Race. Horse.

Shaquille O'Neal has always been an arrogant buffoon. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy his schtick from time to time, but he is what he is. And since he's a Phoenix Sun now, that means I have to put up with it more often than when he was a Laker or a Heat (How exactly does that work in the singular? He was a degree? A calorie? A joule? Anyone?).
So he got all juvenile and freestyled some silliness about Kobe Bryant's tongue exploring his massive buttocks. And he cursed a bit. And he dropped an N-bomb. And it ended up on TMZ. And, now, he's lost his badge.
Yup, Sheriff Joe is asking his greatest PR ploy since pink underwear to turn in his badge due to his "racial conduct." Now I will certainly not argue that this was conduct unbecoming of a deputy sheriff (volunteer or not), but can this truly be construed as "racial conduct?"
I don't mean to re-ignite a race or language war here, but I don't see how a black guy using the N-word to refer to himself in a rap, um, "song" is racial misconduct. Sure, some people may find the word offensive, but it seems a bit of a stretch to claim that Shaq is demonstrating any sort of bias or racist sentiment.
Unless of course, by racial conduct, he meant Shaq was conducting himself as a wannabe rapper of color. In which case, instead of revoking his badge because of his use of the N-word, he should really be revoking it due to Shaq's abuse of meter and rhyme. "I'm a horse; Kobe ratted me out, so now I'm divorced." Wait, what? You're a horse? But you rode one in a commercial. How can this be? Not only am I confused, sir, but if you are indeed a horse, do me a favor and either win this team a race or go out to pasture and take your cap-killing contract with you.
I'm not saying that Sheriff Arpaio is racist or unfair or shouldn't be reacting the way he is. I just think that, like Shaq, he could have chosen his words with a little more care.

Perhaps Arpaio felt threatened by Shaq?
Arpaio is an extremely shrewd politician.
He only makes moves that are popular with the electorate or are of a self-serving, self-preserving nature.
I think Arpaio’s good in general, but has perhaps been in office a bit too long.

"only" is obviously hyperbole there....

Not sure what he's like these days.
It’s been 10 years since I’ve lived in Maricopa County. I can’t believe he’s still sheriff (because of his longevity, not because of any particular policy beef). Perhaps he’d like to run for president of Zimbabwe next? I hear you can hold that gig for a pretty long time, too.
Amazing that he's survived the corruption complaints
This Blog claims he asked for New Times readership info including IP addresses.
Here are the main claims from the New Times.

"Killing a prisoner in custody is fine...
...but if you use the word ‘nigger’ in a night club, you are OUTTA here!”—Sheriff Joe
I was totally waiting for this line of commenting...
...but I wasn’t sure if it was old news or not. Hooray for priorities.
Media Whore
Joe is a caricature of himself. Some of the stories I could tell … (but won’t, for fear of having deputies at my door later this week).
He just couldn’t let the opportunity to insert himself in national news pass him by. That is all this is about. Anyone who thinks differently is wrong.
Mmmmm ... Guinness
I have never lived in Phoenix
so, excuse my asking, what the hell is all this?

What all of this is
Sheriff Joe Arpaio is Maricopa County Sheriff. Phoenix is in Maricopa County. Sheriff Joe is known (largely among his friends, family, and media admirers) as “the toughest sheriff in America.” He’s famous for things like tent city (outdoor prisoner warehousing that gets a touch hot during the summer months), chain gangs, a citizen posse, sting operations, chasing down illegal immigrants, making prisoners wear pink underwear and watch Newt Gingrich videos, denying prisoners cigarettes and pornography, making prisoners eat disgusting meals that nonetheless meet minimum caloric requirements, etc. He’s also (in)famous for allegations of mis-using public funds, abusing prisoners, general corruption, and measuring his effectiveness by virtue of how many column-inches of newspaper coverage and seconds of air-time he gets, rather than ho-hum stuff like crime control and prevention.
Shaq, because of his interest in law enforcement, signed up as a special deputy with Arpaio. He did similar things in LA and Miami. Arpaio allowed him to sign up because it was good publicity. Arpaio just “fired” him from his (largely meaningless) special deputy role, though, after it was revealed that Shaq did a little rap directed toward Kobe in which Shaq used the word “nigger.” Sheriff Joe said that he doesn’t condone “this type of racial conduct.”

Nice recap beatcal
just the right balance of fact and flip…well done sir. Well done.
Oh, and for the record Sheriff Joe is a media whore and a disgrace to law enforcement and criminal justice as our constitution mean it to be.
Of course, Shaq is also a disgrace and a joke and the Worst Trade Ever. I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest that this isn’t the last time we will be discussing something stupid that came out of Shaq’s mouth.

Seriously, you can have him.
happy to help
If you ever visit our fair city, it will be virtually impossible for you to leave town without being exposed to Sheriff Joe and County Attorney Andrew Thomas. They are both media whores, to use Phoenix Stan’s apt phrase.
Isn't Anyone Going to Ask...
...why Sheriff Joe gave Shaq a badge in the first place? Shaq hasn’t done anything too far out of character here. Isn’t anyone paying attention??
