On Shaq's broad shoulders

I'm going to keep this recap short and sweet and go back to celebrating a great victory.  The Suns were supposed to lose this game.  When Kobe started to go off in the 3rd, the Suns were supposed to roll over and accept the fact that they lost to a better team today.  That didn't happen because of four things - these four things just happen to be the same four things I said we would need to win this game today.

1) Slow it down and play through Shaq: Shaq finished the game with 33 points and 7 rebounds.  He was guarded by inferior players all game and the Suns were able to take advantage of this.

2) JRich and Barbosa have to play out of their minds: Okay, so I only got this one half right.  Barbosa (who is playing BEAUTIFUL basketball right now) scored 22 points with 7 assists and only 3 turnovers in the starting PG role.  He also played almost the whole game (more on that later).  JRich struggled but did hit some timely shots but Grant Hill and Matt Barnes more than made up for JRich's struggles.

3) Take care of the ball: The Suns had 15 turnovers but for the most part were able to take care of the ball when they needed to - that was pretty scary at the end though.  They were also able to force the Lakers into 15 turnovers.

4) Goran Dragic has to earn his paycheck: Okay, so he definitely didn't earn his paycheck, but the spirit of this was that he couldn't hurt the Suns with his scared play.  I thought Gentry was very smart limiting Dragic to only 4 minutes.  The Suns didn't have Steve Nash available to dig them out of a hole caused by Dragic and made up for this by not allowing the Slovenian to dig them into a hole in the first place.

All in all, the Suns were able to beat a great Lakers team without two of our best players.  They were also able to withstand Kobe looking like he was going to just take the game over and forced others to make plays.  This is a great win and one that we can definitely build off of.  So all of you Suns fans, enjoy the victory and let's hope that they can continue to play with this same passion throughout this tough section of their schedule.  If they do - we will definitely be rooting for our Suns in the playoffs.

This game was awesome.

Shaq is awesome.

Barnes was awesome today.

Stat = addition by subtraction.

Gentry = everything Porter was expected to be but wasn’t, and better at 7SOL than D’antoni because we now score most of our points inside the paint which is way cooler, and way more consistant.

Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.

On your Gentry equation

I agree with you that this “version” of 7SOL has more an emphasis on points in the paint.
Today, we our guys scored twice as much in the low post as the Lakers, a team that has Gasol and Odom. And it wasn’t just Shaq posting up, it was Barbosa, Hill, and Richardson attacking the boards.
Its a high octane system that is being used to get high percentage shots.

I loved seeing Coach D’Antoin’s brand of basketball, because to me it brought out the best of the game, fluid play, teamwork, and entertainment.
Despite that, one of my beefs with Coach D’Antoni was the over- allowance of perimeter shooting when he had a team fast enough to crash the boards. High percentage shots that are aggressive and get them to the line.
Basketball is beautiful when the Phoenix plays smoothly as this.

Team effort

They survived the 3rd quarter Kobe madness! They closed out the game without Shaq!
Everyone played their heart out. I believe in Matt Barnes again. I believe in LB at the point. I believe Grant Hill is inmortal. I believe Sahq is a freaking beast!!

Awesome Inside-out game.
Hey, Van Gundy: Shut the F*ck up!
Go Suns!

Retraction

I ripped Barnes in my last post. Obviously, I am eating humble pie today. And it’s delicious.

Clearly, Barnes was impressive. I think he made the difference in this game. Shaq, Hill and L.B. did what we needed them too and all around excellent team effort. I’ve gotta give the game ball to Matt, though.

Lakers are officially back down earth. I love it. My Lake Show co-workers will be avoiding me like the plague tomorrow. I can’t wait…. This win is extremely significant. Especially going into this road trip.

PS – Van Gundy ripping the Suns franchise all game long AGAIN. How can we get this F*ckface fired?!?!

when the suns were leading in the third

he said something like: ‘Well, the Lakers don’t really care about this game, as tehy have a great cushion in the West’ basically saying that the Suns beat a team that didn’t give a crap. how unfair can you get? fuck this guy

Once upon a time the Suns got out on the break... and along came Steve sucKerr

Great game

Anytime the Suns beat the Lakers and Phil “The Messiah” Jackson it is a great moment.
I too was a Barnes downer, he played extremely well today, scoring was secondary IMO, his rebounding and going after loose balls was tremendous. His tip on the miss foul shot was great.
LB really played well, he is slowly becoming my favorite Sun. Any trade movement he better not be mentioned.
Shaq is a beast, he really has played well. He really is one of top 20 players of all time.
Hill is a pro, class act.
Dragic needs to grow up and play ball.
An effort like this makes you wonder. Geez I have killed this team for lack of desire and effort, and today they played hard and for the most part smart. When the Lakers had that 19-4 run to start the 3rd, I said" I’ll be damned, here we go again" But the Suns go on a 16-4 run and fight back.
And I agree, Van Gundy needs to shut is mouth, Nash and Hill have more class then he could ever dream of. Hey Van Gundy, the crap is old, Porter didn’t do a good job and he got fired just like you did, get over it.

