Draftees in the NCAA tournament

At the risk of being accused of giving up the season, I thought it prudent to start a thread on the players that might be available to us with our pick, which will either be #14 or #16.  Since the end of the regular season is a month away, and the tournament is upon us, we should at least know what we are talking about when we discuss the options.  Courtesy of the stumbling economy, I find myself out of a job, which will enable me to see most of the games.

Star-divide

As I said, the pick will be #14 if we miss the playoffs, (I am assuming we do not slip below Milwaukee) or #16 if we make the playoffs (the East #8 team has a stranglehold on the #15 pick).  I am not going to rehash scouting reports.  I am asking you guys to watch the games and post observations.

First, what do we need?  The list is long.  There is the longstanding need for a backup point guard.  Of course if management still thinks Dragic is the answer, we should not consider point guards.

There are several possible solutions:

Eric Maynor, VCU 6-3, 180 - Thursday, 9:50 ET vs UCLA

Stephen Curry, Davidson 6-1, 180 Will play on Thursday in NIT vs St. Mary's

Jeff Teague, Wake Forest 6-2, 175 Friday, 9:40 PM ET vs Cleveland State

Ty Lawson, UNC 6-0, 195 - will miss opener vs Radford, 2:50 PM ET, Thursday

Of the four, I am going to watch Maynor and Teague very closely.  These two are supposed to be smart.  Also, it caught my eye that NBADRAFT.NET compared Teague to Kevin Johnson.

Looking at our roster, I'd say we need a small forward.  Grant Hill won't last much longer, and Barnes is really a frontcourt sixth man.  I would like Tucker to be the one, but he hasn't shown it consistently.  Here are some possibilities to watch:

James Johnson, Wake Forest 6-8, 235 Friday, 9:40 PM ET vs Cleveland State

Sam Young, Pittsburgh 6-6, 220 Friday, 2:55 vs E Tennessee State

Of course, we could always draft a center, but this might be interpreted as an admission that the Lopez pick was a mistake.  Still, I think it advisable to watch one guy:

BJ Mullens Ohio State 7-0, 275 Friday, 9:40 PM ET vs Siena

With all the Amare trade talk, we might watch the power forward candidates.

DeJuan Blair Pittsburgh 6-6, 287 Friday, 2:55 PM ET vs E Tennessee State

Patrick Patterson Kentucky 6-8, 235, In action Thursday in the NIT, check listings

Craig Brackins Iowa State 6-10, 230 Not in a tournament

Also, two other guys to keep an eye on.  These are shooting guards.  Maybe we can trade Jrich.

Demar Derozen 6-6, 210 USC Friday 7:20 PM ET  vs Boston College

James Harden 6-5, 220 ASU Friday, 2:45 PM ET vs Temple

I put Harden in there because I think he will end up being the best player in the draft, and I would trade Amare to the Clips if I knew we could get him.

Wow!

This is GREAT STUFF! THANKS!

I don’t get to watch much (or any) college ball so this is a huge help!

As I recall btw last summer you said Kevin Love would be great and a lot of us didn’t buy it. You were right and earned your scouting cred with me

Not sure who you mean

They have a shooting guard named Tyreke Evans who is projected to be a late round pick. Their starting point guard is Antonio Anderson, a senior who will probably go undrafted. Evans may be a diamond in the rough, he is only a freshman, but I think he should stay in another year. He doesn’t hold a candle to DeRozan, who is the same type of player, but much more explosive.

Tyreke Evans

I am still not clear on Evan’s role with the Tigers. Anderson was clearly the point guard, handling the ball most of the time and dishing out 9 assists vs Cal St-Northridge. Since Antonio Anderson is a senior, I would expect Evans to take over at point guard next year if he stays in school. I really believe he should stay. He scored 15 against the Matadors, hardly world shaking for someone with pro aspirations against a 15 seed bent on upset. All in all, not impressed with Evans.

no way we get harden.

though, his mom did buy a house here in phoenix just last year. now, why would she go and do such a thing when she had to have known that her son would be going into the NBA just short of a year later?

i’m thinking they know something we don’t, and the draft is really set in stone from the beginning of the previous school year.

now, if any of that second paragraph is true, i’ll cry tears of joy. i want nothing more than to see james harden don a suns jersey.

we still need a PG - especially handy for trades too

Euro ball players are boom or bust type of gambles.

