Wild suggestion: Start Jared Dudley at the 3.
I really like what I see in him. Our other options are essentially Taylor Griffin, Grant Hill and Earl Clark. Clark's pretty raw, so it seems, and has some pretty terrible shot selection. Griffin is a third unit, 13th roster spot man without question. Grant Hill, to me, seems like the only other alternative, and he's on the back side of his career. Dudley can play three positions, guard three positions, is currently leading the the whole league in preseason in steals per game and leads the team in FG% with 55% from the field. I think that's a tad more useful than 63 games out of Grant Hill. Anybody agree with me?

here's my take.
i say we start grant hill, as we’ve all seen how much his production changes when he’s starting vs. when he’s coming off the bench. not only that, but he deserves it.
and, for those games when grant either a.) takes a night off, or b.) (knock on wood) he’s injured/is sick, we start dudley.

I fully agree
He was a stud in college and is proving it now. I have no problem having him start. we need the defense (steals)

Agree
I agree, start Dudley. Hill is over the, well over the hill, it’s time to pass on the torch to the new guys who is more athletic and more hungry for success.
This isn’t going to happen though since Sarver just signed Grant Hill to another contract rolls eyes.
So silly, 3s are a dime a dozen for pete’s sake let Grant Hill go. We’ve got 5 other guys on the roster who could play the 3 at the moment, much less the glut of 6 ft 6 / 6 ft 7 guys without contracts or filling the D-League.

Dudley more athletic than Hill?

I stopped reading the post after that...
If Dudley is so much more athletic than Hill, why is it that the only footage of him dunking is in underground practice tapes and not in the game – on the fast break – or over a center?
They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...

Dudley is more athletic
Split hairs all you want guys, the case can be made that Dudley is more athletic.
Who would win in a baseline to baseline race?
Who would be able to outmuscle the other in the post?
Who would be able to play more minutes in a game at a high intensity level?
Who would be able to maintain better conditioning for a season?
So besides splitting hairs about athleticism, the point of the post was that swingmen are a dime a dozen. Dudley could do more if he were given Grant Hills minutes. What that would actually be is anybodies guess to be honest but everyone can agree he shows great promise in the limited minutes he gets.
Imagine if Jordan had been drafted by the Blazers instead of Sam Bowie. They had “Clyde the Glide” Drexler. Jordan would NOT have gotten significant minutes behind him all-star.
It’s not out of the question that in that alternate universe, he would not develop into the great MICHAEL JORDAN that he became. Fans might even have seen him as a bust, a promising prospect who looked decent in college who was warming the bench.
Bottom line: I’m saying guys need their chance to develop there are only 5 spots on the floor at a time.

That's what practice is for.
You can’t say that players don’t develop unless they get huge mins.
It’s not like the players only play 48 minutes of basketball, and that’s it. they have practice, pickup games etc… they can develop their skills in a competitve environment without the need to sponge minutes in games.
The coaches pick players based on their performance in practice, if Dudley want’s more mins at the 3, then he must prove himself to be an asset in practice, then Gentry will give him more mins.
To quote AI, "We aint’ talkin’ ‘bout the game….. we’re talkin’ ’bout practice man…. "

Good point
Good point about practice. That is how it’s supposed to work, if a guy does good in practice catches the coaches eye and gets more minutes. There are a few factors that can affect this in game situations such as an star/all-star being in front you in the rotation. Recall a few years back when the Toronto Raptors had Vince Carter AND Tracy McGrady on the same team. McGrady averaged less than 10pts per game no one expected him to be a nba superstar such as he’s become now (when he isn’t hurt that is of course).
I’m just sayin’ we’ve been seeing stories how Alando Tucker has been lighting it up in practice, summer league and D-league for the past few years. He really hasn’t gotten much NBA floor time at all. Now to save money, he is probably not going to get his contract renewed. Might he have been a good ball player for the Suns?
Ya need real floor time and significant minutes to get game experience.

I would assume that there is a reason that neither D’Antoni, Porter, or Gentry decided to give Tucker any serious mins. For all 3 coaches to pass on Alando says that although he may light it up in the summer/D league, there must be something that the coaches see which need attention before getting significant NBA mins.
I don’t know what’s gone on behind closed doors at the suns training sessions, but for all 3 coaches to come to the same conclusion kinda says that Alando must be lacking something.
That doesn’t say that Alando doesn’t find that “something” soon and become a great player, but it does imply that he’s lacking something now.

Are you crazy
I love Dudley and his hustle, but that is the prototype of a great bench/role player. Until he proves he is an overall better player (i.e. passing, shooting, IQ,) than Hill, there is no way he starts over Grant. The stats for the preseason proove something to us. Although our bench has great hustle and defense, it still has a long way to go until it prooves it can maintain what our starters are doing. They have lost the lead in almost every game. I know we are giding them lots of extra time, and they need to proove they can compete. Barbosa is the only consistent scorer we have off of the bench.
I did like what I saw out of Richardson off of the bench the other day. It was only one game, but if he could be the spark plug off of the bench that may answer some of our questions. Barbosa could start and not have to worry about playing PG. Dragic can play point, but the offense could flow through Richardson. He can create his own shot, and he can post up. He might relish the idea of being the center of the offense and really thrive. Plus he is a better rebounder than Barbs so that could help off of the bench.

The only reason
to start Dudley over Hill is to get more defense into the starting rotation and more offense into the bench unit. It’s not a bad idea but it was tried last season when Barnes started over Hill. It didn’t work mostly b/c Hill didn’t do well physically coming off the bench.
He had a hard time warming up before the game and then sitting down and cooling off and then coming back in.

J-Rich at the three
It’s happened before, and it’s time to starts Barbs. Frye, Amare, J-Rish, Barbs and Nash would deff. be undersized but would compensate with insane speed. With Dudley, Lou, Hill and my boy Tucker (break out year coming) off the bench, we have enough pieces to plug in to keep our speed going the whole game

i love alando tucker.
a lot. i think he has the poise to be a good player in the league.
the thing is, for the past two seasons, i’ve been saying, “this will be tucker’s year”, and then it never is.
sadly enough, for him to have “his year”, i think it needs to happen somewhere other than phoenix.

Start Duds Already
Coach Gentry should have given Jared Dudley a few starts in the pre-season to see how the chemistry would work on the court. Rewarding Duds with some starts would have encouraged his development and given him a chance to step-up to play a larger role in leading the franchise.
It would also help the Suns preserve Grant Hill’s legs so they are fresh for those good ol’ fourth quarter and late season runs.
Gentry should have shown some faith in Duds. the coach’s status quo moves – when it comes to the Suns forwards – marks a lost opportunityand we will may a heavy price in the months to come. Let’s start with Duds on the court when the Suns go against the Clippers to open the season on 10/28.
