Sorry!
Sorry it took so long to get the Game Thread up if you’ve felt orphaned for the last 30 minutes.

If I were not a Suns fan, I would probably be a Nuggets fan. I love this roster.

Afflalo on Nash - Called it!
Leaving Nash on Billups… not so much. Look for Denver to exploit that sooner rather than later.

Hey, rest of Suns!
Steve Nash would like to win this game.

Denver getting into some foul trouble as well…And Anthony hasn’t really touched the ball
Anyone else want to make a shot?
Bueller? Bueller?

Ah, you see what happened there?
Denver remembered the Suns can’t defend.

Oh, Channing
Some day you’ll make it out of the first quarter with less than 2 fouls.
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
Nice D by PsychLo there
And fearsome dunks by Amare and J-Rich!
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
now THAT was nice
surprisingly good D from Lopez, usual good pass from Nash, and the closer from JRich
Suns just got legit stops on 2 out of 3 plays.
How does they celebrate? TURNOVER!
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
OK, they did also get the J-Rich dunk.
I’ll stop mocking the Suns’ D when they deliver it for more than one quarter per game.

I’m actually sure you’ll be right and we will be blown out. But I couldn’t watch the Suns in the last days and I missed them.
BTW, great article about Nash ;)

Fun fact!
Robin Lopez averages 1 foul every 3:54 of floor time. Already has 1 in 2 minutes tonight.
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
He's not satisfied with that.
Now has 2 fouls in 3:16. Going for some kind of record.
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
THREE
It’s either a sad thread or Robin is terrible. 3 fouls in 3:46. You can only hope to contain his suck.
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
He may not be terrible but he's certainly not good.
Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."
Anyway...
Can you win a title when your starting bigs are “please score on me” Amar’e and “Softer than silk” Frye?

He's average.
Not great on ball, but surprisingly active. He does lots of little things that don’t show up in the box score, but he occasionally bricks the ones that do.
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
Too skinny now
But in theory, yes. Except no. He’s too skilled and mobile to be a true center.

62% shooting
is the great shooting making the defenders work harder, or is it caused by the great defense?

I would say the defense is feeding the offense, but on the Suns it tends to go the other way.

I think that the defense is definitely feeding the offense so far. Many of the suns points have come in transition because the nuggets haven’t been able to get back on D.
This is the best defense we've played all year :o
And our bench! Oh my. I hope we don’t have a massive collapse.

i’d rather the Lakers beat up on the other Western Conference teams….cuz there is no way, barring an injury to Kobe, that they aren’t gonna be the #1 seed and we could use the help

That's a very logical and rational position.
But my hatred of the Lakers overrides it. I view Utah as part of the Resistance(along with every other non Lakers/Spurs team this decade).

Why is no one asking why Alvin Gentry didn't call a time-out?
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
Because they got a wide open layup where Steve Nash was clearly fouled?
You don’t get a better shot then what they got with a time-out.

mike…. that was about 2 quarters of bs…. it’s not like the Suns gave up… but when refs are blatently making calls like that…. where is the “game” part of it… I don’t recall the rule book saying anything like “if you are wearing a nuggets jearsy you win!”
TO THE NBA - " Yeah, you have created a rift within me ; Now there have been ; several complications ; that have left me feeling nothing ; I might say, you were ; wrong to take it from me ; Left me feeling nothing " - Disturbed, "Numb"
because
it didn’t matter it was clear that the refs where not going to let the suns win.
TO THE NBA - " Yeah, you have created a rift within me ; Now there have been ; several complications ; that have left me feeling nothing ; I might say, you were ; wrong to take it from me ; Left me feeling nothing " - Disturbed, "Numb"
Nash couldn't believe it.
But it WASN’T just that ridiculous no call. It was the joke of a call charging on Stat, etc. AND on the other end they called every ticky tack on us in the 3rd and 4th. This is the kind of game that supports the thesis of my Fanpost “Where’s the Beef…”
I fail to see how the refs "winning" the game for the Nuggest supports...
…a thesis in which the NBA helps the Lakers.
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
I was replying to Mike about how this result helps the Lakers.....
Both in Pacific Division. Suns loss helps Lakers as well as hurting Suns. The point is that the way this game was called was obviously not kosher. There could be ALOT of explanations why, but it was definitely not kosher !
OK, but wouldn't it have been SO MUCH EASIER...
for the refs to, you know, “help” the Lakers win their game against Utah? I suppose the refs also forced 20 Suns turnovers? Held 3 starters to 11-28 shooting? Collected 15 offensive rebounds for the Nuggets?
Contributor: Bright Side of the Sun Twitter: @MikeLisboa
I get what you are saying Mike...
But you also have to say that bad reffing CAN contribute to a team having 20 turnovers. Also, if players get it in their heads that the refs arent allowing certain things it forces them to take shots they are not comfortable with. I didnt see the game, only listened. But what you are saying, while it has merit, is not entirely accurate. But I get your point…
Go read a book!
offensive fouls are turnovers....
no calls end up being turnovers. so yes they did.

