The US Mens Basketball Team is Missing Something.

Hey, Suns fans I hope you guys are having a good tail end of the summer ( even though the heat will linger until october...ughh). But I really hope you guys are getting excited for the Olympics like I am.

I was looking at some of the US mens basketball teams fixtures this morning and come across quite an interesting article written by Scoop Jackson.

Its an article about the one thing the US team is missing that some people cant seem to put their finger one. Well Scoop has provided us with a little insight to help us out.

Enjoy.....

They looked good, didn't they? Flashes of '92, right? Like we 'bout to get that ol' thing back.

But something still doesn't feel right, right? There's still something wrong, isn't there? It's like something is missing, but you just … can't … put … your … finger on it.

Amare Stoudemire brings something to the table that perhaps no other American player can.

I do like him calling Amare "mean"
The U.S. team is made up of great players, but none are mean. They’re all too nice.

Nothing Changed

Although the results may be different this year for Team USA—nothing has changed. The three most common criticisms I read about the ‘04 squad were: 1) Lack of defense, 2) Lack of (good) 3-point shooting, and 3) Lack of a team mentality/chemistry, and 4) Selecting a bunch of all-stars.

Looking at this year’s team I see: 1) a bunch of all-stars, 2) lack of 3-point shooting, and 3) lack of defense. The only problem that seems to have been rectified is that the team acts more like a team (at least on camera) and seems to be more willing to pass and share the wealth. Nine of the players are all-stars who will have a lot of their focus on marketing and scoring. Adding Redd and then playing him in garbage time was probably not the answer to fixing the 3-point shooting. And, wrt/ defense, most of these seem to believe that defense means more steals. Or maybe that’s what they’ve been told.

I don’t see why Boozer and Prince aren’t getting a lot more minutes. I don’t see why the offense isn’t being run through the post through Boozer. I don’t see why we needed Kidd, Paul, AND Williams. I don’t see a 7-footer. I don’t see why we sub-in a midget backcourt of Paul, Williams, and Wade. Why not distribute size more evenly?? If Kobe’s such a team player, I’m sure he won’t mind coming off the bench for Wade. I mean, Wade has outperformed him. I have learned that Kobe takes ill-advised jumpshots in international play, too. I have seen that Lebron does the same. I have seen Melo get humiliated time and again. Did you see the China game, where he went up soft for a rebound and had it putback over his head? I would move Melo to the end of the bend and give him mop-up duty. I would move Boozer into the starting line-up and run a lot of offense through him. Also, I would run the Cleveland offense at times. You know, the one where Lebron starts near halfcourt and then just drives the ball to the hole. It looks ugly, but its nearly unstoppable in the NBA. Why would players form Angola or Germany be able to stop it? It’s frustrating. I do think Stat would have helped though. Just because the rest of the world shoots tons of 3’s doesn’t mean we need to. Let’s play our game and pound it inside. Stat would have helped with that. It’s not like he would have been a downgrade on defense over Melo.

I think you're missing something basic here, RTG

Yes, it’s true that the U.S. is sending a team with streaky perimeter shooting, and yes, many of them are all-stars ( though I have never understood why that is a problem in and of itself unless you think all-stars are necessarily selfish, which I would say is untrue as selfishness is certainly a non all-stars trait as well). And the U.S. is maybe mildly undersized though our primary competitor (Spain) isn’t especially large either. Greece is the only dangerous team with size, but to play a slower post-up game against Greece would be to play to their strength. Our speed and guard play is where we can dominate.

But at the most basic level here, RTG, I think you’re just not realizing that this is the best team we’ve sent in a long, long time.

To compare to ‘04.

a) Melo, Wade, and Lebron were rookies when they went to Athens. Now they are all, especially Lebron and Wade, substantially better. As you’ve hinted at, Lebron is clearly the best player in the world right now. That was not even close to true four, or even two, years ago.

b) Our point guards have gone from Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury and ‘04 DWade to Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Jason Kidd. That is a monster improvement.

c) We now have Kobe and Dwight Howard. Kobe, no matter how much you dislike him, is a better perimeter defender than anyone offered on the 04 or 06 squads. And Dwight Howard is unmatched athletically in the NBA. Against the World, there’s not a big man who can stay within two strides of him in the full court or keep him off the offensive boards.

d) The only major disparity we have is the loss of Tim Duncan, who was invited to play but like KG and Amare, chose not to. You can’t blame U.S. Basketball for that. Also, Tyson Chandler got hurt.

