Bright Side Preview

The Portland Trailblazers face two big questions going into this season.

The first is Greg Oden. Oden in three preseason games is leading his team in scoring with 15 points per game on 51% shooting and he's grabbing almost 10 rebounds and playing 24 minutes. His block rate is down but so are his fouls. If Oden can reach his potential the Blazers are going to be a very good team for a long time.

But would anyone be surprised at this point if Greg only played 20 games this season? He's a guy who's track record leaves a lot to be desired.

For now though, he's on the court and the Suns big man isn't so look for GOden to go nuts against Amare, Frye, Amundson and Clark tonight. The only thing the Suns can do against him is run even faster.

The second question for the Blazers is how they deal with having a target on their back. So many times, we've seen young teams exceed expectations one year and then struggle the following once the bar has been raised.

With three point guards battling for position and talented guys like Rudy and Travis coming off the bench it will be a challenge for them to be keep their heads when things go bad. And things always go bad at some point or another. It's how you react that matters most. Last year the Suns fell apart in the face of adversity. Nate McMillian and his young leaders are going to have to be on top of their game off the court as well as on.

Foulaholic

I’m surprised to hear that Oden’s fouls are down – especially with the way the temporary refs have been blowing the whistle. I’ll have to see it to believe it.

Imagine if the Blazers were smart enough to pick Durant.

I get it. The city wanted Oden, a big affable center on a team full of guards and swingmen, and in an area that loved basketball and wanted a player who was likable, especially after the Jailbazers years. I get that.

But anyone who’s seen Kevin Durant play would have instantly known that he was gonna be a cold blooded killer who loves basketball, just isn’t always comfortable with media.

I hope Oden stays healthy, but his ceiling is pretty low. I’d be content with him putting up 12/11/2 for his career, and that’s sad. Durant? 25/7/4 easy for his career, and that’s taking into account his first and last years, not just his prime.

I know Portland had too many guys at the spot, but you pick the best avaialble and make it work or trade off pieces for draft picks to keep the team young over a period of time. That’s what Oklahoma City has done. Now OKC has a sick nucleus (even Harden, who I’ve seen play several times and am not impressed with. He’s good, but I can’t see him really being great) of young guys who can play together for the next half decade at least (if their contracts can match up).

Good luck Portland, but I think your time is over.

The Cavs lost. Why? LeBron, D.West, M.Williams —→DND

The Heat lost. Why? D.Wade —→DNP

The Spurs lost. Why? They haven’t found out how to pay off the temporary refs quite yet – but give them some time…

2007 - Indiana 6-2
2007 - Atlanta 7-1
2006 - Orlando 6-2
2006 - Golden State 5-1

None of those teams went on to win 65% + of their games.

Oh Cool?

65% of 82 regular season games is 53 games. Last year only 8 teams in the league won 53 or more games.

3 in the Eastern Conference (home of 4 of the teams you mentioned)

and

5 in the West…

Winning 65% of your games is no small task. Good try though my lost BE friend.

Plus - it was key players v. key players in the end tonight -

It was the defense of our bench that forced your turnovers and missed baskets – preseason or not – you brought out the Big Guns in the 4th – we countered and blanked you outright.

P.s. – Did Jared Dudley shut down B.Roy or what? Nah. It’s just preseason…

We plan on going 10-11 deep almost every game. Therefore we have a deeper bench. you may have more talent on your bench, but ours is still deeper ;)

Wow, didnt watch/listen to the game, but wow

I went to the movies to see Toy Story in 3D. Got home just in time to watch the box score turn to “Final.” I am severely impressed. I can tell we played with great poise and hustle. Look at those Steals and Blocks!!!! 11 Steals and 7 Blocks. This is the Phx Suns we’re talking about, right? Amare and Nash both having 20+ pt games? Was tonight the “work-on-steve/amare-pick’n’roll-night?” Who the heck is Carlos Powell!?! Not a bad lookin box score, Carlos. As for the rest of the team, keep up the good work. The leash will be taken off soon enough, and then you can unleash your fury onto the rest of the league (and world). evil laugh

I've seen him play twice now live

and it really looks like his legs aren’t quite at the strength or explosiveness he’s had in the past… but 2 rebounds is bad no doubt. I’d have to watch the game to see if it’s lack of effort or something else

sometimes suns fans can get a bit high strung..

we have alot of issues to work out..but for the most part the blazers have our respect because they tend to piss off the lakers during the season, and that’s good enough for me.

I wish I could have seen the game, it sounds like both teams played well..I’m looking forward to our match ups in the regular season…

by KnowGood on Oct 15, 2009 12:47 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am wondering

If its not the fact that he was playing against Oden. Frye didn’t fare well either in this category. I have only seen Amare play for a bit but its clear that he is still off. Yet I can’t disagree at all, 2 rebs in 30 mins? Not good. Even 5 rebs would have been ok considering the team they were playing against. The Suns got rocked on the boards no doubt, but dominated every other aspect of the game. FG, 3pt, stls, blks, asst. So I am not too concerned about it. Lots of hustle apparently, which is what I like to see.

Go read a book!

by N8lol on Oct 15, 2009 7:15 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt that the hustle is there, even in preseason. It’s great to see!

by SunsFTW on Oct 15, 2009 9:23 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

except, of course...

The Suns got outrebounded by Partizan Belgrade.

The only rebounds I care about are offensive boards, from either team. If we can limit an opponent’s 2nd chance points, we’ll do well. Otherwise, we’ll flail.

"True glory consists of doing what deserves to be written, and writing what deserves to be read".

by Pliny the Elder on Oct 15, 2009 9:48 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

I noticed that too. But did you see Partizan? Bunch of big Euros man. Slow, lanky dudes. I am not surprised they out rebounded us. And in that game Amare had what 6 bounds in less minutes.

Yeah I see that. We need to be grabbing every defensive board there is. Nothing more detrimental to an opposing teams morale than to be scored on on nearly every possession and not be able to get second chances when you miss. As long as we keep their guys off of our boards I think we will be ok.

Go read a book!

by N8lol on Oct 16, 2009 7:54 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

size helps, but rebounding isn't about that...

it’s mostly about positioning, anticipation, aggression and desire. Wooden once said speed beats size.

It’s why Rodman is the best rebounder “of all times”, why Barkley in his prime was a great rebounder, and it’s why players like Kidd and Rondo can outrebound players like Amare.

It’s not well known, but Rodman was one of the great students and tape viewers in the NBA. He spent hours watching other players shoot, and evaluating their tendencies.

by Pliny the Elder on Oct 16, 2009 8:46 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting

I honestly wonder if Amare could get something from watching the tapes of the players he is about to play against. You think he could average more bounds?

Go read a book!
