Using the stink to get pub...
Here is a classic case of a grand standing politician (up for re-election this year) who is famous for using any excuse in the book to get his name in the paper jumping on board a local sports issue to get attention.
This guy would go after cat litter dumping if he thought it would get him a few lines of press.

Regardless of motives...
…anything that might get more of the information into the public eye, I’m for. Just wondering why he picked a playoff series the Suns easily won, rather than looking at that infamous Game 3 with San Antonio.

He's a county attorney
so he ain’t got no jurisdiction in Texas.
But I’m glad he’s looking out for the people of Phoenix. I know I’d sleep better in Austin if I knew someone was making sure no one was double dribbling down our streets.

Good point
Actually, I was thinking that Game 3 was played in Phoenix. But you’re right, it was SA. My bad.

The association should be doing that
This in an NBA issue. Not a legal issue for the Maricopa County Attorney.
I agree that light needs to be shed but come on – this is just a ploy to get his name in the press. Again.
Par for the course for a County Attorney that lives in the shadow of Sheriff Joe – Supreme Law Enforcement Publicity Hound – Arpaio

Ploys
Our political system encourages such publicity-seeking acts. It was designed to work that way. Persons are elected for what they do. Getting something in the paper highlights it. That’s how it is supposed to work. Now, the decision/acts will be out there for the public and they can decide on how to react — positively (“yeah, we’re busting that gambler”) or negatively (“what a blowhard, there are murderers running free”).
Politicians are supposed to seek, and receive, public attention. Joe’s done that and his continued re-election is a reflection on either the apathy or the stupidity (or a combination of both) of the voting population.
Don’t knock the politicians for doing what they’re supposed to do — take it out on the ignorant public.

I agree…If you are out to really make a point, choose a game or series we lost (in Phoenix)-or where the officiating looked, um, biased or something. Maybe he lost some money on one of the games with LA.

Who is the enemy here?
PStan, I get that you hate certain politicians, but anyone that tries to stand up to David Stern is alright in my book. Stern is a menace. I am convinced that there is more to this than just Donaghy. If the county attorney wants to do something, then fine by me.

Not something
I get your point but I don’t see where this guy’s actions are “doing something” to help the issue as much as getting his name in the paper.
Nothing will come of this other then making Phoenix fans look even more like whiners.

What you're advocating, then
is that Thomas go after Stern for his involvement?
I’m not being sarcastic. That’s a good idea. He’s refused to return any of my email inquiries. Bastard.
BTW, I generally have no problem with slapping any criminal with as many indictments as possible in as many jurisdictions as possible so as to put him in jail/prison for as long a time as possible (unless he’s already serving 10 life sentences or something). So, it wouldn’t bother me to see all state officials from all states in which there was evidence of game-fixing to go after him.

Not a legal matter
as a tax payer in this county I really fail to see how my County Attorney should be spending my money pursing this
This is a sports matter impacting Phx. Not a legal matter. I am fairly sure there are more pressing matters for the prosecuters in my county to address before calling me a victim of a crime committed by this ref. Maybe. Especially, since the guy is already been convicted by the feds
The sports media and to the degree possible the fans should be harrassing Stern to answer relavent questions and provide a more open process when it comes to ref’s in general.
Sports = entertainment
County Attorney = crime in the county
Ergo Thomas = entertainment

Most people would be violently opposed to some of the things that their taxpayer money is used for. Very few people would approve of them all. But I think this is rather benign compared to say, building stadiums for multibillionaires, or providing chaplains in the service for Wiccans, or indoctrination of elementary schoolkids in everything from the junk science of global warming to alternative lifestyles.
Should we blame the county attorney that the failed print media in the state writes and prints stuff that is ultimately irrelevant and meant to sell papers?
I am not saying this Thomas guy is perfect. I have yet to find the politician who is. But I detect a little self righteousness here. Let’s look at how you spend your boss’s money.

CO2
The problem with the Prius is the nickel in the battery. A very heavy metal that takes an enormous toll on the environment to mine and then to dispose of. Even Steven. At least you wasted your boss’ money on something that takes less gas. Do you pay for gas? If you do, then good move. If you don’t, then I highly recommend you buy a corvette or mustang or something to stick it to him.

On a positive note...
Thomas’ office prosecuted a ring of car thieves that hit me pretty hard a few years ago and they are now serving time and paying restitution.