Interesting enough

The Suns ran the floor really well. I mean Grant Hill scored a lay up in 3 seconds!. Great balance between running and slowing down the game to give Shaq his touches. Hybrid offensive game at its best. Has Gentry finally figured it out? Have the Suns turned the corner?
They showed great composure when Kobe went nuts in the third. To me, that’s the BEST part of this game.

You can tell that I'm excited

"Basketball doesn't build character. It reveals it"

by PanamaSun on Mar 1, 2009 5:48 PM MST up reply actions

or would it be because

Nash isn’t there that the offense flows in certain way (slowing it down through Shaq)?

Similar to how A.I.‘s been missing the games against Orlando and Boston, but they’ve won both games cleanly.

I’m just guessing, is it an identity and chemistry issue? That Shaq and Nash (maybe throw in Amare too) can’t exist with Shaq?

I don’t know. But it’s interesting to find out once Nash is back.

by Azrael on Mar 1, 2009 5:56 PM MST reply actions

correct that

Shaq and Nash (throw in Amare) can’t co-exist with each other.

Dam typos, I should get sleep soon.

by Azrael on Mar 1, 2009 6:03 PM MST up reply actions

Then

Let’s trade Nash as soon as we can or bench him. I don’t get it, remember the +20 assists game that Nash had? most of his assists came from feeding Shaq. Since Gentry took over, I haven’t seen Nash deny the ball to the big fellow. How do you explain that Shaq is still putting up big numbers even when we play “fast”? We are currently 4-4 this season with Nash sitting. It’s an improvement from previous seasons but I’m still a long way from feeling comfortable when he’s sitting out a game.

sensible

In Nash we trust - for better and for worse...

by ZonaFlash on Mar 1, 2009 7:02 PM MST up reply actions

I’m not really sure. Maybe it’s because Amare is sitting. Shaq’s touches weren’t that high in the first two or three games ever since Gentry took over, possibly because we’ve been playing scrubs.

I don’t think it’s about playing fast vs slowing it down. As Shaq and the Suns demonstrated, it’s possible to exist.

I’m thinking more of Nash’s game of dribble-penetrate and PNR that has to co-exist with the low post (together with spreading the floor more, similar to Orlando). Of course, if Shaq in the low post, the possible options for Amare and Nash becomes less because of the space in the paint and space in the perimeter (harder to pass). Or would it be because Amare is out? That the need for PNR Steve-Nash becomes less and more to the low post? That a more consistent offense comes in via the low post and fast break? Instead of mixing up the low post with Amare’s jumpers before?

Again, I’m not really sure but I’m throwing in questions that may help to find out.

by Azrael on Mar 1, 2009 7:23 PM MST up reply actions

err just forgive the typos, exams have been harsh on me.

I’m also thinking of the Detroit issue. They suddenly looked like a team ever since Iverson sat out. I’ve been watching them ever since the Iverson trade and it seems that with Rip in, there’s consistent chemistry, offense, and defense kicking in (possibly because of years of experience together?)

by Azrael on Mar 1, 2009 7:25 PM MST up reply actions

I was feeling PSun was being sensible.

Saying we don’t need nash and that nash-shaq doesn’t work after one game with all the collateral effects was probably not true.

In Nash we trust - for better and for worse...

by ZonaFlash on Mar 1, 2009 8:06 PM MST up reply actions

Yup

It’s true that his points makes a lot of sense.

I’m just throwing in skepticism just to add to the discussion and explore dimensions. lol

Thanks. It’s hard to explain basketball in as much as it’s hard to explain human beings. Positivism can only go so far. XD

by Azrael on Mar 1, 2009 8:37 PM MST up reply actions

Sorry

If I came across as an ass. Didn’t mean to. My point is that the situation with Iverson is tottally different (IMHO) with what happened today. Shaq gets a lot of feeds from Nash. I don’t feel there’s any friction between them. I don’t think its a chemistry issue. I don’t think Nash takes away Shaq touches, its Amar’e. Nash is in a tough spot when both of them are on the floor. Obviously he feel more comfortable giving the ball to Amar’e on a PnR. It’s what they’ve been doing for the past 5 years. I expect Nash looking for Shaq even more after these last couple of games. I’m really not concerned about that.

"Basketball doesn't build character. It reveals it"

by PanamaSun on Mar 1, 2009 9:47 PM MST up reply actions

It's fine dude. We're cool.

