All praise Steve Kerr: Genius not Moron!

All praise Steve Kerr:  Genius not Moron!

Star-divide

This fan post is where we can all eat crow, myself included, for all the Kerr-bashing we've been doing the past couple years.   This will be awkward for a lot of us.  When Steve Kerr traded Shawn Marion for Shaquille O’Neal, he bluntly proclaimed that history would either see him as a genius or a moron for making the deal.   With the early success the Suns have had, it seems like we don't have to label him a genius or moron for that deal alone.   The Terry Porter Experiment didn't work out so well, so Kerr cut his losses (and his buddy Porter).

This year Steve has got the Suns the best bench the team has had in many years.  The team is also tied for the best record in the league.   Yes it's early and we are probably one Steve Nash injury away from the lottery but the early returns are promising, very promising indeed for this Suns team.    Now's everyone's chance to hop on the *gulp* "We Love Steve Kerr!" bandwagon!

"All aboard!!!"

Not yet

Robin Lopez vs Marrese Speights
Earl Clark vs Jrue Holliday
DeJuan Blair vs a boxful of used jockstraps (should have gotten Cavspick in Shaq trade)

Also, until we blow out the Mavs, I am not judging the Shaq expirement. Trix and Howard starting together look frightening from here in Dallas, and I am soooo looking forward to the Matrix guarding Amare. He thinks he can shut him down.

I would like to see that also but,

I don;t recall that happening last year. Terry is pretty quick.

The funny thing is that with Durant blowing up to be a great leader, and Oden yet to prove that he’s much more than an average centre, they might have just done it again…. :)

you could be right.

Sam Bowie was a very good center but could not shake the injury bug. Is Oden going down the same road?

Is the Matrix playing?

We havn’t heard much from Shawn since he left Phoenix. He and D Wade were supposed to be a big thing in Miami. Shawn was hurt and didn’t play much. Then Shawn was with another team, Toronto? He and Chris Bosh sounded pretty good. Then Shawn is with another team at a ridiculous salary. He and Kurt and Howard are supposed to be a big deal. Then Shawn is injured again.
Do you see a pattern here?

Shawn Marion is starting at small forward for the Mavericks.

He’s earning 6.6 million this year. So in other words, Shawn is contributing for another team at a very reasonable price.

5 yrs 39 million according to the news releases.

Don’t get me wrong, athletes and entertainers have a small window of time to earn as much as possible. I’m all for them maxing out on their contracts. Would Marion still be in Phoenix if the numbers were a little lower? He gave his all when he was with the Suns and was a terrific fan favorite. The salary cap and lux tax have caused a lot of players with old long term contracts to ‘keep their bags packed’. This might continue if the cap is lowered again. What chance to you think Shawn has of collecting the entire 39 million from the Mavs?

by da suns on Nov 21, 2009 10:50 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, I'd guess not much

The deal is backloaded so he’ll be making 8.5-9.5 million or so, 3-4 years from now. I have a feeling he’ll become something of a hot potato in about 2 years. Most of it depends on how well he ages in the next couple of years.

Earl Clark vs Jrue Holliday? DeJuan Blair vs Burger King?

I’d say you were a little early to judgment on this one. This will not be clear for at least a few years. As for DeJuan Blair, the jury is still out. Blair is too small for this position and is already starting to put on weight after reporting in good shape. His playing time looks like it is being cut from the three times I have seen the Spurs play this year. Blair was a good college player who was out of shape his entire career. Can he develop the discipline needed to remain in the NBA? As a GM, I would not want that problem with my first round pick. Can you say Oliver Miller? Shawn Marion shutting down Amare? LOL

by da suns on Nov 21, 2009 10:03 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Except...

Blair was a 2nd round pick. So if you were RC Buford (the Spurs GM who drafted him), it was a low-investment, high-upside pick. I agree the jury is still out on most rookies until we’ve seen them play a full season, however Blair was a tremendous value pick.

The Spurs got a potential rebounding champ who’s salary will barely crack $1M in his 4th NBA season. And if he doesn’t pan out, the Spurs are only out $1.7M over 2 years which is chump change for an NBA franchise.

Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa

by Mike Lisboa on Nov 21, 2009 12:00 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

However,

The Suns would have had to take him with their lottery pick. San Antonio took Blair at number 37 and he was their initial selection in the draft since they did not have a first round pick. The Suns did not pick until number 48 in the second round (the other Griffin).
I sincerely hope that Blair does well in the NBA. He is starting to rack up DNPs. There is no question that he can rebound. His stamina is a problem. My question to you is this. Why take a player who is small for his position and has demonstrated that he is not interested in being in top shape? Do you really think that DeJuan Blair is a potential rebounding champ? Last I looked, he was listed at 6’7" in height. Has the NBA had a rebounding champ at that height in the last ten years? At the combine he was measured at 6’5.25". I know, he has long arms. If Blair pans out, he will represent value. If not, then there is no value. His contract can be filed along with my Enron stock certificate.
The Spurs have one of the best organizations in the league so you have to respect their choice but they are not immune to making errors(Barbosa). They do have similar money problems to the other smaller market teams so I can see why they might take a chance on a player like Blair who was orginally listed as a first round pick. $1.7 million= chump change? That is part of the problem.

by da suns on Nov 21, 2009 2:22 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

DeJuan Blair is a potential rebounding champ

“Last I looked, he was listed at 6’7” in height. Has the NBA had a rebounding champ at that height in the last ten years?" Charles Barkely, retired in 2000, was somewhere between 6 ft 4 to 6 ft 6 and a prolific rebounder. Rodman was 6 ft 8 and led the league in rebounding a record seven consecutive years.

