Game Preview: Suns vs Celtics
I hope to add more to this preview later in the day but in the mean time feel free to drop your own thoughts in the comments and be sure to check out all the great Celtics blogs out there:
Points of Emphasis Against Phoenix Tonight - CelticsBlog
The Celtics are in a difficult position right now, with a very good Phoenix Suns team that's already beaten Boston once this season on tap tonight. The C's would love to right the ship against Phoenix, but they need to be extremely careful with the Suns because they're perfectly capable of trapping an opponent into its style of play - even a team like the Celtics which prides itself on its defensive mindset. If the Celtics aren't cautious and play the sloppy basketball they displayed on Monday against the Warriors, they could find the game escaping their grasp early on.
and I will be calling in to a Blog Talk Radio show put on by the good people at Red's Army at 630pm AZ Time. Check me out.

Tonight at 8, we're doing a pre-game version of The 2 Man game. We'll be joined by Phx Stan from Bright Side of the Sun. He's going to be at the game as a credentialed member of the media (a credentialed blogger? Huh... what a nice idea)... so we'll get a pre-game report from him. So go to our show page and tune in at 8pm.
It looks like the C's will be without Baby Davis as well as Pierce

Big Baby is not participating in today's shootaround, he's out for tonight's game vs. Phoenix and is considered day-to-day.

The Suns' success rides on their ability to avoid turnovers, particularly against a strong Celtics defense that has opponents averaging 16.7 turnovers per game (third in the NBA). This month, Phoenix is making 12.3 turnovers in their wins and 17.1 in their losses. "When we play that efficiently, we do have the ability to play against the really elite teams," Suns coach Alvin Gentry said - KTAR.com - Dudley's role keeps increasing
Suns forward Jared Dudley was already a fan favorite in Phoenix, but lately has also become the team's best option off the bench. - Stories at ktar.com - Slowing down Rondo is the key versus the C's| Valley of the Suns
Slowing down Rajon Rondo will be a huge key for the Phoenix Suns against the Boston Celtics, who struggle from three-point land. - Mapping the NBA: Inside Out -- NBA FanHouse
Teams should clearly prefer shots at the rim and from beyond the arc as opposed to all other locations. It's not always that easy -- every team tries to get dunks and lay-ups, but some players are far more adept at getting them (for themselves and teammates). But clearly, some teams settle for two-point jumpers too frequently, given the efficiency spread. - Celtics vs Suns coverage

The Celtics lost their last two games to the Clippers and Warriors. You better believe they are going to want to get a win tonight in Phoenix

Bigger Test Than the Laker Game?
Beating the Lakers was definitely a mental hurdle the Suns needed to clear in order to take that next step towards really being a contender. A great win for sure but tonight is going to be far tougher. If there is one thing you can say about the KG-led Celtics, it’s that they are a prideful team who will sorely want to avenge their recent poor losses with a solid win against a good team. The C’s will bring their best tonight so the Suns better be prepared for an extremely talented, versatile team with their backs against the wall(or so I am sure they are spinning it after two bad losses).
The Suns do however matchup fairly well with the Celts. For Rondos defensive wizardry we have Nash’s offensive wizardry. For KG we have Amare. For the Celts 5 who can shoot threes(’Sheed) we have one of our own(Frye). For Pierce… Richardson. You get the point. The one difference is that the Celts play better team D.
Prediciton: Celtics 104, Suns 101
Pierce is out for this game
So I’m guessing Marquis will start at the 3. Despite a good defender and a reasonable offensive threat, he’s no Pierce. I think it’ll be a good matchup for the Suns. Only Rondo might ruin it, but if JRich is healthy he’s able to destroy the C’s as he’s so used to do.
Daniels is out as well
he had surgery on his thumb.

The Eutychus Scoop
Injuries will be a major factor and the story of this game.
AT THE THREE
- Paul (the dirty truth) Pierce is out with his knee problem. – This is great news for us, especially in the 4th Quarter when the C’s usually shift into “give-it-to-Pierce-and-get-the-beep-out-of-the-way” mode. The Celtics have lost both games so far that Pierce has missed.
- Marquis Daniels, Pierce’s back up – is also out after having thumb surgery on his left hand.
With both Pierce and Daniels out at the 3 spot, that leaves only Red Rocket Scalabrine as the true 3 to come in and try to contain Hill and Dudley. Of course, 6’-5" Ray Allen will undoubtedly switch over and try his best as well – but that is a favorable match-up for 6’-8" Hill or even JRich who went off for 34 points and 10 rebounds shooting nearly 63% from the field in the Suns epic win over the C’s at the garden.
AT THE FOUR
- Glen (big temper tantrum) Davis – is out with a sprained ankle sustained in Moday’s game v. the warriors. He will just have to be mean and have ‘no fun’ on the bench with the scrubs tonight.
- Kevin Garnett just hasn’t been the same old Garnett as of late and currently he is playing with a banged up leg and is a game-time decision for Rivers
With Davis out and KG questionable I’m looking for Amare to have a beastly night. With so many bigs out of the equation for the C’s the Suns should look to drive and pound the paint at every opportunity. Both Perkins and Wallace are still very potent defenders and shot blockers, but without the court security of Davis/Pierce/Daniels and possibly KG I will bet they will be very hesitant to challenge every shot or drive tonight in a conscious effort to avoid foul trouble not to mention protect against the Suns floor spacing. So I say ATTACK. Attack, attack, and attack some more. If we can get just one of their bigs into early foul trouble we will increase our chance for domination substantially.
- Rajon Rondo is also battling a minor hamstring injury he suffered in the Monday loss to GS – though he still managed to drop 30 something…
With all of these injuries captain obvious says the Celtics are in bad shape… and I haven’t touched (and I won’t) on all the great things the Suns are doing. The bottom line is this – last year the world saw the Celtics collapse due to the shanking of team morale and confidence caused by KG’s injury, and I think they are facing the same demon currently. They are 0-2 with their captain Pierce out with those losses coming against sub-par (yet extremely athletic) teams. They will undoubtedly try to will themselves to a victory tonight against the Suns in an attempt to salvage their 4 game road trip… but I don’t see it happening. The Celtics are just too weak currently to handle the Suns. Our bench is too deep – we space the floor too well – Beep Beep is back – Steve Nash is too good – Amare has officially returned from injury – Dudley is a sniper – Frosty is fearless – and it rains 3’s in Phoenix. Good luck green team… you’ll need it.

Here's
the CelticsBlog scoop on the Status of KG and Rondo for tonight. We need to come out and play just as hard as the Lakers game and shove this game down their throats.

If that's the case...
The Suns have to be careful because this could turn into a trap game a la Suns vs Lakers last season without Nash.
By the way, if anyone’s interested I have an artwork showdown running in honor of tonight’s game featuring Amare and KG here.
You're a great artist.

Just one win
Just like the Laker game, this only counts for one win. And if it means we get it because they’re dressing 8 players, it’s just one more notch in the W column. But I agree with watdogg: the Suns need to come out and play hard early so the C’s never have a chance.
