Monday morning hangover...

Consider this a Monday morning brain / link dump...

  • I am trying to put my thoughts together about Terry Porter's dismissal. I keep coming back to what I said originally:

Porter has been unable to display the confidence needed to earn the trust of his players and, in retrospect, may have never had the experience and reputation to be successful in this environment.

It would not be fair, however, to put all the team's woes on the head coach's shoulders. Porter has his work cut out for him trying to balance the desires and demands of his two MVPs, along with a large assortment of star players both young and old.

Terry Porter might not be the right guy for this job, but if that's the case, the person responsible for hiring him cannot be ignored.

  • Amare rumors continue to fly ... let's check in with a quick poll on how you are feeling this morning
  • Don't miss Ball Don't Lie / The Basketball Jones on-the-ground coverage of the All-Star festivities. They did a FANTASTIC job of capturing what it was like to be in Phoenix from the fan level.
  • I did get to meet this crew and while Tas and Skeets are ok and all, JD is the real genius and the man behind the camera/recorder/editing software. Don't let anyone tell you Canadians are dumb and should be walled off from coming to America

[Note by Phoenix Stan, 02/16/09 9:49 AM MST ]

  • Best dunks of the weekend were not in the "Big House," but on the little court at the Convention Center. Here's some links to those jams
  • Fanster has a great introduction to the Suns newest coach, Alvin Gentry

[Note by Phoenix Stan, 02/16/09 10:08 AM MST ]

BREAKING NEWS - Jason Richardson - busted again. This time it's even worse:

While Richardson was clocked at more than 50 mph over the posted speed limit at one point, Clark said impairment was not suspected.

Richardson's 3-year-old son was in the back seat of the car. Police said the little boy was not in a child seat...

The Suns player was arrested and booked into Scottsdale City Jail. He was released after a few hours.

[Note by Phoenix Stan, 02/16/09 10:22 AM MST ]

  • Firing your head coach 4 months in and having a player you traded for get busted (again) in only his 3rd month in town has to make for a bad day for Mr. Kerr. It also counts for three Moron Points on the old Steve Kerr Moron Meter.
  • To be fair, having Shaq win the All-Star MVP does have to also count for a Genius Point. Net = 2 Moron Points

[Note by Phoenix Stan, 02/16/09 10:39 AM MST ]

  • Canis Hoopus has some interesting trade discussion and yet another Amare idea ... not as good as this one from Blazer's Edge and not one that is likely to happen, either
  • Brett from Fan House had a much better angle on Devin Harris' "record" 3.9 second baseline-to-baseline dribble. His run starts at about the 2:10 mark of this video. Be sure to check out the rest of Brett's great ASG coverage while you are there.

[Note by Phoenix Stan, 02/16/09 1:35 PM MST ]

  • A few people talked to me about the "issue" of not using my real name on this site. There are those that feel it creates credibility issues and make "Stan" difficult to take seriously. I have no problem "unmasking" Stan but am curious what (if anything) you all think

[Note by Phoenix Stan, 02/16/09 2:50 PM MST ]

[Note by Phoenix Stan, 02/16/09 5:39 PM MST ]

  • I am thinking now that with Porter gone Gentry will push for Amare to stay. If the best deal they could get was from Chicago it seems more likely that Amare will stay...for now.
  • But remember this - there is NO WAY the Suns start next season with Amare, Shaq, Nash, Richardson and Barbosa under contract. The will need to cut several million to get under the cap. Somebody has to get voted off the island. Maybe Richardson in light of today's events will be that man.

The problem with this poll question is...

that the rumored trades aren’t getting anything near max value.

by stampchez on Feb 16, 2009 10:12 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, at best you’re geting 80 cents on the dollar with a trade now. But I’m convinced that if the Suns go back to SSOL that any athletic big man can succeed so I’m not opposed to a Tyrus Thomas plus others trade.

by Fundefined on Feb 16, 2009 11:44 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, option 3: trade him for 90 cents on the dollar instead of the 30 cents we're being offered

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

499 moron points for Kerr

Sorry but Kerr doesn’t get a genius point for Shaq winning All-Star co-MVP in my book. It doesn’t matter how great Shaq individually has played (and he has). What matters is that the Suns are far worse as a team, and in far greater disarray than they ever were when the biggest problem they had was figuring out what to do about the the Marion "cancer". The only way Kerr can earn genius points for Shaq is if he manages to trade him for someone who fits this team as well or better than Marion did—i.e., until he manages to bring in the type of player he should have traded Marion for to begin with. In fact, given that this trade has possibly led indirectly to the loss of Amare (not to mention the D’Antoni debacle), even that is being generous. In the meantime, I’ll be giving Kerr a moron point each day until Shaq retires, or until the aforementioned hypothetical trade is made.

by TexSUN on Feb 16, 2009 11:03 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Looking at this thing...

…from a non Suns fan’s perspective, I’d give Kerr about a thousand Moron Points. As someone who has watched Kevin McHale for over a decade, I know boobery when I see it and you, my friend, have it in spades in the Suns’ front office. Amare is young and productive but he can opt out wherever he goes. If Kerr holds on to him, next year is an even tighter market at the trade deadline, especially if the cap is lowered.

One of the best lessons of the KG trade is that you get the best single player you can and live with the rest of the deal. Is this Ty Thomas? I’m not sure they could do much better at this time. They certainly aren’t going to get the full boat (big expiring deals, draft picks, and a young starter) for Amare.

I feel for you. It’s going to suck for a while. Just hope that they get the best young player available and…well, Nash and Shaq are gone in two years so I’d be hoping for draft picks and cheap stashed Euros more than anything else.

Remember when...

KG wanted to come to the Suns? :(

by whatisboxhappening on Feb 16, 2009 11:47 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

Wasn't it....