I think we have gambled more than enuff. Thanks you.

Like our chances of winning via 7SOL with the team we love.

No more wing players. They are a dime a dozen in this league.

draftees

Tyreke Evans was initially a shooting guard for the TIGERS but John Calipari switched him to point guard and since they have won 25 games straight. Granted they are in Conference USA but he is still a good player who will go in the lottery.

There are also some other pgs to look at as well.

Willie Warren- Oklahoma
Johnny Flynn- Syracuse
Darren Collison- UCLA

Also he seemed to have been slipping on many draft boards but Brandon Jennings will probably be available as well.
He isnt doing such a great job in Italy but let me assure you that if he played in college this year he would be having his way with kids his own age.

No day but today

Evans, et al

Warren is not a true point, more of a combo guard. I am avoiding them since we have Leandro. Collison is slipping to the end of the 1st round. Brandon Jennings is going to be gone, that’s why I didn’t include him.

Tyreke Evans is slated to be end of first round by many boards, and up high on some. I will watch him, but the scouting report is that he should stay in school.

There's no telling

where the Suns will end up drafting. If blow up is in the cards then you could easily see the Suns trading a major player like a JRich to a team under the cap and get back a higher pick…this will all heat up once the lottery is done on May 19th and we know exactly which teams which what needs are drafting where

by Phoenix Stan on Mar 19, 2009 12:34 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

PStan

barring a trade, there is no way the Suns are drafting anything other than #14 or #16. Of course if they finish with %14 there is a very small chance they will move up to #1, 2 or 3. Slots 4-13, 15, and 17-31 are impossible.

I’d like to think there is someone out there who will take Richardson. I wouldn’t take him. Harden is better. DeRozan may be better.

Only w/ a trade

of course….the thing about young players is they always seem so good but they take years to develop. Not sure if those guys will end up better then JRich but right now w/ he’s experience there’s no doubt he’s more valuable to a team trying to win.

Perhaps team that is already young and wants to add a vet piece

Harden

Reminds me of Harold Minor without the hops. You love the guy, I don’t know, I know I haven’t seen him play as much as you have, but what I have seen he is OK, I like Henderson better than Harden.

maybe...

if we can only peg camby to a one year deal. though, harden played less than stellar throughout the whole NCAA tournament…he might fall a little further than the 3-7 slot i had him pegged in. who knows, though. maybe that whole “potential” and “upside” thing will come into play.

also, here’s a fun game: during the draft, have you and your friends pick a word, and see which one gets used most. whichever word gets said most wins. good words to start with: potential, upside, downside.

As I reported, Lawson is not playing. I am going to watch Hansbrough, though. I find it intriguing that he does so well against college competition, yet so many are relegating him to late round status. I saw someone compare him to Eduardo Najera. Ouch.

Thursday game observations

Tyreke Evans was pushed from the headlines by his teammate Roburt Sallie. Evans, did NOT play point guard (contrary to what is being said), kind of sat around while his team struggled. He needs to stay another year so he can take over the point after Anderson graduates.

I saw much of the Oklahoma game watching SG Willie Warren, and Warren has good size, a 3 point stroke, and can get to the basket. He is not a point guard, either. He defers to the Griffin boys, but was more aggressive offensively when Blake was out. Bla ke Griffin might be the best big man to come out of college since Tim Dincan. He passes, he brings the ball up, he’s athletic, and he is under control. whoever gets him will have pretty close to a sure thing. To recap, I will get another chance to see Warren in the next round.

Ty Lawson did not play for the Tar Heels, but I will get a chance to see him in the next round as UNC obliterated their opponent. Hansbrough looked good, and even made a few snappy passes. I guess we won’t know for sure whether he can play in thge NBA until he hits the summer league. However, I want to see what he can do against Blake Griffin. That would be a Final four meeting.

The game of the night for me was the VCU-UCLA game. I was extremely impressed with Eric Maynor. He got Collison and Holliday in foul trouble. Collison had the last laugh as he defended Maynor well on the last shot. I don’t blame Maynor for that, but his teammates should have been more involved in the final play. Eric Maynor is a Kevin Johnson type of guard – good shot, nice court vision, quick as all get out (he smoked the speedy Collison time after time), and I think he will make a good pro. Also, speaking of Darren Collison, he was beat most of the night, but made the play of the game when it counted. We will see him in the second round. In addition, VCU has a center that bears watching, Larry Sanders. He is 6’10 with a 7-7 wingspan. He is a sophmore shot blocking terror.