I get them blowing charging/blocking calls because there’s so much that you have to take into account, but Nene had his arm around Nash’s and his hand on Nash’s chest from when he picked up his dribble and took his shot.

If there is anything to take solace in,
it is the fact that—based on this game alone—we are at least as good as, if not better than the Nuggets. I actually think that were this a fairly officiated game, we would definitely have beaten this team (not a blowout, but we would have beaten them). The refs completely shifted the momentum over to the Nuggets, on many, many unfair calls. I am not saying this was done deliberately, but it shouldn’t matter. So many incorrect judgments on the “officiators” is completely unacceptable. There needs to be some accountability. I am so sick of these incompetent refs deciding games.

I agree…but…quite simply…it’s nothing new…but many of the games I watch seem to be called pretty well…then there’s games like this…where you have to think either 1 of the 2 is happening
1. the refs want one team to win
2. the refs are just horrible
I don’t believe it’s 2.
by be-the-ball on Dec 12, 2009 9:54 PM MST reply actions 1 recs
Its pretty clear
that some refs want games to be close. They want good games at the end and end up calling things a certain way more often in order to make that. The problem is, when the game comes down to the wire, all those bad calls add up and often give the game to the less deserving team.
Go read a book!
mike and others have strong ties in the nba
I don’t think they’d ever cry “fix”.
But it wouldnt surprise me if a fix is happening here and there…it’s about money…
Such a shame…it’s why I love the suns but watch with half a heart….meaning I’d go crazy if I cared with a whole heart…..for the nba to suspend a player who’s on the edge of the court..because he’s concerned about a teammate that just got thrown down/run over…seriously…there’s a reason why the main guy in the nba..David Stern looks like a unisex….it’s the universe’s way of trying to equalize some of the wrong things going on…with that said…there’s still a ton of great things happening…
Lou getting 9 rebounds in the first half says a lot….it also says a lot about amare not getting rebounds…quite simply…he isn’t consistently hungry for rebounds…
Nash & Dudley’s play, Hill…you have to feel good about some things…

ok...thanks for response
it just seems pretty clear that other sports don’t have this “refs” thing (meaning refs blow calls…so often that you can’t help but think it’s not all out of incompetence)…for god’s sake…some have been convicted of cheating!!!…other refs that are out of control have been rehired…i think crawford was a ref the other night…the mysterious 1.9 back on the clock..
My question then to you is this..
How do you explain the lack of calls that are often so obvious? and not get mad?
I’m also a strong suns fan…I’ve been one since the late 70’s early 80’s. As an elementary school student at Hopi in Arcadia, we’d get to go to a Suns game as a school trip once in a while…it was awesome. But…I will not go insane and be so frustrated around my family because of the unfairness that continues in the nba….but I love the Suns and basketball too much to not often watch. So…when I watch…I see it without the “fan” bias…I see stuff just as it appears….an it appears that often the nba is crooked. I don’t think there’s some big conspiracy theory where they know who is going to win each game…but I do think that some games are likely heavily bet upon…and that refs help the odds for one team or another…how else do you explain the calls?
It can’t be incompetence…because if it was…it’d be consistent….it’s like a different set of rules based on
1. whose the home team (often)
2. is it the end of the game (and is it close)
I remember seeing Nash get mauled by kobe without a call and then score and win a game against the suns in the playoffs a while back…they keep showing the clip of kobe scoring and winning the game on tv, what they dont show is the “kobe fouling nash so blantantly that it might as well be football”.
the list of “bad calls” is a mile long. And it’s not a case of me being a Suns fan and not being happy…
take for instance the mavs…I’m not a fan of the Mavs…but when they went to the finals and were up 2 games to 0 vs the heat, and cuban went on tv (tonight show i think) and came across pretty cocky….then all of a sudden the heat come back and win…and wade gets to shoot something like 40 free throws in one game….it was simply ridiculous…and I’m not a fan of either team…but it was very very very obvious that the nba (stern…whomever else has the power) didn’t want cuban to win…do you agree?
by be-the-ball on Dec 12, 2009 11:57 PM MST up reply actions
There were a lot of really weird calls (both ways) and no consistency
One play they’d let ’em bang a little and swallow their whistles, the next second they were calling touch fouls.
Kinda unrelated, but I absolutely hate it when refs just plain don’t call anything at the end of the game. It may seem anticlimactic to call a travel or a foul on the last play of the game, but a football game has never been ruined been any less exciting by a late pass-interference call.

