Detailed look at Suns salary/luxury cap woes
This is a fantastic piece from NBA Round Table blog detailing the Suns upcoming salary situation. They break down all the contracts signed and explore some options the team is facing.
This is mandatory reading for anyone that wants to fully understand the Suns situation going into the off-season

Thanks for posting this
Tough decisions ahead. I didn’t like what I just read. =(

Looks like...
Nash is going to be gone. That’s definitely the easiest option according to that break down.
This is going to be a tough, tough summer of decisions. Much appreciated post.
Letting Nash leave would be the easiest way to save salary/tax...
but he is by far the Suns most popular player and there would certainly be a fan backlash if he was let go. It would be hard to estimate how his departure would affect ticket sales and sponsorships.
no way does nash go....
this only tells me that jrich/stat and barbosa will be the chips we use to trade away. Do you guys think that they will actually CUT Nash…..not a chance. Thanks for the read on this one its def put everything in persepctive.
I just hope we keep barbosa
i was thinking about buying an LB jersey but after reading this im gonna wait till fall :/

As a fan...
…I really hope they don’t trade Nash away. I guess it’s selfishness, or perhaps stupidity, to hope the team holds on to a 35 yr. old pg who doesn’t play much defense. But he is and has been my favorite Sun, and like stampchez mentions, I’m sure there’d still be a big fan backlash, especially in terms of ticket sales.
I think the trading Amare option is the best one, at this point. Not trying to throw him under the bus, but the rest of the guys have really come together as a team, and I worry that Amare’s return might change that. Plus, we all know that Amare won’t be as effective w/o a guy like Nash to get him the ball. Additionally, it never hurts to have a mentor like Nash for our pg of the future, Dragic. And lastly, if we’re building for the future, how could we think of trading a guy like Barbosa, or our rookie and thrid-year role players, who have really found their niche on this team?
Seems Like the best move
Is to trade Stoudemire or JRich to a team under the cap for cheaper contracts and/or pick(s).

If we made the playoffs
Sarver would have some more cash. Missing the playoffs would be a huge blow. It is hard to justify paying a significant luxury tax with a lottery team. I don’t envy Sarver. It seems like we would not be in this shape if we had not traded Shawn. Also, thew signing of Diaw has turned out to be the wrong move.

I go back to the Banks signing
aside from draft pick selling, the decision to give Banks that contract set the team back the most because it cascaded into not finding a backup PG for so long and in fact played into passing on guys like Rondo or Sergio.

You're right
The Banks signing was kind of knee-jerk, like the way we got Googs. Remember, we only got him to wipe the egg off of our faces at losing McDyess. Knee jerk trades never work. I think the miss on Salmons caused the signing of Banks. Remember, he said God didn’t want him in Phoenix.
