What Might Be, or Why the Suns Should Sign Stephon Marbury
So Watdogg's earlier exercise in masochistic "What Might Have Been" has forced me to balance it out with an equally outrageous "What Might Be."
I've been kicking around this feeling that the 2009 Phoenix Suns are starting to resemble Shaq's 2006 Miami Heat squad. Observe, if you will, the parallels:
- The 2006 Miami Heat won their championship in O'Neal's second season with the team.
- The Heat had an aging point guard with time for winning a ring running out in Gary Payton. We have Steve Nash.
- The Heat had a fan favorite that everyone wanted to win a ring before retirement in Alonzo Mourning. The Suns have a similar player in Grant Hill.
- The Heat had a bunch of role players willing to play, you know, roles. The Suns bench is deepening under Terry Porter and starting to gel as a unit.
- The Heat had a rising star looking to make his mark with his first title in Dwyane Wade. The Suns have Amare Stoudemire.
- No one gave them a chance at winning the whole enchilada until basically Game 3 of the NBA Finals. Seen anyone touting the Suns as potential champs lately?
However, the Suns are missing 2 key ingredients the Miami Heat had in 2006: a back-up point guard, Jason Williams and an arrogant player that no one wanted to see win a ring, Antoine Walker.
By adding Stephon Marbury to the 2009 Suns roster, Steve Kerr could kill two birds with one stone and basically cement a championship banner in US Airways Center by the end of the season.
Who's with me? Let's start a petition, dammit!

Seriously?
You want a petition drive for Starbury and you didn’t even include a picture?

Imagine
If Kerr signed Marbury and the Suns won a championship, I think the Steve Kerr Moron Meter might explode.
