FIBA to adopt NBA rules

We discussed the merits of FIBA vs. NBA rules a few months ago and came to a few good insights (see this post). It seems the FIBA Technical Commission agrees with our great minds at BSoS (this abbreviation's for you, pstan). In watching the "Redeem Team" smack down Andrew Bogut's bum ankle and the rest of the Aussie squad, Doug Collins mentioned some rule changes.

Star-divide

It seems that the key is being changed to that of the NBA rectangle style with a restricted area below the basket. Collins stated that the size/shape change was mostly because of the 3-second violations being more common with the trapazoidal key.

The goaltending rule is being tightened up a little bit, but you will still be able to swat the ball away when over the cylinder.

The 3-point line will be scooted back to change strategy, making distance shooters more valuable.

Also of curious note is the 24-second shot clock. From the linked website:

"If the throw-in is to be administered in the frontcourt, if required by the respective rules, the 24-second device shall be reset as follows:

- If 14 seconds or more are displayed on the 24-second device at the time the game was stopped, the 24-second device shall not be reset and shall remain the same.

- If 13 seconds or less are displayed on the 24-second device at the time the game was stopped, the 24-second device shall be reset to 14 seconds. "

FIBA World Cup Coming Soon

This is the first step to creating an true international system of competition similar to the FIFA World Cup every four years. How cool would that be!

because apparently

Having uniform rules means, to Americans, doing what we do.

yeah, i wish the nba would adopt the trapezoid. it favors skilled players as opposed to guys who have an offensive game consisting of getting position right under the hoop and bowling over the defender for a dunk. in a related story, shaq has already been selected to the 2012 olympic team.

Flopping Mitigates the lack of a Trapezoid

NBA doesn’t need the Trapezoid. Every time a post player posts up, all his defender needs to do is fall over and its a foul now.

Bout rules:

GREAT POST

The best rules for me:
3 point line: NBA
Basket interference: FIBA
Illegal defense: FIBA (I really like mix zone defenses with 1 on 1 defenses, zone defenses are all TEAM WORK)
Restricted area: FIBA (why the heck are FIBA changing this rule to rectangle???)
Time-outs: FIBA
Semi-circle: NBA

I really think FIBA and NBA have to come to an agreement to play same rules in both sides of Atlantic to improve basketball.

The thing is,

as I said in the post, these small differences are what make basketball maybe a little bit more entertaining. Because of the trapezoid and 3 point line etc etc, basketball players train and perform differently. Big men are more versatile, smaller players are not afraid to get in the paint (Tony Parker anyone?) and develop great driving-to the basket-skills.
I think its good to unify some rules…but not all. Diversity of styles is what makes basketball fun.

I agree

I meant in FIBA tournaments where USA Team plays, because right now if referees call like in Europe(something not made this Olympics) USA is the worst affected but if they don’t, like this Olympics the other countries have the hard part.

That makes way too much sense

except I don’t like the FIBA basket interference rule…It favors Shawn Bradley and we all saw how that turned out…