Also, I don’t understand your strange fascination with the Boozer offense. The only huge advantage we still have against the world (aside from depth; we could field at least two more medal contending teams) is athleticism. We are much faster than any other team. To play away from that strength is not only to play to our weakness (half-court offense) but also to hide our opponents’ weaknesses. They’re comparatively slow. All of them. But in the half-court teams like Greece and Spain and Argentina and Lithuania can pick us apart with their three point shooting and on D sit back in a zone while we throw up bricks. Boozer may be a nice option in the half-court should it come to that, but if it has come to that assume that things are not going well (e.g. vs. Greece in ‘06).

The U.S. has no other choice but to play high pressure defense on the opposing team’s guards to create turnovers then use our speed, especially of our big men, to exploit other teams in the full-court. It will not be sufficient to stop the other team, rebound, then go set-up our offense. We can’t be the Spurs, because we don’t have the personnel for that and these international teams are too disciplined in their half-court defense. We have to create turnovers. Lots of them. Luckily, a number of our players are adept at doing just that (Paul, Wiliams, Kidd, Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Prince). And do not underestimate how much more effective guys like Lebron and Wade can be on defense when they are not burdened with being a primary and sole offensive option, especially against the lackluster ball-handlers of teams like Germany, Greece and Lithuania. We’re more or less playing Kentucky basketball circa 1992, which is funny when you think of who our coach is.

But If we are unable to get into a full-court game, we likely will not win the gold. This is why Spain is so tough for us, because they’re our only competitor with the strength and depth of guard-play (Rubio, Fernandez, Calderon, Navarro) to withstand our defensive pressure.

Which is why I’m very happy we get to play them in the group stage (Saturday!). I have a feeling the U.S. will need at least one good look at them before they can get it right.

P.S. I’m not a huge Melo NBA fan, but don’t forget how obnoxiously effective he’s been in international play. By himself, he won us two games in the World Championships, especially against Italy. Perhaps, he wasn’t at his best against China, but his international track record demands that he start.

PS to the PS

Looking at the Melo comment, it makes me sound more pro-Melo than I am. What I was trying to say was that Coach K undoubtedly has Melo’s 06 performances still in his head, so there’s no way he’s benching. He was too good in that tournament even if maybe it was one time thing.

Personally, I’d like to see Paul/Wade/Kobe/Lebron/Howard on the floor to start and Don Nelson on the bench.

Echo on Boozer

He was way off against Angola today… ANGOLA! His hands were as if made of stone, a la Kwame Brown. Well, maybe not that bad, but it wasn’t good.

Anyhow, the game was ok – here are a few of my thoughts. The energy wasn’t there for much of the game, which was obvious with how sloppy it was. Lots of turnovers in the half and open court. When they motivated themselves though, it was quite a sight (like right before the 1st half ended).

Chris Paul had some nice disruption in the passing lanes and I didn’t notice it as a result of taking terrible risks.

Overall, the play was pretty unselfish with players trying to make the extra (good) pass.

Kobe Bryant was out of rythm offensvely. Maybe he doesn’t get enough shots with the Redeem Team? He played solid defense though, except when he left his man to double down low. Normally not a terrible problem, but his man was on a nice hot streak.

Wade continued playing well. I’m not sure he missed except for when he was fouled on a 3-pt shot. (I stand corrected. I checked the box score, he missed twice)

Dwight Howard is still a dunk machine.

LeBron was channeling the ghost of Dominique Wilkens game with the highlight reel show. A couple of very nice coast-to-coast moves, one of them finished with a nice left-handed dunk!

‘Melo – the box score says he had a nice game, but I didn’t really notice him much through the game. Maybe because he wasn’t forcing it? I dunno…

So those are some of my thoughts. Heh, it was pretty early (5am tipoff) so some of my observations may be off. Any of you get a chance to catch the game? I’m interested to hear your thoughts. I can’t wait until Thursday’s game against Greece!

Mean?

In that way?

There was a referenced to the Chuckster (elbowing the Angolan player) when discussing Stoudemire.

That’s where Jackson lost me. I was kind of thinking he was right until he started comparing those two in that way.

Charles does not have the offensive game of Amare, but Amare is nowhere near as determined as Chuck. At least, he hasn’t proven it yet. Start averaging double-digits in boards, Amare, and then I’ll believe it.
