Is Eddie Johnson getting snubbed?
So, there were two Suns broadcasters vying for potential coaching slots a few weeks back. Eddie Johnson, and Dan Majerle. Dan was chosen by Kerr and Porter
I realize that Dan Majerle and Terry Porter had been teamates, and so naturally they have a working chremisty.... BUT, when selecting an assistant coach, to me, it isn't about finding a guy who your head coach is best friends with, rather, it ought to be about finding the best basketball mind. it's clear that Eddie Johnson is a more legitimate leader, and more intellectually sound.
Johnson is famous for his shooting technique (as evidenced by his good career and many shooting dvd's) and basketball knowledge. HIs shooting advice has the potential to help Robin Lopez, A. Tucker, DJ Strawberry, and even Goran Dragic (if he ever gets here)
Sure Thunder Dan was a good hustle player...but you can't coach that anyway. He's famous for his love of 'the night-life' (aka partying)... as such, I don't see him being nearly as focused on developing players.
Eddie Johnson seems like he would be a far more serious coach, as well as someone that wouldn't take any disrespect from his payers. That discipline is something the Suns have sorely needed. Johnson has always conducted himself with professionalism and poise. From Majerle, I just get the feeling that he feels like coaching "just because it might be fun".
Dan Majerle should stick to broadcasting!

Definitely.
I think Eddie Johnson was probably to more serious candidate.
There’s also Jeff Hornacek to think about, who many people here preferred over Eddie Johnson.
But between them, you have three guys who have never coached, two of them broadcasters and all of them with delusions of their coaching IQ.

totally, ZonaFlash
I really was gunning for Hornacek or the Spurs shooting coach, that Chip guy. But Majerle really scares me…
Oh, and I had a question, is it official that Jay Humphries is out of a job? or is he still a ball boy/’coach’ of the team?

The Dan Majerle thing.
Dan does bring some good defense to the table. I’m just plagued by the memories of what happened when they moved the 3-point line in. He gave up on the lane and just bombed away. It made me sad.

I guess he was injured -
so he had to trade the thunder in for bombs.

However...
The #1 consideration on a management team has to be chemistry, not skills. For instance, I have worked wit hsome great software developers, but they had the people skills of a fence post. I worked with one guy who worked against us at every turn. We have just got out of a situation where the GM and coach weren’t on the same page.
You have to let Porter choose his own people. If he is comfortable with Majerle, that’s what we should do.

Yeah - fine with that, but TP already has Igor as his homer.
Good point nonetheless.

Perhaps
I think that’s true to a certain extent. But I honestly don’t see what Majerle brings to the table at all.
I’m worried his mindset is just “New City, New Team” and he feels uncomfortable in a new environment and so he is just adding any cronies he can to make it more smooth. I believe that assistant coaches need to tangibly add something to the team. I think EJ has more to give than Dan