I hope you can see from Amare that height is not what it takes to be a good rebounder. It can somewhat be taught but you have to have the instincts and discipline that comes naturally for some and not for others to get rebounds. It’s like shooting free throws or whatever, everyone COULD do it , but some excel while others not so much no matter how much training you throw at them (couch shaq).

So you guys say Blair sucks and is out of shape, I say get his butt out on the court and sweat it off at 40 minutes a game. He will be in shape in a month.

+1000

I would like to see where this Suns team would be if any of these armchair GM’s were handed the reins. This team, regardless of their final record, has been completely architected by Kerr. Not even the most optimistic of Suns fans thought they would be where they are. At least for now, give the man his due. Do you think we’d be in the same position we’re in if we still had Boris and Raja?

by Silkster on Nov 12, 2009 12:09 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Not a chance

Dudley=antithesis of Diaw. One guy loaded with talent but one of the laziest players in the league vs guy with minimal talent but one of the hardest working. I’ll take duds and his 2mil over Diaw and his 8mil any day of the week. And he flat out plays him anyway. here are the per 48 minutes stats

Duds: 20 ppg 7.7 rpg 3.1 apg 2.9 steals. 48% fg 44% 3pg 60% adjusted
Diaw: 16 ppg 7.6 rpg 5.9 apg 1.7 steals. 44% fg 27% 3pg 48% adjusted

So, now the numbers speak for what we already knew. Dudley>Diaw

As for JRICH vs Bell. Rich is at least as equivalent on offense as Bell was on defense and much younger. Rich provides same deadeye 3pg% as Bell plus a lot more of his own moves and athleticism.

Plus this deal gives us a bit more youth to work with. We already have Nash and Hill. To add bell to the starting lineup would make us very old.

Good deal

by Suns Fan For Life on Nov 12, 2009 1:30 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

That trade is a winner. Of course we are paying almost 15 mill for JRich.

by Hawk42 on Nov 12, 2009 2:04 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

actually

we’re only paying 13.3 for him this year and only 14.4 for him next year… if he keeps playing like he has been and putting up big numbers when he needs to I have no complaint… I’d rather pay the ≈ 600k more that we’re paying for both JD and JR who both put up consistent minutes and off the charts effort in stead of gritting through the inconsistencies of both Bell and Diaw.

Plus – we’d still be stuck possibly with Diaw’s sweet contract through the next two years.. JRich’s contract is up next year.

They say "don't swim with the sharks", but I'm faster than sharks so it's not a big deal...

by Eutychus on Nov 12, 2009 4:01 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Only 13.3 million and only 14.4 million for J Rich?

By any measure that you might imagine, JRich is not performing like a player making that kind of money. Dudley is a steal at whatever small amount he is getting paid, but he is an undersized player at his position and that will eventually be to his and the team’s disadvantage. On the matter of Diaw, he will bounce around the league for a few more seasons and make little impact. We are lucky that he is GONE. I do miss Raja Bell. When right (not injured) he was as tough a defender as you could find.

by da suns on Nov 21, 2009 9:31 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

On Bell

I don’t know about you but everytime I saw Bell running fast breaks I felt scary… that he might miss a layup or get blocked from behind… which he usualy did.

+1

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

Kerr

Got to give Kerr his due, this team is exceeding expectations. Hindsight is 20/20 on a lot of the moves he’s made . Hell foresight was 20/20 on a lot of the moves he made.

Through it all he’s somehow engineered the Suns team that is playing great basketball and far exceeding lottery/8 seed expectations that everyone was expecting the Suns to perform at is is all I’m sayin’.

Right now, he is no better than Bill Frieder. Oh, and that point guard he passed up to draft Earl Clark? Scored 24 points against the Cavs (Eric Maynor).

though i think maynor could be the real deal. too bad.

though! goran has been exceeding expectations so far this year. a serviceable backup, which is all we need at this point. who knows, he might even improve enough to be a solid NBA starter? but for now…i’ll take baby steps from the kid.

Agreed Eagleheart.

Everyone needs to start giving Kerr credit. I for one have always liked Kerr and thought he was doing a good job. It’s finally paying off. Those who just want to bitch and moan all day should go somewhere else. It’s pathetic.

Kerr is a genius?

Not quite yet. This team is 10-3 on the season and looks like they could get the 4TH seed but most likely the 5TH seed in the West. The hot start is most welcome but do we really expect the team to win 70% of their games this year? Kerr’s latest pick, Earl Clark is not NBA ready. He will sit most of the year. Don’t forget about the choice of Terry Porter and the trade for Shaq. These are monumental blunders and cost the team a place in the playoffs last season. That playoff failure caused the team to miss a lot of revenue. That missed revenue effected the makeup of this years team. Perhaps we would have been able to sigh a veteran point guard as a back up to Steve Nash.
Steve Kerr appears to be a bright guy and he has learned from his mistakes. I think he did a nice job of putting together this team on a very limited budget. The 10-3 start gives us fans hope and has created a lot of interest. The Suns have caught a break this year. Let’s hope it lasts the season.