Best big man since Duncan?

Let’s see, how about Greg Oden coming out of school, before injuries?
Chris Bosh?
Emeka Okafor was pretty dominant in college, especially on D
Carlos Boozer/Elton Brand, who I think is where Blake Griffin compares mostly too. He may be a lil more athletic than them, but he’s about the same size as them. He also compares to Kenyon Martin in terms of his athletic ability and size.

Comparisons aside, I think the Suns should go for Eric Maynor as the future PG in case Dragic doesn’t pan out, or to just stockpile PG’s to trade later on.

Friday early games

I saw ASU’s game. Harden should have stayed in his hotel room. Pendergraph was fun to watch. He might slip into the end of the first round. In the Pitt-ETSU game, Blair was a beast. He had 27 pints and 17 rebounds. His game looks a lot like Barkley’s game. We would be kicking ourselves if we passed on him and he turns out. I wonder how he would do vs Blake Griffin?

Tonight we have Wake with Teague and Johnson, Louisville with Earl Clark, USC with DeRozan, Arizona with Budinger and Jordan, and of course Ohio State with BJ Mullens to watch.

by Hawk42 on Mar 20, 2009 4:19 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Friday evening

Many of the guys I have been watching didn’t distinguish themselves very well in the first round. DeRozan of USC is kind of the 4th man in the USC offense. I don’t know why he is thinking of turning pro. Earl Clark from Louisville is not aq power forward, more of a Scottie Pippen type. Budinger of UA is a decent player, but I don’t know if he gets any better. His pro career may turn out to be like Mike Dunleavys career.

I was impressed with Jordan Hill, but I don’t think we will get a chance to get him. Wake Forest is falling flat, and Jeff Teague is having a nightmare game with 5 turnovers. He was one of the point guards I was tracking. James Johnson, the WF small forward, looks good, but not enough to lead his team to a first round victory over a3 seed. Also, I didn’t see too much of BJ Mullens of Ohio State. He only played 13 minutes.

My conclusions so far?

1. The PAC 10 is VERY tough this year
2. A lot of these underclassmen, one and done types that went to college because of the age rule in the NBA are not ready for the draft.

Dunleavy

actually had a solid year last year, this year his knee has been banged up. Earl Clark is interesting, but I agree is a small forward, who doesn’t get the ball off the glass enough.

So far

Two of my main guys are out now. I recommend the Suns take a long look at drafting Eric Maynor of VCU or James Johnson of Wake. Guys who fell off my radar: BJ Mullens of Ohio State and Jeff Teague of Wake Forest.

Second round games I am watching:

UCLA-Villanova 1:05 ET – watching Darren Collison
Maryland-Memphis 3:20 ET – I’ll give Tyreke Evans another chance
LSU-UC – 5:45 ET – maybe Lawson will play
Michigan-Oklahoma – 5"50 ET – Willie Warren has caught my eye
Texas-Duke – 8:15 ET – I’ll watch Gerald Henderson and Damien James, who is a small forward candidate

By the way, Patrick Patterson, Kentucky power forward, and Stephen Curry, Davidson PG/SG, are playing in the NIT Monday.

Collison

I am about ready to cross him off my list. He is a decent defender for his size, but got beat several times off the dribble by Maynor of VCU. That said, he made the play when it counted. He is no more than Dragic. Goran would be a star in college ball.

Tyreke Evans

One nnote about this guy – He did take over as point guard 10 games into the season, but Antonio Anderson has been playing a lot of point to help the learning process for the freshman. The CS Northridge game was not really a good barometer for him. He had a cold start, and the benchwarmer Sallie took all of the headlines.

He is great with the three, and goes hard to the basket. I have not seen much of him passing, but he would be a solid choice as a 6-6 point guard.

I saw teague play a while ago. I think if he was still on the board when we got to pick, we should take him. Maynor’s pretty good, too. We should definitely take a point guard, Steve won’t play forever, and I don’t see Dragic being a good enough starter.

But yeah, of all the draftees, I’d like to see Jeff Teague go to Phoenix, even if we’d have to trade up to get him.