We got some calls in the first half....BUT....
the Nuggets got a whole SLEW of calls, in fact, every pivotal call down the stretch that wasn’t obviously a Denver foul. The refs GAVE THIS GAME TO DENVER. Plain and simple.
And THAT is why Gentry got two technical fouls !!
He was watching the same thing we were and he was PISSED ! And you know what; I don’t blame him — If I had been coaching I would have gotten 2 T’s long before the Nash no call.

Hey guys
How bad was this foul on Nash? I didn’t get a chance to watch the game and all (exams) but from what I am seeing on twitter and here it sounds like it was bad.
It wasn't the foul on the shot
It was the foul on the drive…just bumped and jostled the whole way

i rewinded the play a few times and it looks like nene was riding nash pretty hard all the way
should have definitely been a foul
Since there's no recap yet, i'll post this here but....
Here’s what the Denver Stiffs had to say about the game…
Stiff of the Night (a new feature in my game recaps!)…
…Suns head coach Alvin Gentry. With two seconds remaining, the Suns down two and Melo on his way to the line for two potential seal-the-deal free throws, Gentry decides that’s the time to erupt on the referees and get himself thrown out for the (correct) non-foul call on Nene when Nash drove to the rack on the prior possession. Had Melo missed one of those two free throws (very likely), the Suns would have had time to make a game-tying three if they corralled the rebound.
So..
1. He uses a new feature to try to call out Gentry
2. He says that Nash wasnt fouled at all on his end of the game drive.
and 3. He says that it was “very likely” for Carmelo to miss 1 of the 2 free throws at the end of the game (he ended up making 4. 2 from the T’s and 2 from the foul.. not to mention he’s an 87% free throw shooter this season)
Eh...
It’s very easy to bring up all of these scenarios once the game is over. Maybe Gentry chose the wrong time to lose his shit (well, he did), but you can also look at it as the ultimate act of standing up for his team when they were wronged.
Bringing up all of these bat shit scenarios is silly when the most likely scenario is the foul being called and Nash tying the game with two FTs.
Bottom line: we lost an insanely close game against a supposedly “superior” opponent when we should have been run over, great effort from our guys.

Again, completely unrelated but...
Does anybody else find it completely riidiculous to see journalists and analysts straight up bullshitting their way through their jobs? I know I’m sounding like a homer here but that no-call on Nash’s drive was insane, yet in all of the recaps and post game analysis they make it sound like the Suns were begging for a phantom call.. Even the players and coaches act like it never happened.
The system is straight up bull and it all boils down to the way the refs are handled.

CHECK THE REPLAY
watch it like six or seven times like i just did. You’ll see Nene’s arm on Nash, you’ll see Nene NOT impede the progress of Nash, you’ll see Nash push off TWICE. Good no call, if anything it was an offensive foul. Good game, you gave us a scare but come on, saying that was an obvious foul or that Nene mugged Nash is complete homerism
How about when the ball obviously went out of bounds off of Nene and you guys got it?
How about the flop calls for Denver that resulted in TO’s?
How about Dudley getting contact on a layup with no call? Shit how about Dudley being most wanted on the officiating staff tonight?
How about the obvious change in officiating in the second half?
As a Denver fan you should be upset this game was even winnable by the Suns.
The fact that we even gave you a scare should make you vomit. You are the team that ESPN kneels down and sucks as one of the only teams that can challenge the Lakers in the west yet your team couldn’t handle the lowly Suns, the old Suns, the overrated Suns after they just played the night before at 8:30pm AZ time then came to the mile high city in the AM, barley slept yet competed with your team?
Try to not be a homer yourself my friend.
I don’t use the officiating excuse often but face it, If it had been Kobe, Billups, Wade, LeBron they would have gotten that call. To not give it to a 2 time MVP is like a kick in the balls to anyone rooting for their team.
+1
And even if Kobe, Anthony, Wade, or Lebron hadn’t been given the call, the media definitely would have brought it up in all of their articles. I wouldn’t be surprised to see headlines like “Kobe snubbed, Nuggets steal one from Lakers”
The Nash play WAS a foul, but that wasn't even the most obvious screwing by refs....
Amare got hit big time, was fouled going to the basket at the end of the 3rd quarter and nothing was called. Stat is a good free-throw shooter so that ridiculous non-call likely took 2 pts away from the Suns.
There were a SLEW of another non-calls/blown calls including a phantom charge on Amare when Nene totally flopped, a BS block call on Dudley when he got run over, the Hill block call which gave Billups two free-throws etc (this call I felt was a toss-up actually, could have gone either way, but of course Denver got the pivotal call). I mean, it had to have been at least 10 pts the refs either took away from Phoenix or gave Denver — without that BS the Suns win this game fairly easily by 7-8 pts. Down the stretch Denver would have been hucking up 3’s and fouling the Suns etc,
I thought this game was a pretty clear example of maniupulation by refs…..
i can watch/listen to 30 games and I wouldnt say what you just said above...but
+1…your right…sadly :-(
