Robin Lopez undergoes surgery on broken fifth metatarsal in left foot
This sucks now they really need a big man, how long is the recovery for this???
Does anyone know who is available to temporarily fill the role? This is a huge setback, what is the Suns next move?
This sounds like a major injury he's suffered, it's hard for those guys that large to keep their feet healthy, just like Yao Ming. Hope this doesn't become a major problem.
What does everyone think?

Wow. The Suns have no center at all. Just a couple of tall forwards who can pretend to be centers.

3 weeks of the reg season, plus you figure a week or two more to get into game shape. Two months.
It doesn’t bother me a whole lot yet for some reason.
God I hope we don’t sign Ostertag or someone stupid like that.

Hey Earl Clark: Hear the door of opportunity opening wide?
by Wil Cantrell on Oct 5, 2009 3:37 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, but...
Amare can play at Center with Earl Clark at the 4 a la Amare/Marion combo…and winning as many games both regular season and in the playoffs w/ D’Antoni and Marion is a pretty successful run even if they never won it all.
by watdogg10 on Oct 5, 2009 5:03 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, but...
Marion was a rebounding machine which made Amare’s lack of rebounding less obvious, i don’t think Earl Clark has that same ability (yet).

What watdogg10 said. Didn’t mean to imply he’s a center. Meant to imply a rotation spot opens.
by Wil Cantrell on Oct 5, 2009 6:49 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I personally understood, but what if Coach Gentry wants to sign a new center for the rotation spot?

Crap
that’s about it. Just crap. We’re better off with what we have unless we can get a decent center in return in trade. That’s not going to happen unless we suck and make a trade mid-season
by SunsFTW on Oct 6, 2009 2:44 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I no longer want to trade Jason Richardson, but he’s probably the most tradeable player that they could stand to trade; the only bargaining chip.

Yeah, I don't understand it, either
It was a blown pick, let’s move on. He becomes a team option after this year, so if he can’t produce, he may be gone.

It's like that place in the Harry Potter movies
Lopez is headed straight for the Prison of Cabarkapa, where young NBA players go and never recover from their injuries.

Zarko :(
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

you didn’t think he looked good? I’ll admit that the videos are bias to only show highlight worthy plays, but it still shows what he’s capable of

Calvin Booth
What if the Suns signed Kings free agent Calvin Booth? I have no idea if he wants to re-sign with them or if they want him, but if the Suns offered him a contract, why would he go back to the Kings?

I’m thinking maybe we pick up some spare part somewhere, but Sun Tzu spends a little more time at the 5 then we thought he would.
by Wil Cantrell on Oct 5, 2009 3:40 PM MDT up reply actions 1 recs
Probably. Making a power forward pretend to be a center is an easy solution.

All-NBA First Team is pretty successful
by hcblankscreen on Oct 5, 2009 6:18 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed. I don’t think Amare is any worse at the 5 than he is at the 4. Most 4’s are more athletic than 5’s. Amare posterized many a slow footed center.
On defense, he’ll probably be below average regardless.
by Wil Cantrell on Oct 5, 2009 6:52 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Stoudemire's defense
Speaking of Stoudemire on defense, have we had any reports or evidence from training camp that he wants to play good defense, like Jason Richardson? If he fails on defense this season but made an effort, fine; but if he doesn’t even try, we should be disgusted. With no Raja Bell or Shawn Marion, and not even Shaquille O’Neal there to play his just-by-being-there defense, we need Stoudemire to play defense more than ever.
by species8473 on Oct 5, 2009 6:59 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
We have evidence
that it’s still pretty bad. Sweet Lou went for 21 points in the scrimmage with Amare guarding him… haha

Chris Mihm?
We did look at him in 2007. Nothing is appealing though.

This can take much much longer depending on if they have to insert a screw and what not
Channing’s teammate Martell Webster was out all year after re-aggravating it in a game against the Raptors in December or so after he had suffered it just around this time in the first pre-season game. Good luck to Robin. Go Channing.

For once I'm optimistic
I have a question: Are the Suns forced to sign another player? I think not, but I have doubts. If the answer is NO I’m pretty sure they will not sign anyone. It is logical, there are no good players available (cheap), and if finally The Suns sign a role player (a vet who doesn’t want any other team) probably will not play any minute.
I rather think that is an immense opportunity for Clark to have quality minutes (at 4, not at 5), and be able to develop his game.
6-8 weeks is not too long because fortunately there are still 3-4 weeks to start the season, so the importance of this lesion is relative..
The approximately 20’ that Lopez was going to play will be divided between Lou, Clark and Frye.
by matrix7 on Oct 6, 2009 10:34 AM MDT reply actions 1 recs
I agree
this is unfortunate and if anything delays Robin’s development but the impact to the team should be minimal and I certainly don’t think the Suns will sign another player unless things look like they are going to take longer for Lopez’ return

The Suns wont do anything unless Robin’s out for an extended period of time.

Alando Tucker
Earl Clark getting minutes at the wrong position could open an opportunity for Alando Tucker. He’s not going to get much of one at shooting guard.
by species8473 on Oct 6, 2009 11:19 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
That might be a good thing
I think If Alando was seven feet tall, he’d be a beast.

i still think he's a beast.
and, he did play down low for much of his college career. he’s got the whole rebounding and post play thing down.
i’d like to see him play the three (not starting of course), clark at the four, amar’e at the five.
by iamtrevorpaxton on Oct 6, 2009 3:51 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Grant Hill
Me too, but how would Tucker play ahead of Grant Hill? If Clark isn’t at SF, I would expect Hill to be there unless he’s resting. (Which would be fine with me.)

that's also why i said (not starting, of course).
i don’t expect him to play ahead of grant hill.
i think the lopez-less rotation should look something like this:
PG: nash, dragic, barbosa
SG: richardson, barbosa, tucker
SF: hill, dudley, clark, tucker
PF: amar’e, amundson/clark
C: frye, amar’e, amundson
by iamtrevorpaxton on Oct 6, 2009 5:06 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
At one point
in the last pre-season game, Earl Clark was the Center… biggest guy out there at the time.
We were playing Dragic, Barbosa, Dudley, Carlos Powell, and Earl. I don’t think it’ll happen much in the regular season though ;)
by SunsFTW on Oct 8, 2009 11:24 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Take Powell out of that equation
and replace him with Hill, and that is a lineup I can definitely see in the second quarter of games.

Carlos Powell
This Powell doesn’t have a chance, does he? Shoot, I don’t even know his position.
by species8473 on Oct 8, 2009 12:34 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
take powell out of that location
and then replace dudley at the four, and hill at the three, and i can definitely see that scenario happening in the second quarter of games.