Hawk I am pretty much with you. I think that both Maynor and James Johnson are pretty much ready to contribute in the NBA. Both are very polished and you know what you are getting. If Barnes and Hill are gone then Johnson would be able to help filling that void. However, for some reason I am partial to Eric Maynor, the floaters in the lane won me over and I think he can be an excellent player in the NBA.

Referring to some of your other guys, I think Tyreke has the potential to be a solid player in the Rodney Stuckey mold which could be a nice addition.

Earl Clark is my first choice but I think he is off the board unless we trade up, he has a very solid skill set and huge upside.

Realistically, Maynor and/or Johnson would be beneficial to the Suns and I don’t see those two guys taking years to develop.

DeJuan Blair

You can’t help but appreciate this guy as well, I wouldn’t complain if he ended up a Sun. I know he’s a little undersized but his wingspan is ridiculous and he is such a solid rebounder with sick post moves and decent shooting touch.

with amaré even unsure as to what his vision will be after he heals up completely, and the fact that stromile swift was really only a rental for the end of the season, i think we could use the size. and, pendergraph has shown a lot of promise this season as a possible quality bench player in the NBA. so long as he learns how to stay out of foul trouble.

Consensus of pick

I trolled around to over 50 draft sites, and, while I saw 20 different names for the Suns pick (#14), the three leaders in the clubhouse are:

Maynor 6 votes
Clark 4 votes
Lawson 4 votes

I would be happy with any of these three. I used the #14 pick because there is a 75% chance that is what it will be, 23% for the 16th pick, and 2% that it will be in the top 3.

evans was the shooting guard then they moved him over to pg where he has played very well amidst rose’s shadow.

Brandon Jennings looks awesome, some have him projected as high as 7, some have him projected towards the end of the lottery. He would be a ridiculous steal anywhere from 13-15. His game would be very good to mesh with Amare’s post Nash.

Earl Clark is another player that would fit. We’ll be looking for a small forward assuming we won’t sign both Barnes and Hill if either.

Stephen Curry has no place in Phx. He’s a poor man’s Barbosa.

Dujuan Blair has no place in Phx. a 6’7" PF that loves to bang? In Phx? right.

I can’t believe Sam Young and A.J. Price aren’t getting much love in mock drafts. Sam Young’s downside is he’s old, he’s like 23 already, but his stock is bound to rise throughout March, I don’t know if that puts him at 13-15.

Who to watch. Stanley Robinson. UCONN. He’s as athletic as anyone, and has come on since Uconn lost Dyson.

NIT Report

Stephon Curry completed his season in a loss to Saint Mary’s, where he was out-dueled by Patty Mills, the Australian point guard some have sneaking into the first round. Curry averaged 29 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in his run.

The Kentucky Wildcats are still in the hunt, thanks to the heroics of probable second rounder Jodie Meeks, a 6-4 shooting guard. Meeks is a nice college player, but is not expected to be drafted. However, Patrick Patterson while averaging 14 and 8, is holding his place near the middle of the first round.

Cole Aldrich

I did not include him in my write ups, but it appears he might declare. His stock has skyrocketed. He is a 6’11" 245 pound guy who is very athletic and blocks shots. His 13 point, 20 rebound 10 block effort in the second round has opened a lot of eyes. He is now projected in the middle of the first round.

What do you guys think?

yep

I would take this guy if we had the opportunity, he would fit well if we were holding onto Amare as he can step out and hit an 18 footer. He will also mask Amare’s defensive deficiencies. He would be a solid pick and could turn into a beast.

i think i like it.

if he’s aroudn, and there’s no other huge steal out there, i think he’d be worth a shot. though, i would like to draft a wingman…a big man with good potential is always an enigma.

Aldrich over Lopez

If we took Aldrich it would be a clear admission that Lopez was a bust

Also

Everyone, take a close look at Jonny Flynn of Syracuse. I have heard some people that have broadcast bball for a long time say he is the best ot the point guards (Maynor, Teague, Lawson, Collison)

Maynor

I am taking this opportunity to stop stalking, so here goes. I have been to almost every game that Eric Maynor has played in since he was a sophomore. Although he does not have some of the raw athletic skills that other point guards like Jonny Flynn have (and I have a friend who is from Syracuse who makes me watch every game), I have never seen any team shut him down. He has been the focal point of the oppositions defense for the last two years since he nailed a jump shot to defeat Duke as a sophomore. Although the outcome against UCLA was not the same, he was clearly the best player on the court.

