Reports from Portland: Jarron Collins to the Suns
According to reports out of Portland, Jarron Collins coming to the Suns to fill in from Robin Lopez at center.
If true, he would give Phoenix a record number of brothers on any one roster. I am totally making that up but I challenge anyone to find another team that has three players on the one team who all have brothers who are also on NBA rosters. And two of them have twin brothers in the league!
How could that not be some kind of record? Just call us the Phoenix Sunsbros
At least in this case you can't argue that we got the "lesser" brother in Jarron vs Jason because frankly, they are about the same over their careers.

Here's what Basketball John from SLC Dunk had to say about Jarron. And with a name like "Basketball John" how could he be wrong?
Off the court, you'd be hard pressed to find a better guy. He's intelligent, well spoken, and is an awesome chaperone. He's a model citizen.
On the court his repertoire includes flopping and taking charges and flopping. On offense, you're not going to get anything from him. He has a high basketball IQ for what it's worth. And he'll be a good locker room guy.
He's not going to be much of a factor for you, but you probably knew that already.
Here's Jarron's career stats:

Looks pretty darn close to me.
The Suns have been saying that they would only replace Robin Lopez (who will be out until early December) with a guy that is ready to come and play. No projects allowed.
Collins with 8 years in Utah should fit that bill. A defensive big that can take up space, defend and grab some boards.
This isn't an official done deal yet so stay tuned as the story develops.

I think you can ARGUE he's the lesser brother...
You might not be right…but you can argue it. Plus it really fits for the Suns “lesser brothers” theme. That pushes it over the edge for me.

here's a highlight reel
from last season.. it only has like 4 plays tho.
Not you cannot
Arguing that Jaron is the lesser brother is like arguing that Starbury belongs in the Ring of Honor.
He’s not good, don’t get me wrong, but after having watched Jason for a while when I kept following J-Kidd on the Suns I am pretty confident that he is the worst player not only in his family, but also in the league…
well then.
we’d better hope we really do have the better brother this time
That's mildly extreme....
I’m sure that someone in his family is worse.
At least Jason has started twice as many games….meh my heart isn’t in this. It’s like arguing about which one of the Golden Girls I’d most want to hook up with.

Per 36 minutes
just to take the comparison further…let’s remember that Jason played a ton of year’s for bad Nets teams while Jarron has been in Utah (well coached one would imagine) for 8 yrs.
On a per 36 minute basis Jarron is 9.1 pts and 6.6 treb while Jason is 6.5 pts and 6.6 treb.
Jarron is about 5% better from both the field (45%) and the line (70%). I would say we got the better brother in this case!!

I'm down with the per 36 minute comparison....
But Jason Collins played 6 full years for the Nets and they made the Finals twice, the second round three times and made the playoffs the other year.
The Utah teams Jarron was on missed the playoffs three times (in 3 of his 4 highest MPG seasons). Probably didn’t help that they were playing Jarron Collins 20 minutes per game.
Sure Jason was in the watered down East…but still warrants some mention.

Okay...
Bill Wennington played six full years for the Bulls and they made the Finals three times, won the championship three times, and lost in the Eastern Conference semifinals twice.
In Jason’s busiest season (80 games played/started in 2004-05), he contributed the following numbers: 32 mpg, 6.4 pts, 6.1 reb, 41% FG, 66% FT, 4 PF/g. That’s pretty abysmal. And when those minutes continued into the playoffs, he shot just 23 percent from the field in an awful four-game sweep against the Heat.
Something tells me that just as Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, Longley, Kukoc, Harper and Kerr had much more to do with the Bulls’ success than Wennington, so too did Jefferson, Carter, Kidd, Krstic, Mourning and…gulp…Jacque Vaughn for the Nets.
Let’s just say that this argument is silly either way. This is like picking between the Rams and the Lions for which team is better in the NFL. Neither Collins will be getting more than 10 mpg for this team tops, and will likely be released with Fropez’s return.
no details yet
one can only assume he’s a free agent though at this point…he was an unsigned camp invitee to Portland after playing 8 yrs in Utah
I just wonder if the Suns are shopping Tucker. Would anyone take him at this point?

Seriously...
Tucker’s value is just plummeting…dude has some skills but just cannot get anything going EVER. I was super “high” on him early but now I am just frustrated. Get him outta here for a bigger big.
Go read a book!
It's tough
I bet Tucker could put up huge numbers in Europe somewhere but he’s just stuck at the wrong position on the wrong team.
There are just only so many minutes to go around and while you find plenty of mediocre big men (genetics being what they are) you just don’t see a lot of good but not great two’s and three’s in the league.
It’s just a numbers game.

I just dont
see him getting any time in the future. He has been passed up by high impact players like Lou and Dudley. Now he can’t have a guard position because of JRich, Nash, Barbs, and Dragic. I still think he has a good shot and can get to the rim, but he has had 3 years to prove it and still isn’t producing. Either that or the Suns aren’t willing to put the time and effort into developing him. I say ship him somewhere else to someone who does have interest.
Go read a book!
I don't think its
about time developing him. I just think he’s not been giving the opportunity to play consistently. Not his fault and not the Suns fault either.
It just is

channing frye
i think we should keep frye at center…i mean, he’s got scoring ability, he’s fast to keep up with the tempo and looks like he’s gonna fit in fine. if anything, we should lose griffin and tucker and get dickua and powell back.
and..
steve nash gets as many rebounds as this guy…steve’s career is 3.0 and jarron’s is 3.1…
Remember, we are trying to match Lopez’s production while he is out. I think the fair comparison is Collins vs. Lopez. Not necessarily that he will be fighting for time with Lopez when he’s healthy. The guy is stop gap. He may not even get into the rotation if we start fast out of the gate without needing him.

I think Channing was a great pickup for you guys
Who are now my #2 fave team in the West[I have always been a Grant Hill fan]. You need to remember that Frye is always in excellent shape but he is not good in a spot minutes role, its not an ego thing just the way he is,the more he plays the better he plays.I dont expect Collins to see any real time but I did meet his Mom once and she is a really nice lady.

The Collins brothers
are exhibit A and B that you can last 10 yrs in the league if you have this skilled called “7 feet tall.”
can't teach height
but here’s the thing
W/ no Lopez you need someone that can come in and play 10 – 15 mpg. Against centers like Bynum, Howard, Shaq, Dampier, ODen, etc you’ve got to have someone
Amundson can’t back up both Frye and Amare and Clark isn’t ready yet especially not at the NBA 4 or 5. He’s a perimeter guy right now
So you can pick from an experienced, well coached defensive player like Collins or a couple of the young guys that might be more skilled offensively but are going to need more work to fit in. Siler, Sims or Earl Barron.
The Suns showed last season w/ Stromile Swift that they prefer experienced guys for these roles

Something we are forgetting
In all the talk about brothers and twins we have forgot something. We have brothers of twins who both played for Stanford.