Actually your point got me thinking, it may not be Nash and Shaq afterall , but Amare and Shaq. That’s why my post above inserted “throw in Amare”.

Amare, in as much as Shaq, needs space to be effective. If Shaq is on the floor, Amare takes too much jump shots (there are an article before counting types of shots amare takes when Shaq is on the floor). Healthy discussions are good especially if it helps us (fans) understand the Suns better. lol

by Azrael on Mar 2, 2009 4:17 AM MST up reply actions

I think the bad cog in the wheel is fixed, and it was fixed by Stats’ injury. Most of the time when he was on the court it was like having half of a player, and sometimes it was even less than that (though to his credit, in two or three games this year he was one and a half players). We’re a better team without A’m’a’r’e, even if we have nothing in return. His minutes have gone to guys who are way less talented but play so intensly that their hearts make up for the difference in skills. If Stat had that heart he’d always be mentioned with Kobe and Lebron, but he doesn’t, and I have no reason to believe he’ll develop it.

Take care of the little things, and the big things will take care of themselves.

by SunDolphin on Mar 2, 2009 10:26 AM MST up reply actions

things i noticed and questions since

Was distracted by a girl and conversation majority of the game. A few things I noticed were active hands on the rebounds, shaq getting great position, kobe reaching in like a thousand times.

Im curious after looking at the boxscore and being dsitracted, if we basically stayed home with everyone else under the auspices that Bryant and Gasol couldn’t beat us? Odom was a nonfactor today, everyone on that team was except for the studs.

When Steve comes back, should J-rich come off the bench and barney start? If Hill has to start because of warmth issues and plays horribly in a PF role (so does Barney) shouldn’t we start Barnes at the 4 and bring J-rich off the bench. Or does LB get relegated back (weird to see that happen given his recent play)?

I really like the previous comment about scoring more in the paint. It is nerve racking when winning or losing games depends on whether or not Raja hits five 3’s.

We need something other than Amundson in the post and Dragic behind Nash, and replacing a Dleaguer with another Dleaguer is not sufficient. I wish I had suggestions, but since we are no longer atop the standings it would be hard to lure someone on board.

"Hes very cerebral when he plays out there"--Hubie

by Snowbird on Mar 1, 2009 5:58 PM MST reply actions

I like JRich, but I still think it was terrible mistake to bring him to the Suns… We needed a backup PG and not a SG. LB is a decent SG and would be a starter in many other teams. Thanks to Porter and Kerr, we now have far too many SG’s and still no backup PG.

Going back to who I would start… I’d start LB as SG because he and Nash have already developed some chemistry playing together with the up tempo game. JRich tends to create his own shots, so he would be better in the second unit and would make up for Dragic’s still “nervous” ball handling.

Going to watch this game on Tivo now

and live blog the rewatch!…just kidding.

I am going to watch though and more likely then not will have something profoundly interesting to say later. Something like “Kobe is very good”. Sasha makes me angry. Robin Lopez should get more blocks but that is hard to do from the bench.

It was a fun game to be at. The Suite was nice and all. Even though it was owned by a bank it was filled w/ normal people and good free food and beer. Can’t complain about that!

Did feel detached from the crowd though and the place was certainly electric even if 1/3 were wearing Yellow and were ugly

Suns fans in Phoenix

I live in the southeast but have always been a huge shaq fan. I have followed him everywhere and now have devoted myself to the Suns. Here are some of the things i have been wondering over the past year though. 1.) Why do most Suns fans love Diaw he seemed soft and played horrible in big games. 2.) Does it feel like to yall that LB has more of a connection with Shaq than Nash. 3.) Where were all the Suns fans today, I saw way to many Faker fans.

by shaqisabeast on Mar 1, 2009 7:14 PM MST reply actions

HI

First off not too many Suns fans love Diaw. Most of us felt like he was tissue soft and were frustrated by his imability to play alongside STAT.

As for the faker fans, yea it’s sad but there are just too many LA people who live hear.

Thank you. I guess I got that idea from the announcers because they were always saying he was a fan favorite but the announcing today was horribe.

by shaqisabeast on Mar 1, 2009 7:29 PM MST up reply actions

Welcome btw

to BSoS….

I don’t think anyone would call Diaw a fan favorite. Bell yes. Diaw no. He was a favorite of mine although a frustrating one. Boris has a ton of game. There’s really very few players like him. I think his performance now that he’s starting in Charlotte and what he did starting here in Phx for that year proves that he’s a legit player. He just didn’t do as well coming off the bench. He’s not a roll player. He’s a starter.

As for LB w/ Shaq…well I think so. For whatever reason as has been mention in these comments, the Nash / Shaq combo hasn’t worked well and that’s in part to Nash wanting to run the ball and not stand around making entry passes and waiting.