One thing that I do not like about Maynor’s game is his jump shot; it is really awkward with his off hand on top of the ball as he shoots although his percentage has definitely increased. Although he can lull defenders asleep and blow past them, he does not have the speed that other top level point guards have. He does have a great crossover. If the Suns go PG, Maynor would be a good choice.

Memphis drubbed, Evans the good, the bad, and the ugly

I watched Tyreke Evans exclusively against Missouri. Even when he didn’t have the ball. Here’s what I came up with.

He has a little D-Wade in him, definitely. The guy is fearless in going to the basket. With his size, opposing guards will have trouble with him. Right now, he is a bit predictable. Often when the ball is in his hands, his teammates might as well go sit down, because it’s not coming back. I saw one or two nice passes, but only on plays where someone was in the clear going to the basket. He doesn’t set people up. He has no jump shot that I saw. When he gets to the NBA, people will cut off his drive, and make him pass. He simply does not see the floor like a point guard should.

Someone said Memphis put him at point guard and then won 26 straight, like that proved he was a better point than Antonio Anderson. But the Conference USA is a level below the Big East or Big 12, and the move worked more because it made Evans get invoilved instead of waiting around for someone to pass him the ball. He does not move at all without the ball.

In the first half the offense bogged down when he wouldn’t even look at anything or anyone besides the basket from the time he brought it across the timeline. He will get a lot of offensive fouls in the NBA, much like Amare does now that his game is so predictable. I also saw quite a few lazy, looping passes, some that were stolen by Misssouri.

He has a terrific handle, and a great feel for scoring. I believe hje would do well as an off guard with a decent point bringing it up, much like Kobe does with the Lakers. He is amazing on a couple alley-oops – on the receiving end. He usually lays it up instead of dunking, which would be sent back in his face by NBA frontcourtmen.

His defense is non-existent. I saw the Matador defense once or twice, and once he just watched a Missouri guy walktz to the hoop without moving. He tried scoring one on four a couple of times. One time he left the floor to make a pass and came back down because he didn’t have anyone to pass it to.

In summary, Evans is an immense talent that will require patient coaching. It remains to be seen how coachable he is. He will be a good NBA player. My assessment?

Best case: Dwyane Wade
Worst case: Jason Richardson

He will be drafted before we pick. I wouldn’t be surprised if D’Antoni took him. But I don’t think he is a point guard.

Worst Case JRich is a very bold statement, clearly you have some confidence in the guy. When all is said and done, I think we will be picking more than once in the 1st round so don’t rule anyone out. For the good or bad I think the forecast for the offseason is trades.

ANother vote for Maynor here. Make a smart decision Suns.

Maynor is my vote right now, but

There is something special about Evans. I sincerely wish he would stay in school for another year. My guess is his agent is filling him full of all kinds of stuff about how Memphis will not be as good without the current seniors Anderson and Dozier. But he clearly needs another year, if only to develop consistency and a jump shot.

Earl Clark and T-Will

Both of those guys will make a difference for someone next year, and it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if its the Suns.

Clark did good

Against the overmatched ‘Cats. I would have liked to see him clamp dopwn on Budinger, but hey, it was a blowout. He is one of fivethat I have focused on, along with Maynor, Willie Warren, Sam Young, and Lawson. We need a point guard and a SF, and I wouls be thrilled if Kerr could get an extra pick and get Maynor and Clark or Young. Here’s a novel idea. Send Amare to the Knicks for Lee, Robionson, and the #10. Pick Maynor and Clark. Trade JRich for a pick in next year’s draft and a center that could alternate with Lopez.. Our lineup in three years could be

PG Maynor
SG LB
SF Clark
PFLee
C Lopez

Lawson best #14 possibility in Final 4

nice game, very few turnovers, 21-3 A/TO ratio, some timely threes.

Warren

Did not step up until it was too late

E. Clark

did his job, but Terrence Williams choked on his press clippings.

MSU-UConn playing now

AJ Price is the only possibility, but I like Jeff Adrien. He is a tough player, but not rated in the first round. He looks agressive, but his free throw shooting is horrible. Price was covered well by Walton of MSU. Now watching Lawson and the Tar Heels.
