different. The crowd that night may or may not have been indicative of how the “average” Jazz fan feels if there is such a thing. Great job not pointing out why some fans are doubting (rightfully or not) Fisher’s motives. Some may have a reasonable doubt but ESPN has made it seem like “Fisher’s daughter had cancer so he had to play for the Lakers. Jazz fans booed him because his daughter had cancer. Salt Lake City is classless.”

It is also worth noting that the average NBA fan’s opinion of Fisher is highly skewed by what they remember of him: that miraculous 0.4 seconds shot and last year’s angel from the sky return from his daughter’s surgery to play in the playoffs. The national audience doesn’t really know what Fisher did during the entire season and most weren’t paying attention to what he did between the first day of the season until that day when he was center stage. It’s likely Fisher wasn’t pulling out miracle after miracle game after game. Fans may just be booing him because of his season-long performance or something else that bothered them. I’m not saying that he did. All I’m saying is I don’t know what he did all season long (except for that game) and most others probably don’t either. And maybe we would hear about it from all the Jazz bloggers if they didn’t have to work so hard right now to defend the integrity of their fans under attack by ESPN, which is, once again, looking for the easy storyline than actually practicing journalism.

Fisher

I never have liked Fsher, he fouls too much. I think they finally called him right yesterday when he fouled out. I never understood why a pampeered million dollar athlete couldn’t take care of his family with his current working arrangement. Hey, I know people who make it with far greater hardship.

WCS Game 4

The few plays thing I mentioned in the above post came to life yesterday. Fisher got hot late in the fourth and nailed 3 3’s and a technical free throw and almost won the game for the Lakers. Overtime would not have been a possibility without him. The Laker’s Farmar has apparently forgotten that he can play in any city and not just LA so Fisher has been instrumental. But, how upset would some be if he had hit the game winner?

Jazz fan here...

Now, I’m not going to try and defend all Jazz fans. I’m pretty sure some of them did boo Fisher thinking that he did use his daughter to get out. Every fanbase has the type of fans that other fanbases call classless and that the rest of that teams fanbase don’t want to be associated by. We know Utah has them… the guys that uttered racial slurs or whatever to the Warriors (which was enough to turn all of GSoM against the entire fanbase), and then the guys that threw stuff at Bruce Bowen, and now booing Fish… yeah.

I’ll admit, I found Fisher’s departure highly suspicious. The timing… how quickly he had a new team… and more. But even then, Fisher held a conference telling us all why he was doing it. There is no real reason to think he’s a liar unless something else comes out. So booing him for trying to take care of his daughter is indeed heartless & classless.

Here’s the thing though… that’s not why all of us booed him (I actually didn’t boo… I missed the game, but I would’ve booed after the introductions, where I would have at least applauded Fisher the person). The reason he got booed is because he was on the opposing team… the Lakers of all teams. The same team Karl Malone defected too. Malone got booed too. As did Raja Bell. And Gordan Giricek (surprising… he really did very little with the Jazz). The Jazz fans cheer for the Jazz, and boo everyone else. Like most other fans.

Fisher the Jazz… let’s not get into that. Save for some veteran leadership that he brought (according to ESPN at least) and the huge shot in the playoffs, his tenure was sub-par. His outside shooting (what he was brought in for) was bad. He started at the 2-guard, which resulted in many 2-guards going off on our 6’2 “2-guard”. It was frustrating… I don’t think that the blame falls fully on Fisher though. I mean, we have a coach stupid enough to think that he can stop someone like Kobe or T-Mac or whatnot.

Most of us (I’d assume) weren’t booing Fisher the person or Fisher the father or even Fisher the Jazz-ster with a bad season. We were booing Fisher the Laker. Plain and simple, he’s playing for a hated team. He left after 1 season here and joined one of the few teams that Jazz fans hate with undying passion (reason unknown).

Brad Rock of the Deseret News did try to figure out why we hate the Lakers, and came up with this. Included in that is this quote that pretty much sums it up…

Still, it may not be personal. They also booed Karl Malone’s return as a Laker, despite 18 seasons in Utah; booed Gordan Giricek and Raja Bell upon their returns, too.

In Utah, it’s pretty easy to differentiate the good guys from the bad. The good guys are wearing Jazz blue. Everyone else is a cockroach.

That’s truly what it is. The people that booed Fisher the person, the father… they exist, yes. That doesn’t mean all Jazz fans are the same. Most of us have no desire to be included in the same group. But what can you do? Someone (ESPN) latches onto a story, and all of a sudden all Jazz fans are classless idiots that put sports above everything else. Not true.

None of us (bloggers, at least) have ever advocated booing Fisher the person. But Fisher the Laker… we all hate him. Just like we hate Kobe. And Phil Jackson. And all Lakers. Some just get louder boos (Kobe, Fisher) than others (Luke Walton, for example), because seriously… what has Luke Walton ever done to the Jazz?

Will people think I’m just being stupid? Probably. But I still firmly believe that Jazz fans (in general) are getting a bad rap because of a couple of idiots. Will people continue to judge is in that way? Probably. Is it right, or even fair to the fans who cheered Fisher at the introduction or those that just booed Fisher the Laker? Nope. Not close.

Btw - you don't need

to explain hating the Lakers to anyone in Phx or any Suns fan anywhere for that matter.

