Official Suns Game Notes

When these teams met eight days ago the Clippers gave the Suns a run for their money after being down 21 points with 6 minutes to go. In that game the Suns when focused for portions of the first and fourth periods went on big runs against a depleted Clippers team. For the rest of the game the team displayed a disappointing lack of effort leading Coach Porter to express his dissatisfaction (and Amare to make excuses).

The Clippers for their part are getting the most out of their rookie shooting guard Eric Gordon and their fourth option at point guard Mardy Collins. As Clipper Steve told us on the pregame podcast, the Clippers are playing hard despite (or because?) their big stars are on the bench.

As is the case in games like this, the Suns biggest obstacle will be themselves. If they can carry forward the effort and enthusiasm from the big win against the Mavs then we should see Dudley, Tucker and Dragic get garbage time minutes. As Shaq perscribes, the key is consistent play.

The performance in this game will tell if the win over the Mavs was a fluke that took advantage of a poor night by the opponent or if it was the start of the next phase of this team's progression.

Two things to look for:

1) Better communication on defense. After the loss to the Pacers we heard a lot about how the Suns don't communicate well on defense. Only Shaq and Hill typically talk which is a key to good team D. In the Dallas game I heard from both the Suns announcers and read somewhere that the Mavs announcers also commented on how much more the Suns were talking on D and how different that was. Let's hope this continues (although it will be hard to tell at home watching on TV).

2) Busting the zone. We learned from Clipper Steve that MDrSr has been playing a LOT of zone with his young team of reserves. The Suns need to bust the zone with patience and good passing and not settle for outside shooting. Look for a lot of high low entry passing from Amare to Shaq or Grant to a guard cutting baseline.

I am also looking forward to getting my first good look at young Eric Gordon. I am still a natural skeptic when it comes to young players on bad teams who put up big numbers and then flame out.

Be sure to check out Clippers coverage over at Clips Nation. I stole their line up card format as you can clearly tell.

Thief!

Of course I stole it from Ben at 3QC; he probably stole it from somebody else. It’s kind of becoming an SBNation de facto standard.

And the Varsity teams are playing at 6:30PST

Kind of ironic that two of Shaq’s old teams are playing tonight at Staples. Heat @ Lakers 6:30PST.

Shaq and Kobe

will be in the same building! One the same day! Alert the press! They might see each other! What would they say? Would Kobe blame Shaq for OJ? Will Shaq drop his pants and moon Kobe?

Anything’s possible!

Sorry for Trolling

But I can’t seem to look away. All of the drama this year has shifted from Hollywood to the desert. And now Shaq’s making his thows? I swear every Suns game I watch I have flashbacks of him as a Laker stepping up to the line and tossing bricks.

The Suns are in the middle of an experiment that to my mind could still go either way. And I gotta tune in to see what happens next.

Btw not sure why it’s taken so long for the Suns to figure out that they can still run even with Shaq. A 35 year old Kareem wasn’t leading the breaks with Magic Johnson.

Wish the Suns were playing the Lakers. Shaq missed the last Suns/Lakers game and with the Bell, Diaw trade that would be more interesting than the Clips, no?

Thats awesome. Its ike a tv show. This team is an experiment, and it could go either way. But it wont be done at th hands of Shaq. He seems to be the only consistant player.

I'm expecting good things today

The play and hustle from last gam should carry over into this game. Not only that, but the team should be even more focused because they saw how good they can be ifthey play right and communicate. Its called a team for a reason; talk to each other!

look at the box score

Everyone on the Suns has at least 1 assist. nice to see.

Go Cards!

I haven’t been paying much attention to the Suns game as I was on Ticketmaster getting my tix for the NFC Championship game!!! I got the cheapest available, $120, and got row 2 in the upper level in the corner. I’m used to sitting in the upper level at Suns and Dbacks games, so that’s no big deal for me.

I've been here

but it seems the only person I had to discuss the game with was a lonely clippers fan bogarting our boards (much like in the game, HA!)

Where is Amar'e?

The whole 4th quarter where is Amar’e? He had two touches and he turned it over trying to feed Shaq…

Huh?

I didn’t get a “clean watch” on this game so I don’t know if I should be happy w/ the road win regardless and just move on or if letting the Clips score 15 more point then they have been is reason for concern w/ our D. Probably the later.

We did start very strong w/ a 12-0 run filled with blocks and steals and then once again the Clips came right back on us. At the end of the 3rd we built a 13 point lead and again blew that forcing the Suns to go to their “we are better and more Vet then you” place and pull it out.

I am going to hold off on a full recap until I can rewatch at least the fourth quarter and try and make some sense of this from you know, a basketball perspective.

No arguing w/ Shaq shooting 100% (12-12) over the past two games and 17-20 (85%) for the year (all 3 games he’s played in so far). It made a huge difference late being able to feed him the ball in the final two minutes without worrying about hack-a-Shaq being used. He had a big 3pt play and then feed Amare in the lane for a drive that resulted in free throws (no assist for Shaq but he deserves the credit).

If he can keep up this FT shooting and we can using him late in tight games….that’s good.
