Huh ??
What overabundance? Giricek is a free agent and we didn’t sign any SG yet …

I was gonna ask the same question.
Plus, from what you said about DJ in the summer league, I’m not sure that he’s good enough yet to get into the rotation.

Exactly
Dj ain’t ready for primetime to backup Nash.
We need a PG badly if we are going to get Nash sub-30 min/game and 12 games off.
Not many options… at this “point”, I would welcome Sammy Cassell if he would take the minimum.

Too many two's
We right now have Bell, LB, Tucker and DJ.
LB and DJ theoretically can play PG but I think we all know that neither can can be trusted to actually get starters minutes at the point and we need someone that can.
Btw – GG is a small fwd and now that we have Barnes there’s no way he’s coming back.

so.... It's the same rotation as last year.
It’s not too many. And Tucker is more SF than Giricek, IMO.

All SGs and no PGs, heh?
I never thought I would say I like PG.
Frankly, we can’t afford GG, and like it was said, 2 many SGs, and only one PG who’s hanging out with lazy-ass Baron Davis on the road to early retirement and part-time work.

So we have Bell, LB, Tucker, and DJ.
Bell = Starter
LB = #1 option as of now to back up PG AND SG
Tucker & DJ = Sophomores who will be fighting to get time in the rotation
I think it would be silly to get rid of Barbosa seeing as he is our 2nd best option right now at the #1 and #2 spots. As far as trying to fill in the back up point guard spot, we should be looking for a veteran to sign at the minimum.. since we will be getting Dragic the season after next.

Matt Barnes?
I mean, anyone? A whole thread about SGs and not a single mention of Matt Barnes? Que?

Matt Barnes = 3/4
Dude’s not a shooting guard. He’s a solid small forward that can occasionally even play the 4.

Barnes
played minutes at SG with the Kings, Clippers, and Knicks. Yes, he’s ideally a SF, but his great length lets him play PF if you want to go small (he’s only 6’7” 225). That’s why the Warriors played him a lot of minutes at PF: they play small all the time. I mean, Stephen Jackson is their crunch time PF.
But Barnes can dribble and can pass and has the mobility to defend the 2. He’s played SG in the past, and I would be surprised if he doesn’t log minutes there as a Sun (if he’s getting any minutes at all).

But still....
Playing Matt Barnes occasionally at the 2 doesn’t fill the need of a backup PG and SG if Barbosa were traded.

What about SF?
Wasn’t Hill on a 1-year deal? Anyone see that he’s re-signed for the upcoming campaign?
btw, it’s nice to be back on the Brightside now that my move to NorCal is complete. Hiya guys!

It was a two year deal
and the second year was a player option, and Hill has already picked up the option.

I believe Hill’s was a 2-year deal, with the 2nd year being a player option, which he picked up. So yes, he’s coming back.

Speaking of lack of depth
the bigger issue is in the front line.
We currently have under contract 3.5 big men. Shaq and Lopez at Center. Amare at the 4. And Diaw at the….??
We are already at over over the lux tax w/ the guys under contract so there’s no question in my mind that someone will get moved. Either LB (my choice) or Tucker.
Or you could just go all in and trade Erkel now while he has value to a team like Cleveland or Orlando and basically start over. I don’t see that hapening though.

Agreed
I don’t think we’re going all in until maybe next year. You just don’t start rebuilding when you still have 330 pounds of 20M Salary on your roster.
And, yes, we need a big man and while I would be willing to trade Barbosa to do it that would mean we would need a fairly solid one in return. You don’t trade a sixth man of the year for Tony Battie or something. Alternatively, we could spend the veteran’s minimum on a big like Francisco Elson, Theo Ratliff, Lorenzen Wright or Jamaal Magloire. Those obviously aren’t great options but they should be cheap and would give us another body to add to STAT, Shaq and Rolo.
Or maybe we could get uber-inspired and take a minimum salary chance on Elton Brown, which would actually make sense, or just for the hell of it, Steven Hill. Aside from his beard, he did give everybody fits defensively and he’s just damn cool.
We also still need a PG. Awesome.

I understand why some people want ot move LB or Diaw
I just don’t think its a good move to trade Barbosa when our only other backup guards right now are DJ and Tucker. I know that would open up a little bit of salary cap space, but are we gonna get enough in return or be able to fill the void of backup PG/SG?
by brian13 on Aug 1, 2008 8:22 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
yep I agree
Barby – I think with the right coaching, he could be a decent defender and hopefully come out of his shooting slump. Playing along side Nash will only help him.
Diaw – What can you do with him? Flashes of brilliance, but boatloads of incompetence. So bad no one in the NBA wants him. We can’t even give him away really. I actually think he’s okay on the floor, but a bad influence off it. Not a hard worker by any means, or he’d have an upper body and stay out of the dirty.

I think
you would have to list Matt Barnes as a backup SG as well.
As for trading Barbosa, I’m not absolutely opposed to it, but I think it will be tough to get equivalent value. But sure no one is untradeable should the right deal come along.

We're fine up front
We need a real PG right now.

I think saying
we’re “fine” up front is a bit much. We only have three genuine bigs. That’s not fine. But, yes, we need a backup PG as well.