…something like Stoudemire to the Hawks and then the 3rd and 11th pick to the Wolves? I seem to remember Boston being involved at one point as well in place of Atlanta.

there also was...

Marion to Boston, Jefferson to Minnesota, and KG to Phoenix, right?

by Funky Flapsack on Feb 16, 2009 12:34 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

yeah

Marion killed it and then demanded a trade

also of note is the fact that Minnesota did not want Stoudemire for KG — they were always looking at Jefferson

Could Sarver be traded for a real owner instead???

fader nation is a conquered nation

Jerry Jones is Al Davis with a smile!

by mdierk on Feb 16, 2009 1:00 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Kerr makes this move

Unless Sarver demands it. But I doubt Kerr wants to be looked at as the guy who completely ruined this team.

Also, let’s keep in mind that before Danny Ainge obtained KG, the people of Bosting thought he was the worst GM ever. Now they praise him.

The recipe for success!

Find a former Suns player who is now a gm that has an extraordinary player he is willing to give to his old team.

My problem with the poll..

I say don’t trade him, not because he’s the future but because we just fired Porter. I would like to see the season out with these players. If we didn’t make the coaching change then I would’ve liked to see what trades we could get.

who cares what your real name is

I don’t. Your writing is good, your coverage is wonderful, and that’s all that matters. It’s the internet, you can be whomever you would like to be…

I wished you could be a brain, and then i would be able to give you to jason richardson.

I am incredibly happy I found this blog. It’s a great place to come and have intelligent conversations about my favorite team.

Your intelligent writing and witty humor is all the credibility I need.

What's wrong w/ Stan?

Steve Nash, the league's MVP, is a longhaired Canadian who spoke out against the war in Iraq and reads The Communist Manifesto. Quentin Richardson declared after a game-winning shot that it "was like Hamlet. It was a suspense thriller, and I killed them at the end." Amare Stoudemire, when asked to comment on a 22-point third quarter against the Kings, said, "I've got a tendency to jump over some guys' heads and throw it down."

As far as trading him this season versus doing it in the off-season, I believe it was Marc Stein from ESPN who brought up an excellent point. If they wait until the off-season, they won’t be able to get back contracts that go off the books next year, so they’ll be stuck paying the luxury tax in 2009-2010. This is, of course, assuming that a Stoudemire trade would mostly be for cash’s sake.

Here’s to hoping the Mavs or Lakers will come to our rescue by taking Shaq off our hands for Kidd or Odom, or that Kerr keeps his finger off the trigger until the trade deadline and the Trailblazers finally go, “Ok ok, you got us … we’ll give you Aldridge, Bayless, and RLEC.”

As for Phoenix Stan

I think, it was a brilliant play on Phoenix Fan, and unmasking yourself now will only ruin it……. :D

Whats up doc?

by RottPhiler on Feb 16, 2009 2:21 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Thanks

it was actually meant to be a brilliant play on Tajikistan….obviously it wasn’t

The idea would be to still use Phx Stan but to also post my real name an kind of bio

As our coverage changes from being on the outside watching and opining to being in the locker room talking to people it’s been suggested that I wouldn’t be taken as seriously. Of course I do use my real name when I am talking to real people. I have never once call myself “Phoenix Stan” in person / on the phone.

by Phoenix Stan on Feb 16, 2009 2:39 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the “rules” for old media are dying. I’m not too worried about you not getting respected when you will be interviewing someone who doesn’t know where the apostrophe in his own name goes.

by ArizonaCactus on Feb 16, 2009 2:44 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

On screen names

I always thought having a cool screen name was part of the “charm” of blogging. Maybe that’s because I’m an old-timer (i.e., "geek") on the internet, and remember the days when it was all text based on Unix systems. Then again, when I was running this site, I had no real ambition (or hope) of taking it beyond the level of a complete outsider broadcasting my opinion of what I could see on the floor during games, and glean from others’ hard work in the media. It’s kind of a tough call, and I’d go with whatever your “heart” tells you to do.

by TexSUN on Feb 16, 2009 2:52 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

...and...

It’s not like writing under a pseudonym is anything new, even in the mainstream media. See Abigail Van Buren, Ann Landers, etc.

by TexSUN on Feb 16, 2009 2:55 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Liar!

You were totally Phoenix Stan on your radio interview with the Steve Mason show (I think) in LA.

But seriously, it doesn’t matter. I switched to my real name for similar reasons on blog posts, but I think Phoenix Stan is a fine nom de plume.

by Mike Lisboa on Feb 16, 2009 4:54 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Keep the mask on

what’s behind the mask is quite frightening

Either that, or think of a clever name incorporating your real name. just sayin’

Mmmmm ... Guinness

by JSun on Feb 16, 2009 2:38 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

I say keep it

What’s wrong with Stan? Whoever told you that is crazy…
What matters is how you run this site, and you do it just perfect. When you are doing interviews you can just say “Hi, my name is _ from BSTS, aka Phx Stan”
lol, I think that’s cooler.

"Basketball doesn't build character. It reveals it"

by PanamaSun on Feb 16, 2009 2:55 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

yeah

i don’t see the problem with using that name, even to get an interview. You’re fmaous in this town

by Funky Flapsack on Feb 16, 2009 3:35 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

The quality of your work

is much more important than the name that it’s posted under. That’s what gets you credibility in this industry. Since you’ve already mentioned that you use your real name in interviews and all that jazz, I really wouldn’t sweat it.

There’s a huge difference between trying to hide who you are and simply using a harmless pseudonym. You’ve put yourself out there through Twitter — hell, your son has a post on the site. I think things are fine the way they are.

I vote for Richardson. I’ve been clamoring for LB start, and let’s get rid of Rich
