Another Missed call?

Did anybody see the missed call on the last shot of regulation before the over time in the Lakers / Magic tragidy?? I was under the impression that what Pau Gasol did was considered a goal tend? Am I wrong? His fingers cleary pass through the under side of the rim. They clearly touch the rim.

The way I read the rules it's a goal tend? I 'll keep an eye out for video or a picture. But my DVR says goal tend.

If this is a goal tend...

Again we have changed the outcome of a series. Basically robbing me of desire to watch the rest of the series with the Lakers up 2.

Hmmmmph

As much as I hate the Lakers, he missed a relatively easy layup. Doesn’t matter whether or not Pau did anything, he could have made that shot easily, didn’t, and now they are down two games. Be more upset at the idiotic turnovers that came in overtime that could have been avoided by basic ball handling and extending your arms above your head to keep the ball away from prying hands (Howard).

Well

now the league is saying that b/c Pau didn’t shake the rim it wasn’t a goal tend.

I don’t know if that’s how the rule reads though.

What matters

According to the in-game commentary, what seems to matter is not whether he shook the rim, or whether the fingers pass through the underside of the rim, but whether he affected the outcome of the shot. If this is the standard (and it does make sense) then as much as I dislike the Lakers, and as much as I happen to like the Magic (and living 50 miles from Orlando I admit to having become somewhat infected with that bug), I think the right call was made. Courtney Lee’s shot was clearly too strong and wouldn’t have gone in anyhow.

Generally

I’d agree with that, though it’s hard for me to fathom a situation when a player’s shot hits the rim and another play shook the rim and the refs decided that did not affect the shot. In this case though, Pau didn’t shake the rim it appears so sure.

if that's the rule

then it was called correctly.

Pau didn’t move the rim. Honestly, even if he had, I don’t think the shot had a chance.

Pau did not move the rim, so no goaltend.

However, Dwight Howard REACHED THROUGH the rim to block a Gasol dunk and there was no call. Lakers should have gotten 2 there.

There's a big difference

Between some play in the first half and a game winning shot at the end of regulation.

missed call

the commentator said , if gasol had made the rim vibrate or the ball go off course then it would have been a goal tending, but since it was just bad shot and did not change the course of the shot it was fair, that was the actual definitation of a goal tend……but they did miss a dwight howard goal tend when his hand went all the way through the rim and net and blocked the ball in the beginning of the game

Section I-A Player Shall Not:
a. Touch the ball or the basket ring when the ball is using the basket ring as its lower base.
EXCEPTION: If a player near his own basket has his hand legally in contact with the ball, it is not a violation if his contact with the ball continues after the ball enters the cylinder, or if, in such action, he touches the basket.
b. Touch the ball when it is above the basket ring and within the imaginary cylinder.
c. For goaltending to occur, the ball, in the judgment of the official, must have a chance to score.
d. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched any part of the backboard above ring level, whether the ball is considered on its upward or downward flight.
e. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched the backboard below the ring level and while the ball is on its upward flight.
f. Trap the ball against the face of the backboard. (To be a trapped ball, three elements must exist simultaneously. The hand, the ball and the backboard must all occur at the same time. A batted ball against the backboard is not a trapped ball.)
g. Touch any live ball from within the playing area that is on its downward flight with an opportunity to touch the basket ring. This is considered to be a “field goal attempt” or trying for a goal.
h. Touch the ball at any time with a hand which is through the basket ring.
i. Vibrate the rim or backboard so as to cause the ball to make an unnatural bounce.
PENALTY: If the violation is at the opponent’s basket, the offended team is awarded two points, if the attempt is from the two point zone and three points if it is from the three point zone. The crediting of the score and subsequent procedure is the same as if the awarded score has resulted from the ball having gone through the basket, except that the official shall hand the ball to a player of the team entitled to the throw-in. If the violation is at a team’s own basket, no points can be scored and the ball is awarded to the offended team at the free throw line extended on either sideline. If there is a violation by both teams, play shall be resumed by a jump ball between any two opponents at the center circle.

How do we know that it didnt affect the backboard and that the shot didnt have a chance before he touched the rim? Did he touch the rim before the ball touched the backboard?

Both calls the Howard call and the Gasol call should have been made.

Just trying to make discussion :) I could care less either way.

So Phil Jackson ...

Just admitted it was basket interference today, and that Orlando should have gotten the basket. However, Phil is the master of effin’-wit-tha-head, and I’m sure he’s floating it out there just to make Orlando even more downtrodden/frustrated by thinking “man, we were SO close.”
