Trade Barbosa, Keep Diaw

Over the disapointing suns playoff years Leandro Barbosa has consistently choked. On the other hand, Boris Diaw saved the suns from an embarassing spurs sweep to a 5 game end to the season. Here is what I would do if I was Steve Kerr, trade Leandro Barbosa and Grant Hill for the Clippers 7th overall pick and draft D.J. Augustin over Jerryd Bayless. Trust me, I'm a wildcats fan and Bayless was an overrated ballhog who folded under pressure. He was never the leader on the team and I have no idea why he's so high on the draft board. If Augustin isn't there, then take Russell Westbrook. Boris Diaw is young, talented, and a great defender who stalled Tony Parker for the one game he defended him in game 4.

Interesting

I would generally have to agree with the sentiment that if one must be traded, Barbosa is the one, and I do believe the Clippers, with a hole a SG, would be interested in Barbosa.

But how could the Suns justify taking D.J. over Westbrook (or Alexander) if he’s available. D.J. may become a great PG, but his defense is lousy and the last thing we need is another lousy-not average, but lousy-defender. Westbrook is a superb perimeter defender and is thus clearly the choice.

Also: I don’t understand the Grant Hill inclusion here. I’m not sure why the Clippers would want an aging SF or, ironically, why we would give up our aging SF, a position at which we have no depth. This can’t be about salary, since you mentioned no Clippers player coming in return. I don’t understand that from either side.

agreed

If the Clips will do it, trade Barbs for the #7 and their 2nd round choice. I also agree that if we snag the #7, it has to be for Joe Alexander. Then if Brendan Rush is available for the #15 and Richard Hendrix for the #36, the Suns’ draft day will have been a resounding success. They could use the #48 to draft Tomic and leave him overseas.

Joe Alexander is Overrated

Stop with this obession with Alexander, if we draft him at 7 it would be a huge mistake!
I dont know if you guys watch college basketball but he was a 26% shooter from 3! and thats college 3’s how do you expect him to step out hit NBA threes consistanly.. Please dont give me the “oh well the suns will help him be a better shooter” he had 3 years in college to become a better three point shooter and still bad results. Sure he is super athletic and his mid range game isnt bad, but the thing is he had a good final 10 games of the season and played a decent tournament.. you know who else did the same thing.. Tyrus Thomas, im not comparing the two because they have different games but dont be so up on the hype.. The right choice is westbrook if he is there

The right choice

may very well be Westbrook. And no one said that Alexander was an great or even good three point shooter. I don’t think, however, that not being a great three point shooter precludes one from being a great prospect.

The “obsession” with Joe Alexander is based on the fact that he 1) has tremendous athletic tools 2) has only played basketball for five years 3) has improved remarkably each year within that span 4) has an uncanny work ethic 5) has many impressive skills already (shot-blocking, finishing, mid-range jumper, shot-mechanics, fadeaway) and while many of his other skills (shooting range, ball-handling) are still developing, they are far beyond those of Thomas, who, more or less, could only dunk when he entered the draft.

That said, I would say that Westbrook is better pick for some teams. Alexander is more of a project-type though not nearly at the same level of DeAndre Jordan or Javale McGee. But to say that Westbrook may be a better prospect than Joe Alexander is not to say that Joe Alexander is not a great prospect. And let’s not forget that Westbrook is a tweener without great PG instincts and he doesn’t dribble well nor shoot particularly well. In fact, I think you could make the case that Westbrook’s 33% 3 pt. shooting is at least as much of a weakness as Alexander’s 26% shooting, since Westbrook is a guard. And Westbrook shoots only 71% from the line, which is awful for a guard. Alexander shoots 81%.

Neither player is perfect. But both are excellent prospects.

Some GM is saying

Westbrook isn’t even up to Barbosa’s level…

Westbrook

I agree, both are good prospects. I just know you cant draft alexander that high, I go to ASU and i have the chance to watch westbrook in person, and he is electric. When collison was out he was averaging almost 7 assists a game running the point. He is Fast, Athletic, and plays excellent defense. On top of that he can be the understudy of steve nash?

I disagree

First I say we trade them both and Diaw mostly becase we are paying him 9 mil a year for really nothing; other than you say one game. If we can get a top 14 draft pick for him and another player (to balance salary). If you want to call it rebuilding when you get one of the best college players, then whatever.
Also, the clippers would never do that trade esp. with grant hill in it (no offense to hill, but he’s a little to old.)

I’m also a U A fan but i have to completely disagree with your statement about J.B. being a ball hog. He was the best player on the team, which is hard because I love Chase, but he did what he had to do to let us win, which happend way to infrequently i have to say.

In my opinion d.j. won’t be taken until after the lottery picks.

Lastly, if we trade both players, the rumors are we would trade Barbosa to Toronto for T.J. ford and their #17 pick OR trade Boris and get Martell Webster (21 year old swingman) and get their #13 pick. If either of these happend we could then possibly trade up to the top 10 if we included our 2nd round (#48 overall).

then we could get a real play maker…. but then we could always to what we have been donig and trade those picks away for veterens (O please Kerr don’t do that)