The best they’ve looked is when Nash pushes the break and probes and then if nothing is there hits Shaq as the trailer coming down the lane (quite the scary site) and then if that’s not there the 3rd option is working the ball around and feeding shaq in the post.

We saw that against the Bobcats before Nash rolled his ankle. I hope we see that approach again when Steve comes back. The balance between the two is key to the Suns success since neither of them can really carry the team alone for an extended period of time.

by Seth Pollack on Mar 1, 2009 7:44 PM MST up reply actions

Its so strange that all that frustration moved straight from Diaw to Amare

I really think if we could trade a healthy amare straight up for Diaw, I would want that.

Here’s my favorite pic of Diaw!

Well, maybe...

They weren’t saying “boo” every time he passed up an open layup for a kickout. They were saying “Boooooooris.”

…Nope, I can’t justify that one.

by Azreous on Mar 2, 2009 12:06 AM MST up reply actions

In backwards order…

3. Laker fans are rich, they can travel.

2. LB is young and not set in his ways, as he has no ego, and realizes Shaq is the MAN and will make him better.

1. Diaw is a punk. He only plays well when he starts, and now that Stat is out, I miss him. But Richardson isn’t a bad tradeoff, though knowing what we know now, it probably wasn’t a great idea (we had to get rid of Bell though, and if we had to ship Diaw to do it, then oh well).

With all due respect, getting on Matador Nash for his limited offense seems almost insane.

Agreed

I was surrounded by Laker fans. They were chanting “single digits” when our lead went below 10. Loved throwing “double digits” right back at them when we pushed the lead above 10 again. One Laker lady flipped a finger as she left with a couple minutes to go when the teenager next to me called out “bye Laker fan, have a nice trip home”. Then we all yelled “stay classy, L.A.”!

C'mon guys...

…it was a great game and all, but I get the sense that all of a sudden some fans think we don’t need Nash. Please. If I had to trade one of our Big Three, it would be Amare. The game shouldn’t have taken that long to end. Does no one remember that if Ariza had knocked down that three in the final minute, it would have been a one posession game? That wouldn’t have even come close to happening had we had Nash in there icing the game with his free throws. Hopefully, Nash can come back as soon as possible, but I am ecstatic nonetheless that we played so well w/o him and Amare. Definitely the best win of the season…

What I’m saying is that Shaq is a better player than Nash, even at this point in his career, and the only thing that makes me think we shouldn’t trade Nash and build around Shaq is that Shaq is no longer young, even if he plays younger than his age.

The bench!

The bench is finally not afraid to play – no Stevie, no Raja, no Boris, (no Stat) – no pressure to be perfect.
Just good – good enough (exept Barbosa and Amudson(still striving for perfection))
Grant Hill is just a Darling all the way
Otherwise – perfect bench, provided Shaq is not jumping the stands.
And now we know what Lopes is good for – 1 block or 2 points, can’t have both.
If you think Nashy is getting old for Suns, We’ll take him!

Great win...

I havent been up to date with Suns news for several days due to a trip and when i finally got around to check this site i found this recap! Suns win over the Lakers finally! – With our lousy record against the Wests playoff teams i had to double check the title (Shaq!) if this was someone reminiscing about past Suns-Lakers playoff wars. I hope they show a replay on local TV. Is Barbosa finally getting the handle of running the team as a point G??

Damn why cant the Jazz and Mavs lose!!! I would still rather Suns get in as a 7th or 8th seed instead of hoping for a miracle in the draft lottery.

Me too about sliding in as a 7th or 8th seed. You never know what can happen once you’re there, and besides I don’t want Phx to be one of those teams that ends up above .500 and out of the playoffs when there are sub .500 teams in the East that do. That would kill me!

Good Win

Hi Suns Fans, im glad to discover this blog in SB Nation. Im a Phoenix fan here in Manila, Philippines…how I wish I could watch Shaq, Steve and the rest of the Suns in a live game there one day.

Anyway, Im not sure if i missed anything above but I believe nobody commented that the Lakers were playing their 4th game in six nights and just came from Denver. Kobe and Phil suggested fatigue as their excuse, but I think this is still a quality win regardless of the schedule. I hope the team can build on this, especially with the 4-game road trip looming ahead against playoff teams capped by the game vs the Spurs.

Hope we can get Steve back and start rolling with an overdue 10-game winning streak! Goodluck SUNS!

Yep, it’s a quality win regardless. For every excuse the Lakers could fall back on (an admittedly tough stretch of schedule and no Bynum), there’s still that small problem where we didn’t have Nash or Amare. And they didn’t look too tired running us out of the building Thursday.
