What if the Suns win the lottery?

Now, I hope the Suns can make the playoffs, mainly because I believe they have the potential beat the Lakers in the West and go on a serious run. But if they miss out, which seems highly likely now, and they go into the lottery and miraculously win it, which is less likely than me winning a $100 million in the lottery, who would you pick? In my opinion, there are 3 options here: Blake Griffin, Hasheem Thabeet, Ricky Rubio, or sell the pick. Sorry I forgot about the popular 4th option.

Blake Griffin, is arguably the best power forward to come out of college in years, and could certainly give us insurance in case Amare's eye never heals, or if Amare leaves town as a free agent. According to nbadraft.net,he compares similarly to Charles Barkley and Boozer.

Hasheem Thabeet, is the best shot blocker to come out of college in years, and could give us a defensive anchor that we havent had since maybe, ever. He may be the second coming of Dikembe Mutombo, and though he may be offensively limited, but he could certainly help lead our fast break, and be the long term replacement to Shaq.

Ricky Rubio, is probably the best international player right now. He is the top point guard prospect, and gives the Suns, potentially its next great point guard for the next several years. Granted you have Goran Dragic, as possibly an emerging player, but he's still young and uncertain. Nevertheless, what's wrong stock piling point guards, remember our 97-98 Suns team : http://www.hoopsstats.com/basketball/fantasy/nba/phoenix-suns/team/roster/98/21/1. According to nbadraft.net, he compares similarly to Steve Nash and Walt Frazier!

Or we sell/trade the pick to an up and coming team, and watch the guy blossom elsewhere. I think that elite fraternity of Luol Deng, Rajon Rondo, Nate Robinson, Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Rodriguez, etc. wouldn't mind welcoming another guy to their group.

First I would faint,

think that the Spurs won the lottery again, Suns would want to draft Blake Griffin and he would refuse to play for the Suns, Then the Suns would draft Thabeet and he turns into Sam Bowie, Just an optomistic approach.

Seriously, I would be shocked, then I would draft Blake Griffin, no questions asked.

Jordan Hill

This guy could be the second coming of Amare, with I dare say more positive incentives, imagine the athleticism of the front court and the running potential. However, I wouldn’t take him first pick, but I would trade say our pick and tucker (and gasp cash?) in order to move up and get him.
First pick I would take Griffin and rejoice with joy.

Thabeet

Why no thabeet votes, hes a great defenisive guy and I haven’t given up on dragic myself so rubio is not needed, and shaq is getting old.

Griffin is my vote

but I’d take a real long look at Rubio. I’m not even sure he is going to be in the draft. Thabeet is going to be a mistake. The comparison to Sam Bowie is close to accurate. He achieves the level of Mutombo only in a Best Case scenario.

I think trading up to get Jordan Hill is the best choice. But, if they miraculously get the first pick, I guess I’d pick Blake Griffin. The dude is unstoppable. He duplicates Amare’s talents (except he doesn’t yet have the same outside game that Amare does), but he puts forth a lot more effort. Pick Griffin, then trade Stoudemire for a good point guard.

Also … Kerr might actually try to go for Hill, since he’s a fellow Wildcat.

Or trade the pick

to the Spurs for a fake tatoo and a bag of habanero chiles, since he is a Spurs double agent.

Thabeet is going to be a bust. I wouldn’t waste a lottery pick on a guy who only blocks shots. Blocked shots are overrated statistics anyway. They rarely end up with a change in possession. It’s better than a made shot, but a blocked shot generally ends up with the same team in possession, either via a retrieved block, or the ball out of bounds, with less time on the clock.

Thabeet equals

Roy Hibbert, no thanks

Come on now!

Thabeet is not a stiff like Shawn Bradley or Roy Hibbert, he can actually move. With that said, you can’t overrate a shot blocker’s ability, because if we had one, Tony Parker, Kobe, and the rest of the league would think twice about attacking the hole. Instead the lane has been as open as Paris Hilton’s vagina for the Suns opponents. If we had a shot blocker, you would see more guys pulling up or kicking out. You don’t see too many guys attacking the rim on the Spurs with Duncan anchoring the middle or when Shaq was in his prime, you didnt too much of that either.

Thabeet doesn't stay on the floor as much as Duncan

NBA players will keep him in foul trouble. Now if David Stern changes the foul allowance to8 or 9, Thabeet would be nice. You never use a #1 for a non-offensive player, AF.

Rubio would be a good pick.

Let’s be honest; not most of us are sold on Dragic. If Phoenix drafted a big with the first pick, say goodbye to Robin Lopez. Given, he wouldn’t be a superstar anyways, but you have to give him the opportunity to develop. If Dragic turns out to be a stud, then you can trade off Rubio. Blake Griffin would be great talent, but two dominant bigs can’t win a game if there is no ball handler to feed them the ball.

Rubio would be a strong point guard, and it would allow Barbosa to develop his 2 game. Pair that with Stoudemire, and you’ve got the next Big 3.

Oh, it would be a great problem to have...

I would say that once the lottery balls have been plucked on May 19th there will be a lot of discussion of trading one of our big name vets to move up to a top 3 or 5 spot.

Without knowing the draft order we can’t say but once we do….let the speculation begin!

Ricky Rubio was great in the olympics against the best point guards in the world. Blake griffin dominated the big 12 which was horrible. now oklahoma was terrible ecept for him , and the guy still put up SICK numbers so it’s tough to say

If Amare is not part of the future, draft griffin. If Amare is part of the future take Rubio.

Win win situation

Thabeet will be terrible. play 18 minutes a game and foul out most nights. Jordan Hill won’t be nearly as good as Amare.

hello everyone… nice forum you have here, pity I didn’t find it earlier…

would just like to add, though it seems ridiculous to think about top pick, that rubio would be the best choice… I am from europe and have been watching him ever since he showed up… he is such an intelligent player, already very good on the defensive end (needs to get stronger still), great hands and basketball intelligence… he can organize on the offensive end but still is poor shooter… I haven’t seen much of improvement in his shooting lately to be honest, but in the junior days he was on triple double almost every night… however, he is such a big potential which could make big difference for anyone who will draft him….

thanks steve for everything but you have to go… shaq too, if there would be anyone stupid enough to make that deal with… if they keep this team intact it would be just continuing the agony…

Blake Griffin by default.

People, Dragic will never amound to anything. Low bball IQ. He will have more fouls and turnovers than assists, I guarentee it.

If they wanted Rubio they should have kept Rudy Fernandez.

If they give up on Nash or want a future point then go after Jose Calderon, that is unless New Orleans goes into sell mode again and Chris Paul wants out.

by Lefty3 on Mar 30, 2009 7:58 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

please no calderon.. .he is worse, yes, worse defensive player than nash.. try to pay more tention and you will easily see it… yet not that good on offense as nash, even now…

Don't get your hopes up

Don’t get your hopes up, fellow suns fans, the suns have .5% of a chance to win the lottery.

Possible but highly unlikely. We had a better chance to win the coin flip for Kareem and lost it.

Ed Davis

I am surprised ESPN has Ed Davis in the lottery. He is pretty raw, and from what I saw not ready for the next step. Also, I would certainly pick Earl Clark ahead of James Johnson. He is a silky smooth small forward (think Jamaal Wilkes), and can pass and rebound. Having said that, I wouldn’t be disappoinmted with Johnson.
