Trade of the day - Amare to Sactown for Hawes and Udrih
This morning I talked with Tom Ziller of Sactown Royalty (and many other places) for the pregame podcast which will be coming soon.
I got to playing with the trade machine as a result of the conversation and came up with this deal:
Amare and Dragic for Hawes, Kenny Thomas and Beno Udrih and a first round pick.
For Phoenix - we get a legit backup PG that could potentially even be a starter on a good team and is certainly an upgrade from LB at the point. In Hawes you get a young big man that can play the power forward next to Shaq (he can shoot a bit) and also play center without him. He's probably never going to be an all-star but could with Lopez some day provide for a nice front line. Kenny Thomas is a power forward with a big contract ($8m / yr) that is thrown in to make the numbers work. His deal expires after next season so while he's a drag on the cap it's only for one more year and in fact he might just be valuable next season as an expiring contract for someone (or us).
For Sactown - they get an All Star big man that will put buts in seats and reenergize their fan based. They would be seriously hurting for a point guard but they don't seem to think Udrih is a starter anyway so they were going to address that regardless.

Urrrgh!
Don’t like this too much…Udrih has a pretty terrible contract bearing in mind he’s nothing more than a backup at best. Hawes has potential though and at least could contribute right away.
Would be amusing watching Amar’e dragging his arse around the court is Sacto though. Lets see him make the All Star game when no one’s watching his games.
Suns making a move..
I have a big feeling a trade/release is coming to someone on the team.. I’m not sure whats going to happen but something is this year before the end of the All Star Break
The only Suns fan from Boston!
Maybe
Salmons, Hawes and Udrih seems like a lot to give up for Amare – especially when there’s no guarantee he will stay past 2010. Salmons also has a longer term deal and is 30 so I am not sure we would want him as part of the rebuild. He’s good, but not that good.

holy crap that's bad
I’m not convinced Hawes will be any good, outside of being a semi reliable jump-shooting big man.
Unless that draft pick is completely unprotected.
Though I’m interested how much this indicates fans are down on Amare. That’s a worse deal than what the Grizzlies got for Pau.

Maybe
but consider also that Amare has a player option for 09-10 so you are talking from the Kings perspective of giving away your starting PG and a big man w/ upside (and a pick) for an Amare that you might not be able to resign for the long run.
Perhaps if a sign and trade were an option that could change the dynamic.
Also consider that the Suns could unload the long term Dragic contract and finally get a legit backup PG for a potential playoff run this year. And maybe I am over rating him, but I’ve always liked Udrih as a solid (not a star) but a solid PG.

I don't know about "solid"
From what I’ve seen this year now that I live in Sac, I would say I’d want him about as much as I’d want Smush Parker. Heh, nearly every day up here there are calls in to the local sports radio station lamenting the Udrih signing ($$) and his poor play.

Hawes...
Hawes has a ton of interior post moves- his uncle is a former NBA player and his father played hoops at Washington so he has been raised to be an NBA player. I rate Hawes as some were between a better version of Nick Collison and a bigger version of Shareef Abdul Raheem. He has had 4 knee surgeries but he’s only twenty years old and he has a great work ethic.
The pick in this senario would probably be protected or the Rockets pick this year obtained in the Artest deal.
As far as Amare v. Gasol- Pau doesn’t carry the baggage that Amare carries. Between his defensive liabilities, over inflated sense of worth and micro fracture surgery repaired knees Amare is worth considerably less than Gasol. I like Amare, don’t get me wrong but it’s not like your buying a Ferrari off the show room floor here. He’s more like a used Mercedes with a lease that has a slight shimmy when you get up around 75 mph- still a sweet ride but…
Overall, Udrih is better than he is playing right now, Hawes has a lot of potential as a scorer, rebounder and shot blocker and Kenny Thomas is a waste of human space at 8.9 million for next season. If I were a Suns fan I don’t know how I would feel about this trade. Even as a Kings fan I’m not sure that Amare is a guy I want to build around.
Hot dogs, get your hot dogs.
I guess a lot has to do with a projection of Hawes
but wouldn’t Hinrich+Tyrus Thomas be a way way way better deal? Especially for a team that needs defense. I think Thomas would thrive next to shaq while he was able to roam defensively. If you’re not that concerned about getting someone overly young, Joakim Noah would help more than Hawes as well.

Maybe but
I like Hawes far more then Tyrus though and look at the contracts:
Tyrus is 8.4m to 2010/11 w/ a 6.2 qualifying offer in 11/12
Hawes is 4.5m to 09/10 w/ a team option for 2.9m in 10/11 and a qualifying offer for 4.1m in 11/12.
This is a great contract b/c if he doesn’t pan out you can drop him by summer 2010 but if he’s good you can keep him for very little until 2012.
And he’s the better all around player and would fit better w/ Shaq. You need a very heady player to rotate around Shaq and from what I read Tyrus while more athletic doesn’t have that b-ball IQ. Hawes can also start at C and also play with Shaq at PF while Tryus has no chance at playing C.

good point RE: 2010
maybe Noah then? He’d fit better on defense but couldn’t draw out defenders on offense like Hawes can.
I suppose my biggest issue is that Hawes may turn out to be no good at anything, no matter his projected skillset.

True
In my highly refined scouting system, I project Hawes as having higher upside then either Noah or Tyrus and his contract makes it a low risk proposition AND in the immediate he’s the best fit for the Suns b/c he can shoot and board.
We’ve already got two hair guys that are all activity and no jump shot.

I like this trade
We address two of our biggest issues with a back up PG and a backup C (sort of) and we get pieces for the future.
Udrih should be better than his stat line suggests, hes got a nice game and would be a great back up for Nash. I like how Hawes would match up with Shaq with his passing opening up the game for all these cutters we’re supposed to have.
ugh
Amare sure has slipped. That’s all I can say.

very possibly, but can Steve Kerr?

Bosh
Any hope Toronto/ Colangelo takes a chance on Amare – Bosh trade? Bosh is a threat to leave in 2010 so they might bite if they feel they have better chance of resigning Amare, and the Raptors also have losing record.
Plus maybe sweeten the deal with Alando Tucker (potential good swingman) and/ or add Jason Kapono to lessen their contracts for 2010. We can turn around and trade Kapono to another team for another backup big or PG (collison or earl watson maybe) – i dont know enough about trading rules if you can trade an incoming player immediately.
Of course we end up with Bosh who might not resign – but he just might as he becomes the center piece in a Suns team w/out shaq and nash in 2010. I would rather build around Bosh than Amare. Worse case scenario: we also lose Bosh and have tons of cap space for a total rebuilding
After tonight's game...
there is no way I support this idea.
Neither Udrich or Hawes looked very good and if this is all we can get for Amare then
I’m not on board.
The Heinrich/Thomas deal, however, could be promising…
I do not like Amare Stoudemire
I do not think he’s worth the effort of trading Hawes. Therefore, no I wouldn’t do it. (I don’t like Boozer or Marion either.)

What an indictment of Amare
That Suns fans think Spencer Hawes and Beno Udrih is fair value, and a Kings fan thinks it’s not worth it to trade Hawes. Just…..wow.