I still think a border fence on the Colorado to keep out Lakers fans is one of my better ideas that I haven’t been able to get off the ground. Yet.

Good stuff man.

That’s a great explanation.

He's a Laker!

The Jazz booed every Laker, why should Fish not get the same treatment?

The Jazz fans booed freaking Karl Malone when he returned to Salt Lake as a Laker.

Yeesh, what are you, Hillary Clinton?

oh man..

That’s horrible…

Some people...

don’t fit into my “booing Fisher the Laker” group.
This guy seems to be one of them (aka, he is one of the classless dudes that makes Jazz fans look classless).

As for the rest of the people though… obviously you boo.
You don’t want him to make the technical FT.

I have a good buddy who’s a Jazz fan and here’s the way I see this.
You know how annoyed we feel over the Lakers getting Gasol for peanuts (and don’t tell me how good those other guys will be LATER; in the short run, Gasol was a steal)? The Jazz lost a nice piece through their benevolence and an archrival GAINED a piece because they did it.
Without Gasol AND Fisher would the Lakers be in the WCS? Highly doubtful. Given that, the Suns probably win the Pacific, probably get someone else other than SA, quite possibly get Houston and a first-round win. Then who knows? D’Antoni might still be here, etc.
They boo the player, but also the reality that the situations would NEVER have been reversed. The Suns virtually never get a gift trade like Gasol and no one’s ever gonna be allowed to leave the Lakers then go to the Jazz as a gift. The Lakers, with their legacy of success, need no such favors. The title-less teams like the Suns, Jazz, Mavs, etc. certainly do.
So it’s a bit of the uniform, a bit of frustration and envy and certainly a questioning of the motive.
IMHO the Jazz have very good fans, like the Suns. We still have the best ones IMHO, but the polygamy thing is so overdone by now as to be boring. Give it up. And I’ll boo anyone who ever wears a Laker uniform, thank you.

A lot

of the booing was classless. So are the polygamy comments.

The first game...

a lot of it was most likely classless. But not all of it.
Since then, most of it hasn’t been booing Fisher the person. Obviously, some of it has.
As in the picture above.

Ho hum...

What do expect from a classless league with a classless commissioner, dozens of classless players, a few classless coaches, classless referees, classless players who get defensive player of the year, classless MVPs who rape people, classless coaches who slow the game to a crawl, et cetera?

Point being, it is easy to name call. What’s hard is to rise above it. Lets face it, these are just fans. Fans boo. what’s the big deal? We never know all the facts. What’s wrong, did your team get eliminated early again? (I know, it hurts).

No Excuses

Face it, what the Utah fans are doing it utterly despicable. The first time I heard it during game three I was absolutely shocked and didn’t think that they could be doing what I thought they were doing. To call what is going on classless is a misnomer, it is HEARTLESS. This is not even close to the same thing as what happened with Karl Malone. Malone absolutely abandoned the Jazz for a pathetic last ditch effort at a championship. That was shameless and worth of being booed. But lets all read this carefully. Derek Fisher’s daughter has CANCER. It is the most extreme, life threatening disease there is and you want to boo him because there doesn’t happen to be a doctor in Utah who can treat the rare form that she has. Now, LA being one of the handful of NBA cities that has the resources to help his child makes absolute sense for Fisher to go to. Why wouldn’t he want to return to the franchise where he spent the first 8 seasons of his career and be amongst people and surroundings he is most familiar with, that just makes TOO MUCH SENSE. The Utah fans don’t boo every single player on every single play just “because they are Lakers”. They only boo two people, Kobe Bryant (understandable) and Fisher (unacceptable). It’s just a shame because Fisher is one of the few really good guys in the NBA and is probably the person that least deserves to be booed.

by turs12 on May 12, 2008 4:36 PM MDT   0 recs

We only boo 2 players because...

no one else has given us a reason to boo.

Kobe… he’s Kobe. Plenty of reasons there. (I still remember a game 2 years back where he glared at the ref after the game ended until the ref blew his whistle and gave Kobe the FTs.)
Fisher… he used to play for the Jazz & is now on a rival.

Who else should we boo? No reasons exist to boo anyone…
Walton? He just got posterized by Ronnie Price… on a block!
Radmanovic? He came to Utah to snowboard and got injured. What’s to boo?
Odom? Vujacic? Farmar? Mbenga? Gasol?

No one else has given us a reason to boo them.

As for heartless & classless… yes, those fans exist. They exist everywhere… every fan base.
But not all Jazz fans are heartless/classless.
So don’t just group us all in.

The point

made earlier by some posters was that Fisher was only being booed because he was a Laker and not because the fans perceived him to be “ditching” their franchise or whatever. So my argument is that if you are going to be someone just because they are a Laker then they should be booing every single player who ever touches the ball because they are also Lakers. This more or less proves that they weren’t booing Fisher just because he is a Laker, otherwise everyone would hear it, and that they are made he bolted town even though he had a good reason.

by turs12 on May 12, 2008 10:09 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

I also

don’t think that all Utah fans are heartless/classless, just that this is an example of one particular classless act. I have no problem with players being booed (like Kobe, he deserves it) but more or less what I perceive the reason to be for it. I actually know someone who attended the game on Sunday from LA and said that Utah was one of the more tame places he had ever been in terms of vulgarities, obscenities, and tasteless heckling so kudos for that.
