Game Thread: Suns vs 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers at Phoenix Suns, Oct 16, 2009 8:00 PM MDT

Philadelphia 76ers @ Phoenix Suns

Friday, Oct 16, 2009, 8:00 PM MDT
US Airways Center

This will be my first Suns home game of the Season and it is filled with mystery and intrigue.

  • Will this be the only game Elton Brand plays in Phoenix this season?
  • Will Louis Williams get tangled up with Louis Amundson in a Louie free-for-all?
  • Will Jason Richard have a better dunk then Thad Young?

These and other questions will be answered soon enough...

In the meantime, sit back relax and enjoy these links of the day:

Star-divide

  • Know thy enemy: Phoenix Suns | Lakers Blog | Los Angeles Times
Speaking with the enemy...Phoenix Stan previews the Suns for the LA Times.

  • Fans make the call: NBA starts video rulebook - ESPN
The NBA launched a video rulebook Thursday, a site where fans can watch clips of plays accompanied by explanations of the rules.
  • Suns' defense showing improvement
One NBA scout said Suns win in Portland was the best defensive effort he had seen from Phoenix in six years.

  • azcentral.com blogs - Coro's Suns dish: As real as it gets
Coro's Suns dish: The Suns probably won't go to a real in-season look until next week's final preseason games at home against Sacramento on Tuesday and again against Portland on Thursday in Vancouver, although the latter is more doubtful after just playing them.
  • SUNS: Suns Fan Fest 2009
Suns Fest on October 24th from 11 – 4 pm as the Suns turn US Airways Center into an Orange Fun Fest! Experience tons of family fun and an hour of LIVE Suns action as the team scrimmages on the main court from 1-2 PM! Admission is free, but we are encouraging fans to support St. Mary’s Food Bank by donating a non-perishable food item at the door. Brought to you by the Suns and Hensley.
  • "Don’t You Talk Ugly to Me!" " Blog Archive " Phoenix Suns players like The Hangover
  • We Know What Steve Nash Did this Summer - NB Post-Up
Steve Nash, aka Captain Canada, has had quite a busy summer. Most of those things had actually nothing to do with basketball. Not only did he get a degree from the University of Victoria, he showed up at the Toronto Film festival talking about a Terry Fox documentary he's working on. On top of that he showed his love for soccer by training with the Vancouver Whitecaps (Nash is a part owner) and hosted a charity soccer game. And yes, that was Nash showing up in Toronto when Real Madrid with the mercurial Cristiano Ronaldo in tow to watch Los Galacticos up close. It was also announced that he will be carrying the Olympic torch when Vancouver 2010 rolls around.
  • This is Your Call to Action Suns Fans
As fans, we complain when players only show up half the time. We demand better of them, but shouldn’t we also demand better of ourselves?

Go Suns!!

My second game of the year (preseason). Should be a fun time tonight.

I wondering if the three-ball will be as hot as last game?

Coach Gentry pre game chat

Gentry repeated that he’s impressed with the team’s progress defensively and specifically Amare and Richardson.

He called Amare only 60% in game shape and reiterated that aside from only playing 4 games in 9 months he went for a long time without even being able to work out at all.

Gentry is basically (in so many words) appealing for patience w/ Amare and expects its going to take several weeks to get to his where he needs to be.

Gentry also stayed with the team line of keeping expectations low for the rookies and young players saying they will excite you one night and the next minute show you how much work they still need.

Asked about Elton Brand who’s basically missed two seasons, Gentry said he was still the best on-ball shot blocker in the league

LOL

Aaron McKie is still on the 76ers roster after all these years…

Earl Clark

is 1-4 and the one he made was heavily contested J.

the kid needs to settle down and and pass up the occasional look

Mo Speights

looks a LOT bigger than last year…

Elton Brand looks like he swallowed a Johnny Flynn sized rookie

Mr Frye

after 4.5 games in a Suns uniform you already think that every shot he takes is going in. 3-3 from 3 so far and he’s getting wide open looks that Steve is creating for him.

Dragic isn’t looking so hot

Richardson really does look improved on defense. Very active and mobile.

Amare is clearly not ready yet. He got the ball in a wide open position on the wing off a pick and roll and had to take a couple of extra dribbles which allowed a guard to come strip the ball. In his prime, Amare is elevating from just inside the lane and throwing that mother down….Hopefully that will come (back)

Gentry

is pretty animated…he just screamed “come on, let’s go” after the Suns gave up an offensive rebound.

It was loudest thing I’ve heard all night in this building

Could you hear me up in 230? I was all the way against the wall in row 14 – but was screaming at the top of my lungs through a cup i had cut the bottom out of all night. NOBODY would join in… But I kept at it… Well at least I got a free shirt out of it – our section’s cheerleader came up and handed me one because of my persistence.

But I agree… very weak crowd. When I tried to involve others they just looked blankly at me and laughed… We’re going to need to work on our fan intensity.

They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...

Best part about sitting one row from the court?

Might be being 6 feet from Al McCoy but it might also be the view of the Suns Dancers. Tough call

Jared Dudley

tweeting well. playing well.

He just finished a sweet layup after getting hammered and then delivered to Amare behind the back for a wide open dunk on the break. Amare was pleased with that

Jrue Holiday

just split a trap on the perimeter only to find Amare in perfect position to take the charge

Dudley

putting the ball on the floor a bit…kid as got game.

76ers are pressuring Dragic hard but he’s handling it well enough. Suns still want him to be more aggressive

This feels very

much like a regular rotation….

No Tucker. No Griffin. No Dickau or Powell

Carlos Powell

just got robbed on that call. He had a layup taken off the glass and no goal tend call…Gentry and Thunder Dan were pretty unhappy w/ that. Called a time out just to yell at the ref

Free T-shirt time. Only noise heard all night from the crowd. Lame

Suns 2nd unit

twice blew big leads in this game….that’s not going to get it done

Gentry is not a happy camper

but he is hilarious giving the refs crap

by Seth Pollack on Oct 16, 2009 10:25 PM MDT reply actions

Well this one is going down to the wire

which is what..good?

I don’t know. Suns up 111-109 w/ 38 sec. Dan Dickau is the hero by drawing a foul on a 3 and hitting all of his FT’s.

Powell could have been the hero but he missed an open corner 3 then Lou was the hero on the other end by getting the ball back. Hero time

Blogging Suns Basketball . twitter: @phoenixstan

by Seth Pollack on Oct 16, 2009 10:35 PM MDT reply actions

Dickau makes

like 5 or 6 free throws in a row to give the Suns a 4 point lead then the 76ers hit a 3. So who gets the ball? Dragic of course and he’s 0-7 shooting. But he nailed his FT’s and that should do it…

Interesting strategy. It’s ok to finish a preseason game with this lineup, but Gentry had to wait until the last 5 minutes to put them in?
And why not Griffin and Tucker? Did they play on any preseason game so far?

by troglodytes on Oct 16, 2009 10:48 PM MDT reply actions

So I guess we did fine tonight...

other than getting OWNED by Mo Speights?

By the way, Nash (+30) and Dragic (-28) was 58 points apart in +/-. I can’t recall a game in which anything close to this happened to two teammates.
