What will happen in the summer?
Lets discuss the option of a new head coach to planet orange.
As of June 28, 2008, these guys (from InsideHoops.com) are either jobless or an assistant -- Tom Thibodeau, Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Fratello, Dwane Casey, Terry Stotts, Brian Hill, Paul Silas, Eric Musselman, Bob Hill, Lenny Wilkens, Sam Vincent, Avery Johnson, Flip Saunders.
With many more to loose their jobs by the summer it appears that the Suns have a few really good candidates to choose from.
Who would you like to see on the Suns bench calling the shots?

Depends who's still on the team =)
In Nash we trust - for better and for worse...

I think they will stay with Gentry
If they keep the current core (exception Shaq) in tact. If they get ride of Barbosa / Amare then you can bet Nash will not be back and we can except a new coach and style of basketball.

Thats true.
I’m still on the wall about him… He seems a little unsure of himself. And depending on what happens if this team still consisted of a good portion of this years roster it could spell another porter situation.

Whomever Nash, Amare & Shaq want
With Amare & Shaq’s egos so large I doubt they would play hard for a coach they didn’t at least endorse – if not pick.
And after all Steve’s been through he deserves to play for a coach he endorses too.

Shaq, Nash & Amare won’t all be here next year. I bet Gentry is the Coach again b/c A)He is doing a decent job and B) He is affordable.
I think there will be many changes this summer, #1 being us getting under the cap. I think they make a large effort to move Shaq, and if unsuccessful, resort to moving Amare.
I just hope we are fortunate in the draft this year and actually take a contributor.
Ultimately, I hope we get younger.

I've always been a flip flopper on this but...
Kerr HAS to see what he can do with Amare. I get that the spacing was messed up. I get that he was shooting to many jumpers and Porter was lame(you get the idea). These small sample size games and the run we had without amare before are eerily similar. I hardly think its the ‘championship resolve’ to persist through injury. It seems to me at least no one really misses amare on the floor, in fact some may even enjoy it without him.
Frankly outside of that, I don’t really know what we should do, everything that seemed good at the time the last 5-6 years just comes to fruition as epic FAIL.

you need doug collins
he keeps faking a comeback to coaching, but I think a team like the Suns with Shaq, Nash, and Amare in place would be a good match for his style

If this team is respectable for the rest of the season...
…and seeing as how Amare will be hard pressed to stay after 2010, is it possible that we trade Amare to whoever gets the #1 pick, along with some more players (to SacTown, perhaps) and draft Blake Griffin? He’s been a stud so far in college, and if we’re going to enter rebuilding mode, he would be a great piece to build around. The only problem here is that a relatively small market, currently sucky team, like the Kings or the T-Wolves or the Thunder, might not have a chance to keep Amare either after 2010 and reject an expensive, one-year rental of his services. Any thoughts?

I honestly don’t think anyone will trade the #1 or #2 picks for Amare (if Blake Griffin and Ricky Rubio both enter the draft).

This is a good point though
once the lottery is done and teams know their draft order we can start considering trades.
I disagree that a team wouldn’t trade a top five pick for Amare. It really just depends on the team. If you are OKC and have a ton of picks and a ton of youth already….or Memphis perhaps.
The big issue w/ trading Amare is his contract and can a sign and trade be worked out. If you are OKC you are really only getting Amare for 1 year otherwise. That means he’s got some say in what happens as well.

Yup
Sign and trade would be key. I think the Suns might be willing to move higher up into the draft this year, even if it is a weaker draft. It all depends on how we want to move forward and what we can get.
As this season winds down though I am convinced that we are going to keep LB. With that in mind I think JRich will be gone in the offseason. LB should be a starter anyhow. Think we can get a pick for JRich?

The issue
w/ trading Jason is matching his salary…He’s at like $13m for a few more years so you can just get a pick for him. We would have to take back a contract of about equal value.
It is more complicated then that though. After the season teams will have dumped salary (expiring contracts that expired) and anyone under the salary cap (which is projected to be about $57m).
If you look at this in the 09/10 section there are about 9 teams projected to be under the cap. I think for example OKC being $16m under the cap could trade just picks for JRich while teams over the cap have to match salaries.
Not saying OKC would do that but it gives you an idea how much more complicated it would be to trade him then LB.
Someone check me on this…?

I know
I should have made that more clear but I was refering to making a trade that included a pick.
I realize that with the current economic situation that it will be tough to move him for any kind of good pick, but you got to believe that there will be some solid value for him in the offf season. It all depends on who wants to shell out the dough for him.

Sure
I am sure after the season we will go team by team and see who could use him…I would look for a team with a lot of young players that thinks it’s on the verge of breaking through and wants to ad that vet scoring piece at the position.
Haven’t given it much thought yet but I am all for moving JRich and keeping LB if it is doable.

LB is too small to be a full time shooting guard. I love LB but he will get lit up by any SG that has size. We need to keep JRich if possible.

no
barbosa has hear. and no arrests. and all sorts of intangibles.
i fully understand that he is the more “tradeable” of the two, but Barbosa being traded would follow in the series of bad moves made by this franchise.

it all depends on the coach.
i’d like to think that kerr will not try to impose the coaching style on the players again (see “porter, terry”). but he is in fact a moron. so you have to think he will look at gentry and decide it didn’t work, despite the fact that amare was not around.
kerr is very short sighted. he will get a half court defensive coach. he will retain nash only to convert him into a malcontent. he will trade away barbosa and stoudemire for brian grant’s contract and three second round draft picks. re-sign grant hill to a six year extension. give shaq a 3 year extension. get a dui. and give himself a raise.

Can we take up this discussion after this season?
It’s really kind of depressing to talk about it now, as if this season’s going to the dogs already…
I was never this emotional when I was a Bulls fans during MJ’s time.
