Dampier - Jrich Trade Good for us?

Dampier - Jrich Trade Good for us?

Star-divide

Hoopsworld mentions that the Mavericks have basically traded away their two guards in their bid to get Shawn Marion.   As part of the trade the mavs send Devean George and Antoine Wright, two primary rotation players at the two.   They signed Greg Buckner, a great defender, but a non-factor on the offensive end.  They also got back Nathan Jawai from the Raptors, a center prospect.   The Mavericks are likely to land Marcin Gortat  as a restricted free agent Topping off their centers are Ryan Hollins and good old Erick Dampier.  (or Erica Dampier as Shaq fondly refers to him).

Erick Dampier's incentive based contract will end this season if he doesn't average 28 minutes per game (he averaged 23 last season). That's a $12 million ending deal.

Phoenix could gain a center to play ahead of Robin Lopez and dump JRich's contract and driving abilities.

It's speculation at this point but it might work....

Erick Dampier on a running team? I don’t know. I don’t think he’s been able to do anything more than a jog since 1997.

If we are looking at rebuilding than it probably will help us there

since Dampier’s contract ends after this season. It’ll also free up some cap space for the 2010 free agency. So in the long run this helps us more than it helps Dallas but in the short run it hurts us more.

Let's face it

No one is going to want to play for us if we don’t have a clear identity and a competitive team. Capspace means squat when no one wants to play for you. Exhibit A: Memphis.

At this point

why not. Move everybody except Clark, Lou, Barbosa and Dragic. Start at the beginning.

ya just dump everything...

and let the Jokelahoma Blunder win the lottery next year with our #1 pick. It’s obvious that they have to be most ecstatic fans of our demise, since the more Kerr and Sarver keep botching this, the better their draft status looks next year.

No chance whatsoever...

Dallas intends to use his fully non-guaranteed contract to be players in next year’s free agency. Smart money says they’re planning to make a run at Joe Johnson (sorry if that comes off as a cheap jab after picking up Marion, but it’s true).

Dallas will have money next year?

I don’t think Damp will get their ludicrously high payroll under control with his "measly"12 million dollar salary coming off the books.

They just signed Marion and Kidd to huge contracts right? Aren’t they spending 90 million a year in salary already.

Must be nice to be Mark Cuban!

by eagleheart on Jul 10, 2009 12:02 PM MDT reply actions

No, they won't have money under the cap...

But Damp’s deal is worth about $16.5M, and can be voided at will going into next season. Since Mark Cuban wouldn’t blink for a second at taking on loads more luxury tax money, that allows Dallas to make a team that is going to lose their star free agent a sign-and-trade offer that:

a) Gives them something in return for a player that they were going to lose for nothing.
b) Allows that team to take on $0 dollars in salary cap space in return, so that they can remain player in the 2010 FA market, plus whatever Dallas throws into the bargain.
c) Let’s the player in question take more money than anyone else can offer them, to come to a fully stocked team with Dirk, Kidd, Marion, etc.

You’re right, it must be nice to be Mark Cuban.

Just looking

This trade obviously isn’t a great one from a basketball point of view. If you’re expecting Dampier to contribute something very meaningful then you’ll be disappointed.

If you’re looking to get rid of a player that doesn’t really fit the team, is a bit of a black hole and while having all the physical tools (though a bit short for a two these days) seems to possess a low basketball IQ (see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uC6qYglQWgI ).

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cuban would have to throw in the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, three oil fields and Jason Terry for me to want Dampier

Damp's beaten the Spurs twice in the playoffs...

How ’bout Nash?

(Sorry, cheap shot. But it was too easy.)

whoa whoa whoa

Dampier had nothing to do with that… i think you mean Dirk beat the spurs twice. also, nash is a mvp.

by notoriouserd on Jul 10, 2009 2:02 PM MDT reply actions

Dallas never beat the Spurs with Nash, and neither did Phoenix...

Maybe that’s a coincidence, maybe it’s not, but it’s true either way. I loved Nash when he was here, and still love him, but the best seasons in Mavs history came after he left, not to mention the three highest scoring seasons of Dirk’s career.

It’s not to say that Damp is better than Nash, he’s clearly not, but those things have to be taken into consideration before people start running their mouths about him “costing” Dallas Steve Nash. There are a lot of things that Damp is bad at, but he wasn’t brought in to do those things. He was brought in to guard Tim Duncan and Shaq in the playoffs, and he did that as well as anybody. Now he might give Dallas a chance to add another marquee player in 2010. To be perfectly honest, if Cuban had it to do all over again, I doubt he’d change a thing.

I do it an bury him on the bench the Mavs would be better but think if we can use that as a way to get Joe Johnson after next season..
Nash Johnson Hill Stat Chandler(hopefully)
Dragic Frye Clark Lopez Barbosa off the bench oh and amundson
we’d be a very good team

by Lebrontophx2010 on Jul 10, 2009 2:03 PM MDT reply actions

We aren't

going to be able to bring Joe Johnson back here and keep everyone else. It’s just not going to happen. If we got Chandler and had Nash, Hill, Amare, and Richardson, that’s not a bad starting 5. By the way, you missed Dudley as a bench performer. I thought Dudley did a pretty good job for us late last year.
