Dragic-less Suns Fall to Trail Blazers in Final Preseason Game
These same two teams played last week with the Suns winning 110-104 in Portland's old Memorial Arena in a special throwback game. Last night the Blazers got their revenge beating the Suns in their second home of Vancouver, BC by the score of 113-93.
The difference between those two games was obvious. Goran Dragic. Dragic played 15 minutes and had 9 points and 5 assists in the Suns win. He was sidelined in the loss with an infected pinky toe.
Obviously, we can now put to rest any question about Goran's ability to impact the Suns chances. We now have proof positive. Same two teams play one week apart and without Dragic the Suns can't win. Case closed.
Forget about the -22 rebounding differential in the loss vs -14 in the win and ignore the fact that the Suns made 5 more three point shots last week than last night.
Those stats are the result of Dragic not playing. Obviously.

Dragic!!
Not getting rebounds didnt help either, but thats been the PHX Suns for a long time nothing new. I think they are looking forward to a little rest before the season starts and were obviously a little tired for this game. Wouldnt read too much into this one.

Ridiculous
there is nothing else that can be said. I thought that their rebounding performance was absolutely stupid. I will be less harsh on Amare because he played less minutes but he still should have had at least 5-6 rebounds. But Frye? 30+ minutes and 1 ONE!!!!! F’ing rebound?!? gimme a %^&* break!!! That is just flat out stupid basketball. I will not make excuses for a Suns team that wont (yes, I said WONT) rebound the ball. Disgraceful….

Why do you think Portland let Channing walk?
Everybody loved the guy, great character but I think the word is soft

You missed the best part
Team Leader in rebounds: Steve Nash
In fact no other Sun had more defensive ( 3 ) OR offensive (1) boards than Steve..he’s a beast!!!

Up and down
get used to it guys….to quote myself
Patience is the name of the game as there will be many nights when this team is shooting 50% from three and looks unstoppable and there will be just as many nights when they get beat by 20 on the glass and don’t look they can protect the paint at all.

Channing isn't as bad as a one reboung game would suggest
I’ve seen him play… there’s a few reasons he’s not a solid rebounder:
1) he’s not a real center. He’s tall, but he’s not big.
2) he’s always out of natural position offensively. Wanna see him hit more 3s? let him stay on the perimeter. We want this, because Amare seems to love owning the paint (one of the reasons him and Boris never worked, or even him and Shaq at times).
3) We’re a generally small team, so you can put your biggest guy on Channing and you don’t have to worry about Amare being a beast on the glass
4) Amare is his counterpart on the glass, and basically doesn’t seem to care all that much about rebounding. If he was a Tim Duncan type defensive rebounding machine, you would place your best man on him, then hope your next guy can handle Channing.
5) We never got Channing in hopes of him being a 10/10 guy. Don’t put that on him now.
6) This one is opinion, but I’ve seen him play up close, and while he’s not intense (like say Lou), he is there and he tries… (more than I can say about some other guys on the team).
Anyhow, that’s my take

BS
I buy the thing about Frye on the offensive boards. He shouldn’t have many because he should be spreading the floor and hitting 3s. But to not have ANY defensive boards is unconscionable. Dude seriously needs to get aggressive on the Dboards.

You're right, he should do better on the defensive boards
but look at the matchups. If you went tall on tall, Channing was matched up against Oden or Przybilla, both taller, and say what you will about Oden being a bust or not nearly as good a #1 pick as Kevin Durant would have been, but Oden is a solid rebounder. Aldridge is about the same build. Howard is bigger. Channing never really got a break. He’s the tallest guy we can start currently. When Robin comes back that changes, but I’m not sure I wanna see him and Channing in the frontcourt too much.
Of course, this a weakness of the team, not just Channing. Trust me, I’m not saying Channing did great, but I am saying that this is not unexpected.

I can’t believe these poll results. People, you are severely underestimating the importance of DRAGIC!

I hope the Suns don’t sign Collins, we don’t need another “big” who cannot rebound.

Dragic
Wasn’t until this game where you see how much the rotation got royally screwed with Dragic missing…. Barb had to play point(not his strong suit obliviously), and we had no other true PG in the back ups….Granted the poor rebounding didn’t help at all. I agree with post, you can see how much they actually NEED Dragic….

I agree with Stan
This team will frustrate on given nights. Channing Frye is not a NBA starter, he is what he is, a role player off the bench. Suns are going to get hammered on the boards most nights unless J-RIch and Hill really get on the glass. We have been waiting for Amare to be a consistent rebounder for years, well we are still waiting.
This will be a tough year, and will get tougher next year without a No.1 draft pick.
Look out for the bumps in the road fellas.

We should rename this
the Bright Side of the Group Fan Therapy….
but seriously…if you are already getting bent out of shape over last nights game you are in for a long long season.
I am just trying to roll with it. The reality is this team isn’t that good. They aren’t that bad either. That means some nights good. Some nights bad.

No I am not getting bent
over last nights game. I realize what this team is. If they make the playoffs Gentry should win coach of the year.
What I am bent out of shape over is no No. 1 pick next year.

yes...that
is bend worthy…
but you never know what will happen. The Nuggets didn’t have a #1 this year and managed to get Ty Lawson in the 1st round. things happen

You're Focusing on the Wrong Problem?!?
Okay, so Channing Frye can’t rebound while he is posted outside the arc waiting to hit a 3-pointer. But those rebounds – or lack thereof – wasn’t the real problem last night. No siree – baby. The real problem with Frye comes down to one word – aim.
Yes – Frye was hanging outside like a hooker waiting for an invite and neglecting those old rebounds – thus annoying many posters here.
But nailing some 3s would have made it worth the lost boards. However during his mega minutes against the Blazers, Channing did a big belly flop and missed absolutely all his long distance shots. Now if he had hit those four shots instead of throwing-up airballs, that’s 12 more Suns points and a competitive game.
Sure – we need boards – but it is okay to sacrifice them for some scoring that will open-up the court.

That's right, Channing needs to connect on 3s
but the reality is that even the best shooters have bad nights, and Channing certainly isn’t a great shooter. Nash had some horrible shooting games, but over the course of the season had solid (excellent) percentages. This is the curse of an outside shooting team: sometimes they just don’t fall.
BTW Channing is shooting 43.3% from 3pt currently. Would you care so much about one or two bad games if he shot 40 plus over the course of a season?
Oh and Steve? 37.5% currently.
Let’s see how this plays out first. Still have 82 season games to play that matter.

The last time we had a team with only 2 legitimate starters..
we got to the WCF. Difference is that team had heart. Not sure this one does.
Still, this team will win 48+ games, just because we’ll lose to the bad teams, even up with the medium teams, and beat up on all the bad teams. Won’t mean a thing, though.
