Looking at the schedule

and doing the simplest possible analysis and assuming that the team with the better record would take the game for the rest of the way, Dalas would end up with 47 wins, and Suns 44 wins.

(And yes, under that assumption, the Suns lose to the Mavs on Apr 5th)

So we our “Good break index” is currently 3. If the Suns beat a good team or the Mavs lose to a bad team, the # goes down by 1. Conversely, if the Mavs beat a good team or we lose to a bad team, then the # goes up.

To make the playoffs, we need that # to be negative by the end of the season (zero is ok too if we hold the tiebreaker).

And this is another way to show how important the Apr 5th game is. If we take it, we get two break points, which means we can get to 0 with just another little break (and hopefully no anti-breaks) here and there.

I guess I’ll keep that “Good break index” in my mind when I follow the games from now on…

Waking up at 6AM and spending the whole day reading research papers on lift-and-project operators and tree-width of graphs can do that.

Basically, what I meant is we need to catch at least 3 more good breaks than bad breaks to make the playoffs.

Good break = we beat a team with a better record than us, or the mavs lose to a team that has worse record than themselves.

Bad break = we lose to a bad team or Mavs beat a good team

And if we beat the Mavs on Apr 5, that counts as 2 good breaks.
