What is Leandro Barbosa worth in the draft?
What is Leandro Barbosa worth in this year's draft?
LB may have been picked 28th in 2003, but the former sixth man of the year shot 44% from the arc last year and has a relatively cheap contract.
Rumors from East Valley Trib are that he and Diaw are up for grabs in order to secure a second (FIRST) round draft pick.
My problem with this is that you have developed rotation proven products that will be traded for a draft number and a pocket full of mumbles such is potential.
No matter how rotation-ready the Suns think first-round players will be, or how ready DJ and Alando will be, it sounds like the Suns are moving in the rebuilding and cost-cutting direction.
Hope sells tickets almost as much as big names do. Looks to me like the Suns will trade winning for big names & hope.
So my question to you - what is LB, a known commodity, worth in the draft?
And who would be a taker?

Voting Irregularities
I voted for #1-5, just because the Suns have #15 and I wouldn’t give up LB to get to #10. Perhaps you need more seggregation at the lower numbers.

That's a good point
But I wouldn’t rule out the Suns moving not only to 10 but even to 13. I don’t think they’re necessarily shooting for a high-end prospect, but rather for depth and youth. I really think they may be looking for a Speights/Rush, Alexander/Lopez, Batum/Lopez type of combo. Also, could we turn down an offer of Diop and the 21st pick from the Nets for Leandro?
Of course, we can’t ignore the irony of trading away Leandro so we can get younger.
I think the hardest thing about “projecting” the Suns’ pick right now is that it’s really hard to tell what the hell we’re doing. If we really are in cost-cutting mode, then I have little faith left in Steve Kerr. Indecisive, indecisive.

LB's worth
NBA Draf.net compares Russell westbrook to LB. And Westbrook is projected anywhere from 7 to 11. I am puzzled to read how LB and Boris are being considered to get a second round choice, though. I would think either of them are worth a top ten pick, and both of them should bring at least New York’s pick, Balkman, and a second rounder.

ZF and Reading
I guess this just proves the point that a certain school in Chapel Hill, NC doesn’t have very high standards…
ZF says…
Rumors from East Valley Trib are that he and Diaw are up for grabs in order to secure a second round draft pick
and the actual articles says…
The Suns are also exploring the idea of acquiring a second first-round choice. Doing so might cost them Leandro Barbosa or Boris Diaw

yeah, meant second first round draft pick.
I think it’s implicit in the post, tho not very.

hence the 25-50 as the last choice
only 2 rounds of the draft…

LB's value
And btw – I think if you are going to trade a guy like LB with his great contract, proven NBA abilities and established role then you HAVE to get back a rotation worthy big man like Diop or Petro AND a 1st round pick.
LB has his issues, but he’s a great example of how long it takes young players to develop their talent. You are not going to get anyone in this draft below the 2 or 3 seed that will contribute anything near what LB gives for at least several years. The Suns have a pressing need at Center and if they can fill that AND get a potential player then fine – go for it. But he’s obviously not a guy that you “dump” for future prospects only.

Agreed on both posts
The EVT article is easy to mis-read, I was so surprised to read that Diaw or LB might go for a 2nd-rounder that I had to go back and more carefully read that they might go for a second 1st-rounder.
Also, I’ve posted this before, LB is one of the top bang-for-the-buck players in the league. You could certainly trade him to get a better player, but that would cost you against the cap. I’m just an armchair GM, but i wouldn’t trade him for a pick any higher than #5. Diaw, on the other hand, is the exact opposite.

Your too kind to ZF....
and while I get what your saying about LB vs. Diaw, I can’t help but think that based on talent, ability and versatility that Diaw wins out. He’s tough to swallow at $9m/yr but there’s very few players that can do what he does on both ends.

Sarver again?
You don’t have to guarantee a second round pick you and you do for a first round pick. Trade LB and Diaw for a second pick and you get rid of 14 mil of salary and you can pay the second rounder about half a mil for one year and then release him. Or, never give him a contract in the first place. Sounds like a Sarver/Kerr play to me. Now, does anyone have any doubts why D’Antone left with this pair running the team?

Um...
First, we’re talking about a second first round pick, so I’m not sure what the point of your post is. Second, you can’t trade 14 million dollars of salary for a draft pick unless you have a trade exception, which we do. But it’s only 8M. So we could technically trade Leandro but not Boris.
Of course, this would never happen, so we probably shouldn’t be talking about it anyway.

Done deal
ESPN says both of them are on the block. Barbosa will probably go but I doubt if anyone will want Doris. But the will save a few mil dumping Barbosa and I am sure that is the motivation.

ESPN -with a grain of salt
I am sick and tired of the nonsense that comes out of Bristol. They have been wrong SO many times. Is this reported widely on other sports outlets?

For some reason..
I feel that if we trade LB, it will come back and bite us in the ass.

DJ
I would be really excited if DJ could just attain to Rondo’s offensive level. Then he just might be able to stay on the court long enough to lock somebody down.
Funny, I think DJ is going to benefit greatly by having Porter as coach. He played very tentatively on offense last year, like he was afraid to make mistakes. I bet the only reason DJ got time last year is Kerr. I bet D’A didn’t want to play him at all.
